Yeah One Dance easily.

Other top 10 hits that sprang to mind:

Lady Gaga - Do What U Want

I heard at that time that a music video was actually shot but they cancelled the release because of the scandal around R Kelly.

Just checked on Youtube and there is one video with Xtina. Never knew that one :o

Feel like you're downplaying the success of "One Dance" just because it doesn't pass a 'vibe' check. Maybe there's a certain omnipresence that Ed Sheeran exhibits because he's followed by a more tradi

Think.tbey just used the voice performance as the video

It's a shame we've moved into an era where even the bigger artists seem to be foregoing music videos. Visualizers aren't the same.

Ah I thought it was cancelled because the video was deemed overtly grotesque.

I think it would be madness to abandon music videos. They don't need to be expensive, honestly sometimes a simple, effective idea can be enough for a memorable/iconic video that can sell a song (Single Ladies being an obvious example).

Oh ok that can be true as well… now I would like to see that video. I’m wondering why it never leaked tbh. :teresa:

TikTok is a very different platform to YouTube so I don't see this happening.

There was a time that people said YouTube is very different platform than iTunes too but eventually it became almost difficult to ignore

I’m not saying that TikTok should be included yet but if the charts are designed to reflect the popular songs of the moment, regardless of how they are consumed or how much money was used to consume it, then I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think that there could a time and place when TikTok is incorporated some how

What happened to the idea of a TikTok music streaming service?

With regards to music videos, if they are becoming too expensive to make traditionally, I’d much rather have a live performance style video than just a lyric video. Something like When We Were Young by Adele for example

I take your point - I should have clarified that I meant in its current form!

It's worth noting YouTube videos are only counted to the chart from official accounts, it doesn't count user uploaded videos or any edits, mashups, shorts, etc that feature the song, which is where the difference lies right now. If TikTok were to launch a streaming service, or become a platform where lyric videos in their entirety were uploaded, then I think it'd be a conversation worth having. If TikTok in its current form is counted then Instagram stories probably would have to be too, and that's why I think it's very unlikely as things stand.

I have thought about how TikTok could directly contribute to the charts- would be up for it if musicians/labels actually made money directly from their use in TikToks. It would be similar to airplay though as labels get big accounts to promote the music they want, chart manipulation would be rife. In an ideal world where everything was 100% organic it would be great to see how use on TikTok would directly affect the chart, more novelty stuff getting in possibly!

Wasn’t there a time while it was #1 when One Dance wasn’t available on YouTube at all, not even in audio or lyric form? I remember loads of videos pretending they were the “official video” but they’d turn out to be someone’s cover version instead, leading to some amusing furious comments from people asking where the hell they find the actual song. It’s infamously the song that had one of the longest #1 runs ever but had next to no mainstream recognition from anyone outside of Drake fans or a chart audience, even I struggle to remember how it went now.

While I’ve never been a fan of Shape of You either, you can’t deny that had way more recognition and seemed a much more deserved chart run, that did eventually get a video but a good few weeks after it was released as initially it was just a lyric one.

Both felt like a bit of a turning point at the time and it’s just got worse since, I discovered so many songs on music channels from the late 90s until well into the early 2010s to the point where many of the videos are connected in my head with the songs, so it’s odd that they’re not around anymore.

The thing that's arguably good about the influence of TikTok is that people hear a song on it and actively seek it out to play in full on streaming and add to their own playlists- so it feels like a more genuine play than just listening to Hot Hits or whatever and that feels more relevant for the charts.

Counting a clip of a song on a TikTok trend that thousands of people do and upload regardless of whether they have heard,(or even like) the whole song or not would make the chart feel very watered down.

Tbf he had released COTH at the same time and released the video for that was probably hoping to make them both number 1 but he'd already messed up dropping SOY simultaneously 😅

He should of released COTH a week or 2 earlier 🫣

He cost himself 3 more #1s (COTH, Galway Girl & Paean) with just how dominant Shape Of You was!

True but I'd say COTH is the worst of these by releasing on the same actual day, plus didn't it go om to be one of the biggest number 2s ever

Feel like you're downplaying the success of "One Dance" just because it doesn't pass a 'vibe' check. Maybe there's a certain omnipresence that Ed Sheeran exhibits because he's followed by a more traditional channel of listeners, but the numbers speak for themselves. Both are similarly successful songs, and while I'll concede "Shape Of You" is probably the bigger hit overall, it's not a world of difference. Drake getting more weeks at #1 is just a quirk of the charts (like "Taste" spending longer at #1 than "Espresso"), either by accident or design, his song better utilised its time in the spotlight, which is an increasingly brief blip on their overall time around. These songs have existed for another ~400 weeks since leaving the top spot and they're still being listened to by millions every day.

Could be possible that there are testimonials from people who can attest they flocked to Spotify solely because "One Dance"'s unavailability was the final straw, but that would be a marginal bonus at best, and would also force any deniers to accept a credible cultural pull from this otherwise non-descript hit.

Fair enough, admittedly I was falling out of music anyway at the time so maybe it would have better resonated with me at a different point in my life! I just never really heard it that publicly as opposed to similar double figure #1s like Shape of You and Umbrella, which seemed much more inescapable. But I appreciate to be #1 for that long it did have a lot of fans.
