I think artistically, Midnights can be seen as an underperformance. I don't revisit it at all and it's among her bottom 3 as far as her album ranking goes. It's definitely not her "magnum opus" and the expectations are not super high for the new one. But it might ve just me, so..

Probably just you , it's currently her second most successful album of her career in the uk, so people are definitely revisiting it,

it's not in my to 3 personally but the public says otherwise

I don't understand why nobody is talking about the lack of support the new Taylor Swift single will have from TikTok.

This doesn't make sense. You can't use the words "artistically" and "underperformance" in the same breath because they're two completely different things. Underperformance relates to how successful something hasn or hasn't been and regardless of what you think of the album it has been super successful so you can't call it an underperformance. Artistically speaking, the fact that you don't revisit it doesn't mean it's not her magnus opus, that's just your subjective opinion which you're entitled to. I wouldn't personally rank it in my top three Taylor albums either (probably just outside after 1989, Reputation and Lover) but that doesn't mean I don't have high expectations for the upcoming album. So yes I think it's just you!

I was trying to write a response to this earlier, but gave up because it was frying my brain. But you've put it so perfectly, thank you!

They're just saying Midnights is not her best album, which is true

Has a couple of great tracks but overall is a poor effort and I'm a big Swiftie

That's just two opinions though. I'm not sure all (or even most) Swifties would put Midnights in their bottom three?

You'd have to be ultra harsh or a plain hater to call it a bad album

It’s called an opinion lol

Yes. That’s fine and just an opinion. But the issue is calling it an “under performance” when it’s actually been a huge success? An opinion on the quality of an album, doesn’t mean it was or wasn’t a success and/or an “under performance”.
I don’t know why everyone’s being so pedantic when the person’s clearly just trying to say the album’s underwhelming and quite a creative comedown from Folklore and Evermore
Hozier hits 727k today a new high. Slow it down up across the board again too

Thank you! The grounds she won with Folklore were mostly lost with Midnights IN MY BOOKS. Anti-Hero has been her biggest streaming hit though, so commercially it did well because of that alone (especially in the US where one track can make the difference on album charts).

But nobody was talking about the quality of the era/album. It's literally about how successful it was, so when someone says it was an "under performance" in whatever context, makes no sense whatsoever and that's all Mango pointed out (because it didn't make sense).

How you feel about the album is obviously fine. You were clearly disappointed with it, but it still cannot be seen as an under performance in any which way (and doesn't make sense when talking about in in the context of the quality of the era).

My other issue with the post was the assertion that expectations are not high for the upcoming album, I don't think this is the case at all, it's a hugely anticipated album!
