May 15, 20242 yr So happy Espresso has a big chance to remain number 1 this Friday. I wasn't expecting to see Nemo that high but I'm not complaining. I really want to see Baby Lasagna top 40 but I wouldn't bet my money on it. Eurovision songs definitely flopped in the UK charts this year.
May 15, 20242 yr not really a flop for eurovision I’d say, more like going back to business as usual last year was a huge anomaly of success primarily because of the UK having hosted the contest
May 15, 20242 yr Great to see Baby Lasagna at least making a midweek appearance but I won't hold my breath for him to stay there on Friday. At least Nemo definitely will be there (and maybe still a chance of Joost climbing in). Also hooray for Tommy Richman looking like he should get top 3, I was hoping for that this week but wasn't sure if he'd be able to get ahead of Hozier so thought the Post Malone song might be a spanner preventing that. There's something slightly amusing about 'As It Was' getting a spurious reset now of all times as it means it'll be charting higher than 'Dizzy', 2 years after denying 'SPACE MAN' #1  (not quite 3 years in a row of it being higher than our Eurovision entry though as it was only #12 the week Mae Muller hit #9, close though).
May 15, 20242 yr Brer you have forgotten that the OCC retrospectively gave Space Man the #1 position in one of their list articles so it was a #1. Thanks. ;) Edited May 15, 20242 yr by My... WAP??
May 15, 20242 yr Who's seriously suggesting streams shouldn't count in 2024? If anything physicals are what shouldn't count as a lot of people just buy them to inflate the artists chart position, most people streaming just want to hear the tracks. Anyway, looks like a tight race that could go either way for No 1 this week - makes a change from the usual where it's nailed on by now. Here. How can you seriously suggest physicals don't count when you think free streams should count? At least physicals and downloads people actually pay for them and support the artists unlike those that stream. Edited May 15, 20242 yr by kimberley88
May 15, 20242 yr Here. How can you seriously suggest physicals don't count when you think free streams should count? At least physicals and downloads people actually pay for them and support the artists unlike those that stream. They're buying the physical album to manipulate the chart in many instances - see BTS. The easiest way to crack down on that is to stop counting physicals. vinyl and cds and especially cassettes are just not the way music is consumed these days. They're an anachronism and should be treated as such.
May 15, 20242 yr In general I quite like artists who care about the charts being able to use physicals to their advantage. I do disagree with the rule that CD sales only count on despatch being exploited, so the fans might purchase 10k over a period of a few weeks and they’re all dumped on the chart in the week when there’s a close #1 battle. Those sales don’t belong to that week in my view. So what do people buy a CD and can wait weeks to actually get it? (as the despatch date can match when record company see maximum chart impact) And are the fanshappy with that? Or have I misunderstood?
May 15, 20242 yr So what do people buy a CD and can wait weeks to actually get it? (as the despatch date can match when record company see maximum chart impact) And are the fanshappy with that? Or have I misunderstood? I believe so. I guess the fans must go along with it - it doesn’t stop them listening to the song after all and it’s probably just a collectible in many cases.
May 15, 20242 yr Here. How can you seriously suggest physicals don't count when you think free streams should count? At least physicals and downloads people actually pay for them and support the artists unlike those that stream. I've never really understood the plutocratic perspective for the charts, unless it's just a front for an opinion to improve the charts that just means 'make it so more stuff I like charts better' that misses the point of the charts' purpose to report and time capsule what is popular. I don't have a problem with sales being included in general. I do think many years of chart results being skewed by the knowing fact that it buffs the margins so much more easily (it is way easier for me to pay $2 for something than to stream it 100 times), it's the sort of thing you'd think needs to be at least nerfed a little but I guess the chart companies love a headline and attention. Feel like I've been quoting this one video for years now but I've actually seen a label head say that even they feel like they're cheating when the push a pre-order on multiple formats solely to get a top 10 debut that crashes to dust in week 2. Like they know that they're not anywhere near as popular as their chart position peers, but the system allows them to do it. If I do have a problem with anything, it's that I'm really not a fan of the normalised trend of multiple versions or really anything that's put out there to be owned & traded rather than actually played. Not out of elitism (people can do what they want with their property) but because it's the sort of thing that preys on neurodivergent people, or anyone with obsessive-compulsive disorder. As someone who falls under that spectrum myself (mostly manifested in the way I play some video games, but it's okay)*, I see these really expensive physical products shipped out and think that there are gonna be a lot of people who feel the intrinsic need to own all of them, and not all of those people are going to be so wealthy that it's excusable. It's preying on vulnerable people in the same way pokies do, and I don't think enough people are talking about it. To be relevant to the charts, I do think Taylor Swift is a pretty bad example to use for this sort of argument though. In the long run, no one is selling as much physical product as she is at least in recent years. But then some weeks back I saw people calling the Australian vinyl charts rigged because there's no way that she was selling as well as she is. A lot of people just can't cope with the fact that she's magnitudes more popular than their favourite artist right now. *Actually also I do buy all the music I listen to. I think it's kind of a rip off but then my 3rd favourite song of 2022 disappeared completely off the internet for no clear reason and I guess I'm glad I'm one of the few people who can still hear it.
May 15, 20242 yr Baby Lasagne is just one guy and is not non-binary. However, being non-binary wouldn't change a sentence structure in that way anyway. So it would still be "Nemo is Top 40" and not "Nemo are Top 40". slightly related, just occurred to me as a potential niche chart factoid if that top 20 stays the way it is by Friday I think that'd make it the first with two titles led by (openly) non-binary artists in it

May 15, 20242 yr Apologies for the ignorance - who else is other than Nemo? I believe The Blessed Madonna identifies as non-binary (although she doesn't use gender-neutral pronouns)

Same as streaming people hammer it to manipulate the chart to get it to number 1, wheres when I buy my music (which isn't often as i am picky with my music),I support the artist by helping to pay for their fees and wages and to encourage the artist to bring out more music, to me streaming is like going to the cinema without paying for a ticket. May 15, 20242 yr Is there any part of music consumption that we aren't going to write off as 'manipulating the chart' x
May 15, 20242 yr Same as streaming people hammer it to manipulate the chart to get it to number 1 If it's that easy, I'm gonna start getting all my favourite songs to #1!

May 15, 20242 yr What was this out of interest? x "illusions" by Shanae (formerly has also released music as MADAM3EMPRESS). She seems to just reset her socials constantly but isn't well-known enough to generate any real uproar about deleting the song. There's still a live version on YouTube but the studio recording is just R&B perfection for me.
May 15, 20242 yr If it's that easy, I'm gonna start getting all my favourite songs to #1! Whatever floats your boat.
May 15, 20242 yr Harry styles as it was new summer anthem took off glass animals heat waves say now be chart by next mouth lol
