Abba are quite simply the best pop group of all time (even if not my personal favourite). They have it all, the songs, the vocals, the music writing talent, they appeal to such a wide range, the musical, the films, they are basically untouchable at this point.

Given what's left I suspect the top three is in the reverse order to what should be.

You can't fault Abba.

Even the stuff I don't like is clearly brilliant

Abba have a couple of good songs , totally not my bag and cant stand the films.
Yeah a classic group for creating a music revolution of course but not a fan of them. Probably only like a few songs of theirs at a push but even those I wouldn't seek out and also then you hear them anyway lol. The one linked in the video specifically is one of those I do like.

ABBA are wonderful. So many classics, they laid the foundations for a lot of Scandinavian pop music, were hugely influential on other modern pop, have quite an eclectic back catalogue with very few duff singles (some album tracks are questionable).

Benny is one of the best composers the world has ever seen (if he was alive hundreds of years ago he’d have surely been a classical legend), Björn is a brilliant lyricist and just ‘gets’ the music business better than almost anyone, Agnetha and Frida are charismatic front women who complement and riff off one another perfectly. And all this from an act that came to fame through Melodifestivalen first and then Eurovision, putting Sweden on the musical map and establishing the country as one that would forever more punch above its weight. Incredible and my favourite musical act established before my birth by a long way.

So after 4 months we're ending the rate tomorrow in what amounts to a battle of the girl groups- So just who will win?.....................

The iconic ABBA, I think if I was around in the 70s/80s I’d have loved them

Even more than I already do, silly deserving of bronze

My top 2 are the top 2 but hoping Girls Aloud knock spice girls off the number 1 spot

And that's me out then! I grew up with Gold and they have remained some of the most timeless pop songs ever made. I don't associate with anything relating to Mamma Mia though *shudders*

Both groups left do have a handful of songs I enjoy, not really bothered in what order they finish in though as they're about on the same level for me.

I didn’t vote for either, but I’d like Spice Girls to beat Girls Aloud, purely for the massive cultural impact they had.

I'm not into ABBA at all so glad they're out of contention, though obviously I respect their legacy.

Girls Aloud to win please!

The best pop group of all time by a mile (counting the Fab Four as rock ‘n’ roll). There’s no way anyone else in the Top 5 here would have produced pop that sounded the way it did without them.

Agnetha and Frida are the most wonderfully complementary vocal duo - the layered effects they created with the voices transformed music forever. But great music isn’t just about the tunes: it’s what it makes you feel, and the depth of emotion they conveyed as they went through all the stages of their two relationships in front of our eyes was second to none.

Some of the early stuff is very twee but everything from the “Arrival” onwards is brilliant, including most of the album tracks. The “Voulez-Vous” album is pop perfection from beginning to end without a single sub-excellent track. “The Visitors” is also a glorious album that was hugely underrated at the time as they were going out of fashion. And then to come back as they did with “Voyage” which is a very different record but packed full of beautiful gems.

“The Name Of The Game” is my hot take favourite that never gets enough love: it’s such a complex song structure but I find it mesmerising. “Angeleyes” is my other unusual choice of favourite and I think “The Winner Takes It All” completes my top 3 but that’s really just scratching the surface. For anyone who only knows “Gold” I hugely recommend “More ABBA Gold” which has some of the best album tracks.

ABBA are fantastic and would’ve been worthy winners.

Of the two remaining I’m not really bothered with who wins.

Abba are the biggest pop group in history - cultural impact and brilliant songs.

Not bothered about the top 2 at all, Spice Girls had cultural impact but their songs did nothing for me apart from 1-2 of them and Girls Aloud are just the girl pop group that did well in that 00s period nothing more. Like LM in the 10s. Only song I like from them is ‘The Promise’!

I don't think I can say anything about Abba that hasn't already been said above. They completely deserve their place in the top 3.

I don't mind which way round the top two are but I'm backing the Spicies for the win!

I think this vastly undersells Girls Aloud and just how interesting their songs are - structure out of the window, unlike anything else at the time, right from their debut single they made their mark! Obviously not saying you have to like the music yourself, but I think they are a lot more than just the girl group of the moment 20 years back and the reunion tour being such an overwhelming success speaks volumes to this.

I am with Joseph in that Girls Aloud are far more than just any 00s pop band. If you look at the staggering number of groups who came and went during that time and how they managed to create their own sound they really were something else. They produced singles of really surprising quality again and again, and with a gritty mature sound that helped define a whole era of pop. For that reason although I voted for neither they are my preferred winner.

Yeah, completely agree with all of this, I think Steve was a little quick to dismiss them with that sweeping statement
