Thanks for hosting/ the countdown - was good!

Finally from me a plug for my current Erasure rate if you want to vote and like a bit of 80s/90s pop!

Erasure Rate

Thanks very much Gezza!

ABBA the only act with more than 30 voters then. :cheeseblock:

I’ve discusssed GA already - they did produce genuinely great pop music thanks to Xenomania and if it had to be a millennial friendly pop group winning I can’t complain that it’s them. My favourites are “Call The Shots”, “The Show” and “Biology”.

My favourites from the Spice Girls are probably “Viva Forever”, “2 Become 1” and “Stop”. Their cultural legacy is huge, but while the singles were consistently good and did what they needed to do the discography is less strong in my view.

Thanks Gezza for all your efforts hosting such an epic rate. While I don't agree with some (a lot!) of my fellow voters, it's been great fun

Infinite love for Girls Aloud  There'll never be another one of them in the pop world, I miss their presence so immensely! (although great to see the reunion tour this year!)

I loved the Spice Girls as a kid, but they didn't quite carry through with me to adulthood - although I still really like a few songs and have immense respect for them!

Thanks for running this Gezza! Been fantastic to follow, and that's a great top three in the end for me.

Very happy with the winner, Girls Aloud were active just at the end of my tenure in secondary school, then throughout college and university and beyond, so the nostalgia I have with them is unreal. But this is backed up by an incredible catalogue of quirky and standout pop hits, completely different to what was around at the time and definitely not just another run of the mill in-vogue girlband of the time.

I'm glad that from Love Machine onwards and then definitely cemented by Biology, the likes of NME and The Guardian also started to rate them critically - as they deserved. And as they always deserved to be honest, their opening two singles were genius. Aside from a few choice cover versions, I pretty much love everything they released, and there are so many diamonds left on the albums too. Nadine and Nicola are two of my favourite girlband members - the vocals...amazing, and Nadine's personality is everything. Cheryl has great star quality to this day and it's no surprise she had a big solo career, the much missed Sarah was the energetic spark and fire in the group and Kimberley more than played her part with her warm vocals and her humour (particulalrly recently, leaning into the live memes of Something Kinda Ooooh). I've seen them live I think more than any act, most recently this summer, and they were always fantastic.

But talking of nostalgia, I couldn't not put Spice Girls in my top 10. The ultimate girlband in terms of cultural impact, absolutely astonishing how ubiquitous they were not just in the UK but also globally, and the all-conquering brand they became. All five were dynamic personalities, and that really helped - Victoria was classy and fashionable, Emma cute and had a warm tone, Mel B edgy and cool and a lovely lower register vocal, Mel C for me the best singer - awesome vocal and her ad-libs made everything better, and Geri just had the X factor - she wasn't the best at anything in particular for me yet she had the biggest personality and most iconic look and it felt like the group was a lot worse off without her. Together they were amazing. And I know they only put out such a small handful of singles, but all those high selling No.1s was crazy. And I know they were most known for their uptempos like Wannabe and Spice Up Your Life globally, but for me they were the very best girlband at ballads, and are unlikely to ever be beaten on that front - 2 Become 1 and Viva Forever are 10/10 classics, and I really loved Goodbye, Too Much and even Mama too (not Headlines oops). They totally deserve the acclaim they had.

Well I certainly wasn't expecting it that way round :o I'm happy with the top two, I don't think you can argue against that. Both great pop bands.

Thanks as always for your efforts in running this, Gezza, I can only imagine what a huge undertaking it is. I've thoroughly enjoyed following the results!

I didn't vote for any of the top lot but I do very much like Girls Aloud so I am happy to see them win out of the remaining options. A version of their singles collection is one of the few pure pop albums that I have on my phone and I'd found it easy to create a list of 20 tracks of theirs that I wouldn't want to skip. Particular favourites are The Loving Kind, Untouchable, Love Machine, Biology, Call the Shots, Wake Me Up and No Good Advice

Spice Girls are overrated imo - but that's because I tend to be more interested in the music itself than the people attached to it. I can see that they were a great band in terms of the concept, and I absolutely admire the people involved for the level of success they achieved and the message they put out there... but music wise, I would struggle to find more than about 5 songs of theirs I'd want to listen to.

ABBA I can appreciate more than I enjoy. They are undoubtedly a great pop band with a very strong discography... but I can't listen to more than about 3 songs in a row before I begin to get very irritated by their songs

Ooh, will definitely take part in this, thanks!

YES! My exact top 2 in my votes, was hoping the new GA tour would push them to the top spot, very deserved imo!

The top 5 is very predictable as always in these popularity things on Buzzjack.

So happy to see Girls Aloud get to win.

They were always for me the best pop group to come from the UK and they really deserved that love globally too. Their music i honestly feel genuinely stands the test of time it didn’t sound like anything else in the 00s and has aged so well. It’s a shame they were around at a time single sales weren’t at a high point because they almost deserved more success but you can’t argue with 20 top ten tracks in a row (and 21 in total!).

What a band they were. Their music was always high camp, full of personality and never safe as well. They’ll forever remain for me the ultimate girl group and I always think of them before anyone else on that front.

Personally prefer Spice Girls as they have the nostalgia for me with Spice season being large at school as a child and the upbeat numbers are fun but also in agreement on mostly loving their ballads even more. 'Viva Forever', 2 Become 1' are stunning and captivating but also like 'Goodbye' as well. 'Too Much' and 'Mama' less so but still good in themselves too.

Girls Aloud seemed the obvious winner this time round though with the tour and sad news with Sarah. They do have a lot of bangers though so it is deserved. 'Call The Shots', 'Untouchable', 'No Good Advice' are my 3 faves but 'Love Machine' and 'Biology' are also good too and 'Jump' is a fun cover from them for me too.

Thanks for this Gezza, what an humongous effort these things are and it's been real fun taking part and following ^_^

Thanks for running this again, Gezza. I managed to help two from my own vote, the Pet Shop Boys and Queen, into the top 10.

It's disappointing that the winning group didn't write any of their songs. Out of the top 2, I would have preferred the Spice Girls to win.

Apart from the songs they did help to write/ are credited on off course

I mean I am a huge fan of both bands so I can't be too upset with the result tbh, however I do feel like it is funny that Girls Aloud, who probably wouldn't exist were it not for the Spice Girls, beat them!

Obviously I am always going to support Spice Girls over Girls Aloud due to the fact I think their material on the whole is stronger. Girls Aloud really pushed the boundaries and created some incredible songs (and great albums) however they were not consistent until later on in the game. Up until the GH they relied heavily on covers alongside their (superior) original material, and their covers were generally rather naff (Jump being the exception) while Spice Girls never released as a single or featured a cover on their albums and their singles discography was 10/10 all the way through. They were not so huge just on their personalities alone (although that played a huge part) they had the solid material to back it up. Finally I feel like Spice Girls excelled at the ballad and have only ever been matched on this (almost) by Sugababes, Girls Aloud never really got that proper iconic ballad, I'll stand by you was their closest attempt but (as much as I like it) it doesn't quite hit the mark. I also love WLH but it isn't a patch on the ballads by Spice Girls, Sugababes or even Atomic Kitten lol!

Having said that... Girls Aloud original material is also excellent and I felt like the direction they ended up taking post WWTNS was basically the direction Spice Girls should have gone had they stayed together (rather than the RnB direction they favoured in Forever), that funky slightly out there British pop, which is very much how they started with Wannabe really.

Either way huge congrats to Girls Aloud they are one of my favourite bands of all time and they have just done what was probably their best tour ever showing they can still pull it out of the bag! I'd love to see them release some new material.
