That Guardian review is hilarious. A long-winded, roundabout way of saying... absolutely nothing at all

Pitchfork calling it a catastrophe too….

The way a month ago the tides had really turned and people were really excited for her comeback…she really threw it all away with this one.

I find some of the reactions to this so bandwagon obvious. I very much accept the idea that people think it’s generic/sounds like AI/a re-tread of her past/average but I find it hard to believe any fan of pop thinks this is actively “omg the worst song ever created” unless they want in to it determined to think that because of the Dr Luke association.

The production is very Stupid Love - I can't unhear it! And that's one of Gaga's weakest on the last album so it's not even praise from me necessarily like it should be.

The song is... fairly mid. It's passable and fun but for a big comeback single it is not it. It needs at least a killer middle-8 building into a final explosive chorus. A moment that makes everything come alive. Without that, it doesn't really have that WOW moment for me :(

For a supposed empowering anthem, it lacks any power?

I am trying so so hard to distance myself from the Dr Luke stuff and listen with an open mind. The fact that the song is so mediocre is really not igniting a passion for me to continue listening though. I'm shocked it took so many writers to create this too: is this Katy's message for the world, from her heart, expressing her truth as a mother... or an attempt to create a woman's anthem with the help of problematic men and people that don't really need to be involved in what should be such a rousing, empowering anthem. It feels so distanced from what it is aiming to be and dare I say it, disingenuous.

Literally. It's so transparent. But the people that are desperate to call her out for the Dr Luke production will have been completely silent for other Doja Cat and Kim Petras releases (and by association SZA and The Weeknd).

She looks amazing, the video is funny (the blowing herself back up bit made me laugh) and the song is very catchy, although lyrically I don't love it, but I think she'll struggle to overcome the Dr Luke association, particularly being a female empowerment song? Seems quite a choice. I'm certainly not particularly enthused about her continuing to work with him and am not even really that excited for the album (and I used to LOVE Katy).

Commercially, Never Really Over was my favourite single she ever released in the end, unusually considering how long past her commercial peak it was released, and on quality alone that should have been a long running top five and it just wasn't anywhere near achieving that, so I think this always had an uphill struggle and the extra baggage is not going to help her cause.

Ok I just gave this another spin with fresh morning ears and I stand by my opinion from last night. It's just ok, nothing mind blowing production wise (matter fact, little bit dated).

It's missing an oomph for me!!!

And I thought she might have had a chance at Top 20 peak considering people actually were talking about this for a while, plus tiktok exposure, but I really doubt now it will be commercially success, unfortunately!!!

Yeah, I do see a lot of the criticisms but agree some are also bandwagoning. Like some people who are trying to cancel

her for the Dr Luke stuff were happily bopping at dr Luke’s show a few months ago and stanning Super Freaky Girl last year. Obviously I agree and hate that she went back to him but I do also think it gives a lot of haters another reason to hate on her.

Anyway, yeah, the song just isn’t growing, it sounds the same level as Smile the song (derogatory) in that it goes nowhere.

I just can't imagine who thought a pro-feminist song produced by Dr Luke of all people was a good idea, like, really?

The video feels overly sexualised and male gaze-oriented as well, which somewhat contradicts the message it's aiming for as well and feels very off in the context of Dr. Luke producing it. Not that I imagine a lot of thought went into it.

But even separated from that context, the song is just really basic, not horrible but beyond cliched. Katy herself sounds bored singing this, and I know a lot of her songs have silly lyrics, but she at least injects character and sings them like she meant them. There's none of that here, just utterly throwaway in every sense. I'd believe you if you said this was AI genered.

So yeah, great comeback!

I havent seen the video yet, just the lyrics are so white feminism Hilary Clinton coded. Like are we seriously doing Women vs Men, women are smarter than men in 2024?
Like my assumption from the title was that it would be some kind of sendup of that concept or an ironic take, not literally something so on the nose. It's really not far from a lighter and softer Stupid Girls, except that song is nearly 20 years old.
Ok having seen the video it's giving ad for Gilead. Like. I am not sure if it was trying to be uncanny or if it's meant to be a sendup but the result feels like this is Katy trying to wipe away the fact she's had several eras since Prism. It reminds me of Fergie's MILF video where she tried to pretend MILF stood for something else and it was all empowering and not at all sexual.

I honestly think this is fun as hell and needed a little brainrot in these trying times. It's escapism in shot glass form.

Which means it makes sense that this and Katy are getting absolutely DOG WALKED on social media Drake style. Katycats are truly braver than any U.S. Marine.
