I mean now she’s going to have her worst performing studio album to date on her hands, so she might have another #1 but Tension II will (likely) always hold that shameful title. Tension 1 didn’t have the most respectable chart run either so it would’ve been nice to see that get a few more weeks in the charts.

Shameful to who? Literally the only people that care about chart runs are the fewer and fewer people that visit sites like this and some Kylie fans - the GP literally wouldn’t know if it spent 300 weeks in the charts or 1.

As far as the majority of people are concerned it’s been a smash - a 10th #1 which got the headlines and in the history books as one of the females with double digit #1 albums.

A lot of albums are suffering similar fate to tension II by big drops from no1. It’s just the current state of the market and way things are going. My concern is whether in the long run this will impact on artists releasing fewer albums as record companies continue to see their profits dwindle. You only have to look at the release schedule for Q4 this year to see it’s one of the worst ever in terms of lack of any major releases.
While 1-->50, or even 70 is generally pretty normal for some artists, it hasn't been normal for Kylie until now. Even Steps' What the Future Holds pt. 2 went "only" 2-21-81. Hope this makes them consider who Kylie in 2024 is as an artist and not just throw stuff out there just for visibility and/or fan service.

I think any Steps record released today would likely drop out of the top 75 in week 2, probably the top 100. Sadly it's just the way albums are going now unless you're a huge albums artist.

So maybe shameful was a dramatic word choice lol but it is very disappointing that it’s going to be Kylie’s lowest selling album ever and steal the title from an actual flop album! Especially after BMG’s up to this point excellent management of her legacy and basically reviving her career after KMO.

As always though chart positions don’t equate to success - Steps 2nd week sales at #21 was lower than Kylie’s sale for #52 this week.

Maybe it would make no difference as today's music scene is so different but I feel kylie hasn't fully supported both tension and T2 in the UK as much as she could and slightly feel she is neglecting her biggest market.

What else could she do in the UK, promo wise? Kylie has done every TV, radio and podcast gig that would have her in the last year. She also had 2 huge promo opportunities with An Audience With Kylie and the Brits and neither really made any difference to Tension’s sales or chart run.

I would agree that the promo for Tension II was minimal especially on Tension II’s release week, which felt a bit weird. Probably 85% of Kylie’s sales at this stage in her career is fan multi buying, so no amount of promo is going to change that.

Hopefully the Tension II drop this week, prompts a rethink at BMG and they come up with some strategies to prolong the chart run outside of week 1.

She done all the promo available in the UK aside from Breakfast TV -

Radio 2

Capital

The One Show

Opportunities for artists are few and far between.

Not that it overly matters but the figure for Steps was a bit higher! Kylie - 2,864 this week, whereas:

#21 - 3,261 sales - Steps - What the Future Holds Pt. 2 (week 2) [24/09/21]

#21 - 3,261 sales - Steps - Platinum Collection (week 2) [02/09/22]

(Yep, both of those albums at #21 in week 2, and with the exact same sales   )

It certainly shows how much higher the sales are at the moment though, with this week's #22 selling 5,559.

#52 in that week of September 2021 only needed 1,834 sales - so about a thousand less than Kylie sold this week.

It seems as time goes on, all the classic studio albums/Greatest Hits generate even more sales per week (via streaming), and are making it harder for a frontloaded album like Kylie to stay afloat.

I feel like BMG could have tried somewhat harder though, do they just not care to try and sell anything after the first week?

Apparently so - every artist they have gets everything thrown at Week 1 (Steps, Rick Astley, Kylie etc.,).

They could have easily held back the extended remix download for week 2 and the CD/signed prints - they didn’t need the extra sales for week 1 so bemused they rushed those out at the last minute.

I’m sure reductions will come but as always far too late to impact chart performance.

(I also find it odd that they insist on keeping hold of old stock - the Disco Boxset for example, surely it’s selling nothing atm with the £75 price tag and they would be better off offloading them?!).

I think this will become the norm for most of her future releases with the way the albu chart is nowadays, and it is what it is.

I think this could maybe at least eventually crawl past Let's Get To It, unsure about Impossible Princess.

Guessing we’re gonna have a 1-52-out chart run as can’t see it holding on for a 3rd week :drama:

Get some £4.99 reductions on Amazon, BMG!

A little late to the party but I’m really not sure what’s there to be ashamed of. This is a smart businesswoman that we’re talking about. Instead of releasing a deluxe edition, which is four or five bonus tracks, which would’ve also meant the same fate on the chart, she instead released it as a brand new album used it to sell her tour tickets, got a number one album and in the process made headlines with “record breaking 10th no1”. No one is going to talk about the chart run of an album or how it did on week two other than Kylie fans.

100% I agree totally

The concern comes from the fact that only that amount of people (especially casuals who might not buy but stream instead) bothered to find out about an album with 9 new solo tracks!

Now, we don't know if naming the album Tension II hurt the sales, it might have, but this will be her lowest selling studio album of all time and she needs to improve from there with the next project.

Lower album sales are more the norm these days and there are other artists like Katy Perry who are doing far worse than Kylie.

If you look at the album charts, it’s the way the market is going sadly. Rag n Bone man released a new album on same week as Kylie and reached no2, but his album fell out of the T75 the week after.

This tbh - if we look at comparable latest releases from females that are far into their career:

Paloma Faith: 2-37-87

Jesse Ware: 3-68

Dolly Parton: 5-64

Katy Perry: 6-out

Rita Ora: 6-out

Jess Glynne: 6-out

Alison Moyet: 8-out

Lady Gaga: 11-out

Cher: 44-out

Emeli Sande: 49-out

Jennifer Lopez: 55-out

And aside from the above we commonly see artists drop from 1 to outside of the Top 100 (Shed Seven, Ben Howard etc)
