One of them was Coincidence which earnt its first ever play on Radio 1 yesterday 😭

bringing this up here cos i wanna get some thoughts on whether you guys think it’s right for songs Radio 1 avoided / never played to be brought onto anthems. I saw some talk of songs like Blu Cantrell - Breathe infamously getting ignored and then is treated like this massive Radio 1 Anthem. My trouble comes with songs they never played before (Sabrina Carpenter had another one this week with ‘Nobody's Son’) getting added to anthems? I think it's a little redundant to use the anthems terminology if radio 1 didn't back them to begin with.

BBC Radio 1 Most Played 2025 2026 has arrived and get what else has come with it? You guessed it! The annual review of the most played songs and artists on BBC Radio 1 during 2025. As usual, I used

  • For anybody interested, the Official Chart of the Year will be happening this year on Boxing Day from 2-6pm. It is with Dan Draper this year who I think is a new name to the chart.

  • I wonder if there may be a popular website consisting of some kind of engine that you can use to search and find the answer to that x

I would imagine whoever puts the shows together is A) not looking at what was previously on the main playlist to determine what gets played (though something like Breathe could've been played on the station without being on the playlist as such) or B) they know that only small corners of the internet like this will actually have that knowledge that they didn't playlist the song and they hope no one really notices in the grand scheme of things.

i think its B ngl. It’s just insanely funny when they call album tracks anthems (they've done it for Ariana and Sabrina notoriously)

I remember somebody said all the Clubland type stuff didnt get played on Radio 1 in the 00s (Fly On The Wings of Love, Scooter, Flip and Fill, Cascada, Basshunter) etc. Apart from Ultrabeat Pretty Green Eyes which they did play and I think its still played as a Radio 1 anthem but in a weird trance remix for some reason.

Funny, I always thought Scooter and Cascada did get played at the time!

i think tbh it's better to right an injustice for the benefit of the listeners than focus on it as a case of stolen valour, i'd rather just hear the songs in the end : )

They always played the CJ Stone remix even at the time when originally playlisted.

Definitely more Anthems popping up in normal shows these days even outside of features, Viva La Vida on now for no particular reason and that's from 18 years ago!

There's still been a change, until a few years back most recurrents were from the past five years, now older ones appear much more regularly.

Reminds me of the first lockdown where they went right back to the 90s with some of the recurrents

Yeah, I remember them playing Groove Is In The Heart etc, that was 30 years old even then!

At the time they were very relaxed about how old the tunes were as it was all about just keeping our spirits up.

It was a nice treat during an awful time.

And GITH never gets old tbf!

Before R1 Anthems or Radio 1's Greatest Hits as it was originally called you rarely heard anything over five years old outside of the NIckstape/Ten Minute Takeover if I remember rightly.

I do hear quite a lot of 90s on Radio 1 Anthems and R1 Dance even though the former in particular is supposed to be all about the 21st century, The biggest Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Spice Girls and Oasis hits will have a place in the Radio 1 world for quite some time yet though I think, they don't really age.
