Posted August 13, 2024Aug 13 Still another 15 days away from it starting but thought I'd get the thread up sooner rather than later! Discussion for all things Paralympic-related this year.
August 13, 2024Aug 13 Author Getting this going with the news that Valentina Petrillo will be the first transgender athlete to compete at the Paralympics. May well generate some discussion (although may also well be similar to the Laurel Hubbard situation where she doesn't get close to medalling in the end)
August 14, 2024Aug 14 Always look forward to the paralympics Zak Skinner is the one I'm watching out for
August 28, 2024Aug 28 A girl from the school where I work will be competing in the table tennis tomorrow. Good luck Bly!
August 28, 2024Aug 28 That was a stunning opening ceremony, and it's great to see the balloon back. A double dose of Christine & The Queens as well
August 28, 2024Aug 28 Time for a bit more about Bly Twomey who I mentioned earlier. She is the Sussex women's table tennis champion, a title she won around the time of her fourteenth birthday. That's the overall women's champion, not para table tennis champion. She was competing against able-bodied women. She's only been playing since she was eleven. A couple years or so ago, one of my colleagues challenged her to a match. He is ultra-competitive and would not have made any concessions. She wiped the floor with him.
August 29, 2024Aug 29 Four matches for Bly today. Three wins and one defeat means that she is in the last eight of the Mixed Doubles. Her one defeat was in the SF of the Womens' Doubles, but that still means that she gets a bronze medal. Her next match is at 10:00 tomorrow,
August 30, 2024Aug 30 Author I hadn't heard much of Bly Twomey before this week but great to see her get a bronze in the Mixed Doubles yesterday, I imagine there's quite a few Paralympics left in her! And a great start for GB in general, two golds on the first day and more coming today as well.
August 31, 2024Aug 31 Yes, Bly could easily compete in the next four Games. Bearing in mind she has only been playing for three years, she could be a contender for a clutch of medals. Just the singles left for this year.
August 31, 2024Aug 31 Author David Weir finishing 8th in the 5000m final - all so close and tactical, on another day it could have been a completely different order!
August 31, 2024Aug 31 Author I was thinking that! Felt a bit disrespectful given the seriousness of the things being discussed? Glad she got the gold in the end though! Hope the Uzbek fighter is ok.
September 2, 2024Sep 2 Author A shame Johnnie Peacock didn't quite get a medal - went off really early but couldn't keep it up. Nice to see us get a gold in the shotput yesterday though!
September 2, 2024Sep 2 Bly has got a bye into the QF of the Women's singles, so she will get another medal if she wins that match. She'll be back at school next week!
September 4, 2024Sep 4 Bly won her QF today, so she is guaranteed at least another bronze medal. She plays her SF tomorrow. Her QF was conveniently scheduled for break-time, but tomorrow's SF is in lesson time, unfortunately.
September 5, 2024Sep 5 Bly lost her QF, so gets a second bronze medal. She was playing the world number two, so it is not a surprise. At just 14, Bly is currently ranked number four in the world.
September 6, 2024Sep 6 Seems to be that in throughout the evening C4 show one event then analysis, one event then analysis.
