Forgive me if there's a thread like this already.

I'm talking songs that shot up the charts directly after usage in a TV show or film. I was wondering if I should include artists who performed on things like X Factor, but usually artists performed on there in the week of release anyway.

Birdy's Wings reached the top 10 thanks to being used in the Lloyds TSB advert. Both "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls and "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman reached the top 5 in 2011 after covers on X Factor and Britain's Got Talent respectively.

Running Up that Hill is a more recent example.

the list would be infinite I reckon
There will be countless examples of this throughout chart history. Even in the 90s this was a big thing - songs like 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' and 'Spaceman' went to #1 from being used in Levi's adverts, and Roxette's 'It Must Have Been Love' was reissued and returned to the top 10 when Pretty Woman was shown on TV for the first time.

Florence & The Machine - Dog Days Are Over

Mason vs Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder)

Journey - Don’t Stop Believing

Sugababes - About You Now

Christina Aguilera- Hurt

Evanescence- My Immortal

John Legend - Ordinary People

Adele - Make You Feel My Love

MIA - Paper Planes

The Script - The Man Who Can’t Be Moved

Wilson Philips - Hold On

Faith Hill - There You’ll Be

Beyoncé - Listen

Jason Mraz - I Won’t Give Up

A lot of 90s number ones got there for non-music reasons like this. The 3 longest running number ones were all in films, Bryan Adams in Robin Hood, Wet Wet Wet in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard.

Then there were all the advert songs, most notably the Levi's advert. We also had 3 number ones from Robson & Jerome who started off singing on the TV show "Soldier Soldier".

Then the X Factor ones

Shakespears Sister - Stay

Goo Goo Dolls - Iris

Train - Drops of Jupiter

Alexa Goddard - Turn My Swag On

Take My Breath Away and (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life both re-entered the top 40 in 1990 when Top Gun and Dirty Dancing were both broadcast on TV
