Doing an inventory this evening I worked out I have currently 605 CDs in my home that I've acquired over many years. I don't buy as many these days except for compilations and any second-hand finds.

I'm debating what the best method of storage is for a collection this large as I embark on a project to store them in a different room and remove them from the flat plastic containers they have been in for so long now.

How many do you have and how to you store them?

I'm not going to count my CDs but the shelf in my dresser appears to hold 150 of them. I've recently run out of space for more CDs there, so I either need to store them elsewhere or start getting rid of some. I don't own any vinyl nor do I ever plan to.
Somewhere between 100-120 CDs. Didn't buy anything after the death of music market in Russia (2012-2013 year).

I have like 500 Cds and 200 vinyls

Cds in those "towers" to store CDs

Vinyls on an IKEA Kallax :D but not it's 100% full so need to figure out how to store future vinyl

I haven't got that many vinyls (probably around 40) but I've got about 500 albums on CD which sit (in alphabetical order obvs) on custom-built shelves:

Fortunately my car still has a CD player so I can play CDs in the car.

I also have about 60 of the NOW albums on CD, I'm hoping to get round to completing the collection at some point.

I've also got probably close to 1,000 CD singles in the loft and maybe a couple of hundred compilations - I haven't played these for years but I just don't have the heart to get rid of them!

That's quite an impressive and colourful collection Wardy! Have you stored them in alphabetical order?

Yes, the top two rows are studio albums by artists and they are in alphabetical order.

The next two rows are Now compilations, 1-118, complete with no gaps.

The next row is Now Dance compilations and other spin-offs released.

The next row are my current collection of Now Yearbook editions and extras.

After the Now CDs are through there are the Hits series, TOTP and Smash Hits, along with other miscellaneous pop compilations.

The next row are dance compilations including Floorfillas, Clubland and Ministry of Sound.

A small selection of indie and alternative compilations are next, together with some acoustic compilations.

The penultimate row is dedicated to my large collection of chillout compilations that I bought in large volume during a time in my life.

The last row are free discs from magazines (TOTP, TV Hits etc).

I have around 700 CDs at a guess. I probably had a similar number around 10 years ago but got rid of a few, mostly CD singles. I also used to have over 300 tapes, mostly tape packs from raves but converted most to MP3 and managed to sell them on eBay when I first moved to London and had a lot less space.

I have multiple CD drawers/towers/racks and I also keep them in alphabetical order otherwise it would take me forever to find one.

I'm very jealous about this as I've only got about half at the moment! Did you buy them all new or are many of them second hand from charity shops etc. like mine are?

Also do you still regularly play your CDs?

Many were purchased second hand before Now 39.

I don't yet, but I was recently inspired by another BuzzJack member to start an instagram channel for reviewing my music collection so I'm going to enjoy getting the CDs off the shelves again and reading the inlets, listening to the discs (to also check for quality) and then post a review. ^_^

That is seriously impressive.

@🥭 why are some of the CDs sticking out over the edge of the shelves? it’s bothering me!

It's because they're odd sizes. The one in the middle is Kylie's Golden album in an A5-size book format. It bothers me a bit too but there's nothing I can do about it!

My vinyl collection is now at 500+ records after collecting for a little over 10 years; I received a record player for my 17th birthday and the rest was history.

I have gone through phases of more intense collecting (e.g. during lockdown, my online spending in general was a bit out of control) but I've slowed down over the past couple of years, due to storage space filling up and prices soaring. I have about 200 CDs (they're in the loft so just a rough guess) and maybe 30 cassettes.

I have two storage units for my record collection and organise them alphabetically by artist name. I incorporated dividers for each letter to help identify what I want to play quicker.

I had a collection of about 600 CDs, but then managed to half it to 200 to 100. I got rid of music I grew out of and artists I just landed disliking for various reasons (Paloma Faith). All are in two big storage boxes which are in a storage unit (I had to move in with family due to problems at home).

Got a number of vinyls in storage too.

Ahhhhh! In that case I forgive you

Just realised I never actually answered Wardy's question myself. I have a ridiculous number of physical albums and singles. I started my collection when I was about 10 and basically bought about 1 album and about 5 singles nearly every week during secondary school and then largely albums when I left school and started work etc. I lost count but I'd estimate I had in excess of 1000 CD albums and probably about the same amount of singles... and then I stopped buying physical formats altogether when digital downloads became a thing, the last CD singles I bought were With Every Heartbeat and Handle Me back in 2007 and even they were probably the first I'd bought in a while...

...and then I started purchasing vinyl over the past decade, and according to discogs I've got 1,686 of them(!) which I've never actually realised until I am typing it right now. That figure will be a bit out as I know I've documented a few rarer CD albums on there, although no more than about 100 or so I don't think. It's a ridiculous amount but the purchase of a turntable and a need for something to do during lockdown just reignited the obsessive collector in me... and the sheer volume of potential purchases both current and historical faves was too tempting a prospect for me to resist. I still do buy now but far more sporadically - I've only added 17 this year! :cheer:

In not entirely unconnected news I have today taken delivery of 10 huge storage crates and I'm going to be putting all the things I've bought but don't think I'd miss into said crates and transferring them to the garage... at the moment all of the records are split between two long low units in the bedroom and a huge 25 cube Kallax storage unit in my office room... but the original intention was never for that unit to be completely full of albums, so it's time to strip it back and put a mixture of other things in there so it isn't quite as oppressive as a sight.

I have about 100-120 vinyl records and a mad amount of CDs, definitely into the thousands, maybe 3,000-4,000 at a guess. I really need to go through them and sort because they take up so much space and clearly I won't ever have time to listen many of them again. I didn't pay full price for them all - half are probably from charity shops over the years.

I wish there was a quick way to digitise them all in a way that they would definitely never be lost to technology fails.

I've saved a good third of them at least to iTunes, but twice yearly or so my iTunes library corrupts itself and I have to rebuild it. It's incredibly frustrating.

I've known people who have a lot of CDs but that's by far the biggest collection of anyone I've ever known! You must have been buying 5+ a week at one point!

Back in the day, Asda used to sell off bargain bin chart singles for 1p (yes, really), and I got loads of singles that way.

I have also picked up several batches of over 100 albums at a time, for about £25-£50 a pop, over the years.

So while it sounds like an insane number, most have been sourced in cheap ways, in large quantities. But I do still on average buy 2-3 CDs a week even now (including charity shop stuff, so I rarely spend much).
