Following the same structure used in the Dance and Electronic forum, we are going to run the same weekly poll for new indie and alternative releases in 2025. Each week, 8 new releases are selected to go head to head, with one weekly winner which will then go up against future weekly winners later in the year at the end of each quarter of the year, and then again at the end of the year to determine the ultimate winner of 2025.

Each week, choose one song only that you feel is your favourite from the selection of releases that week. If you wish to post a rate of the selection of songs in the thread, please feel free to do so.

Here are this week's contenders:

Doves – Cold Dreaming

Ethel Cain – Amber Waves

Franz Ferdinand – Hooked

Japanese Breakfast – Orlando in Love

Manic Street Preachers – People Ruin Paintings

Sports Team – Bang Bang Bang

Squid – Building 650

The Amazons – My Blood

The Lumineers – Same Old Song

zzzahara – In Your Head

Results of this week's poll will be revealed in next week's thread. The poll will remain open until the following Friday.

Ok, I did consult with Whoddy before I posted this but it was late, so I appreciate the input and welcome it for all future weeks until such a time when perhaps one of you two can continue this poll instead as I'm doing the Pop forum one too. ;)

I'll accept the 10 this week but future weeks will always be 8 songs and there will be some weeks we have to miss some releases, so I will do my best to pick the most notable ones.

where are Heartworms?

This!

I do like this idea though.

There a five singles out this week that I like - Heartworms, Bob Vylan & Amy Taylor, Lacuna Coil, Dana Dentata and the Manics.

The Manics track is the least interesting for me but it gets my vote here.

Interestingly, and for reasons I can't really explain Squid just aren't that well thought of in Brighton, which is weird as the town loves its own normally.

Ethel Cain - after giving this track a third listen, I think I'm getting it now. Think I'd need to sit quietly in a darkened room for an hour and a half to appreciate the whole album though.

(Also another vote in spirit for Heartworms)

i fear this is not a good batch :( went for amber waves (will catch up on ethel cain's latest album tho x)

Always going to be difficult to produce a list of this kind given the amount of releases there are each week, I think this does a good job of it.

I voted for Ethel. Squid, Doves and Franz (+ Heartworms) are all decent but none anywhere near as good as songs previously released from those campaigns. The rest of the list I didnt care for.

I also needed to listen to “Amber Waves” a couple of times to be on board but I’m there.

That’s my #1

The Amazons #2 - a good old fashioned anthemic rock tune

Franz Ferdinand #3 - this wouldn’t be a bad Eurovision pick at all in my view, though not a winner
