Following the same structure used in the Dance and Electronic forum, we are going to run the same weekly poll for new indie and alternative releases in 2025. Each week, 8 new releases are selected to go head to head, with one weekly winner which will then go up against future weekly winners later in the year at the end of each quarter of the year, and then again at the end of the year to determine the ultimate winner of 2025.

Last week's results;

Mumford & Sons – Rushmere [ 6 ] ** [30.00%]

Architects – Blackhole [ 4 ] ** [20.00%]

Lucy Dacus – Ankles [ 3 ] ** [15.00%]

Skunk Anansie – An Artist Is An Artist [ 3 ] ** [15.00%]

Jungle – Keep Me Satisfied [ 2 ] ** [10.00%]

Inhaler – A Question For You [ 1 ] ** [5.00%]

The Wombats – Can't Say No [ 1 ] ** [5.00%]

Biig Piig – One Way Ticket [ 0 ] ** [0.00%]

==========

Total Votes: 20

Returning to their old sound, Mumford & Sons returned in 2025 with a promising single from their forthcoming album, RUSHMERE, their first album in seven years. It is set to be released on 28 March 2025.

Can you unlock the other thread pls, I was literally 2 minutes away from voting (I did ask you to wait for me -_-)

I'm pretty sure you can unlock your own threads! (I'm able to lock/unlock my threads in the International Charts forum which I'm not a mod of for example x)

Dw anyway, if you can just add 1 onto Lucy Dacus in the OP that'd have the same effect :magic:

edit: ah I see it is unlocked now so added my vote there x

Ranking from that last poll:

1 Lucy Dacus

2 Mumford & Sons

3 Jungle

4 Biig Piig

5 Skunk Anansie

6 Architects

7 The Wombats

8 Inhaler

Pretty mediocre list, the Lucy one is the only one I'll be coming back to.

Belated ranking for week 1 (or 2 I guess x):

1 Squid

2 zzzahara

3 Doves

4 Manic Street Preachers

5 Ethel Cain

6 The Amazons

7 Japanese Breakfast

8 Franz Ferdinand

9 Sports Team

10 The Lumineers

That was a much better list, I've playlisted all of my top 5 there.

This week's rankings;

1. Good Neighbours – Ripple

2. The Lathums – Heartbreaker

3. Deacon Blue – How We Remember It

4. Nova Twins – Monsters

5. Sam Fender – Arm's Length

6. Djo – Basic Being Basic

7. Papa Roach – Even If It Kills Me

8. The Darkness – Rock and Roll Party Cowboy

Seconding the lack of Viagra Boys. Lead single from a new album and all that.

Would have made it a tough choice to pick a fave too

I think it's difficult to even figure out whats a single these days

Im not even sure whats the current FKA single, cos she released a video for Striptease yesterday

but at the same time the song pushed on NMF was Childlike things so no clue actually

The Lathums' one is a bit of a tune so voted for that. The Nova Twins and Sam Fender songs are decent too.

The funny thing is nobody was volunteering to do this in all the time this forum has been here before.

I'm not going to pretend I know what's best because I don't. The selections are a mix from music from New Music Friday playlists on Spotify, music that is doing well in the iTunes chart (released since the last Friday) and maybe an album track from a noteworthy release (again as Bjork says it's hard to always identify which one is the more prominent).

Regarding FKA Twigs, I did consult her album and all the resources I could but I couldn't find a specific song that was being pushed from this week's output.

If someone wished to do a poll of "Indie Album of the Week" then it would probably win hands down.

Also, I'm only limiting it to 8 songs each week which is the standard used in the Dance forum too, so there simply isn't enough room for everyone, and Whoody also suggested another name that I couldn't include which was Lord Huron, but I did include 6 of his other suggestions.

I'm not going to presume to speak for others but please don't take my comments as a complaint. They're not. I definitely appreciate what you're doing here and I agree that picking only 8 is a tough task to narrow it down.

The fact that others are engaing with the thread on any level suggests people are interested in the idea.

My mentions of other artists not included is only a naming of what I'm liking from new releases, whether it will factor into what gets included in future weeks is up to you.

Happy if it does, happy if it doesn't.

At the very least the threa highlights multiple new releases and some that people may not be aware of, so that's a plus either way.

Nova Twins the best bunch of this :kink:

also where's Mogwai??

Sandhouse - Circus is a recommendation of mine x

TBH I'm all for there not being a song off a brand new included as hard to know which is necessarily being pushed, and in this day and age all those are typically done before the album's release. If it had been running longer, I'm sure fka Twigs would have had 2-3 entries previously included, and wouldn't definitely necessitate a 4th this week.
