Posted January 24Jan 24 Since streaming was added into the chart in 2014, what has been your favourite chart year? Edited January 24Jan 24 by eman
January 24Jan 24 Maybe 2017, because the Ed domination and subsequent introduction of ACR rules made it fresher and less predictable for a while. And 2023 because there was some great charting pop/dance, Kylie's top ten return and four Eurovision songs in the top ten simultaneously. Worst was the horrendous slog that was 2016, both musically and in terms of the chart's pace (and the year in general in terms of global news, politics and deaths of legends). January 24Jan 24 Author Imagining there'll be a lot of null votes for this :kink: I'm shocked somebody's voted for 2016
January 24Jan 24 2021 was the year I got interested in the charts, there was relatively fast movement (for the charts with streaming) aside from Ed/Kid Laroi domination over the summer. A lot of big songs and artists dominating that year but not as dominant as the big hits from 2024 are currently. That's why it gets my vote
January 24Jan 24 Wow nothing above 1 vote so far! I went for 2024 which I really think was the best year of the streaming age.
January 24Jan 24 I went for 2024 which I really think was the best year of the streaming age. I really thought about voting 2024, some of the best music of the decade and big cultural moments but the old stuff just hung around for so long that it got a bit tiring.
January 24Jan 24 2020 for me, both because I found the charts more of an escapism that year as it was about the only interest of mine that didn't temporarily cease and because the majority of #1s that year were brilliant and way better quality than all the other years.
January 24Jan 24 2024. If I could vote for more than one then it would be any year except 2022 and 2023 due to Calm Down by Rema
January 24Jan 24 Going to have to go to 2014, which wasn't a year I enjoyed at the time (mostly due to my personal situation) but later on I realised how many great songs there were during that time. It's not my peak student era anymore, but still an age where "my era" of artists like Katy B and Example could get top 10 hits, and the Eurovision domination was great that year too. My chart knowledge really drops off a cliff from mid-2017 onwards, Clean Bandit's 'Symphony' marks a bit of an end of an era for me as the majority of #1s from that time onwards I'm not massively aware of. But then I did turn 30 the following year so maybe it was just a moment that happens to many, my parents equally start to know less songs from the late 1990s onwards when they turned that age.
January 24Jan 24 Ignoring One Dance though, 2016 has bangers. It was a horrible year for me. Everything either either sounded like plinky-plonky mid-tempo tropical house or that Chainsmokers printer jamming sound, and the chart generally moved like a tortoise in peanut butter.
January 25Jan 25 2020 for me, both because I found the charts more of an escapism that year as it was about the only interest of mine that didn't temporarily cease and because the majority of #1s that year were brilliant and way better quality than all the other years. Same for me - it's the only time I can remember the EOY top 8 all being songs I like, plus there were some close races for #1, and the small matter of Mariah's Christmas song finally getting there! (And Wham! although that was technically 2021 and for the first of many times already...) 2014 was one of the best years but there was still a lot of forgettable stuff debuting at #1 or very high and disappearing quickly.
January 26Jan 26 I'm bad at comparing entire years to each other so my answer would probably change if I did a bit more ~research~ but from a cursory glance at the list of #1s I've gone with 2018 as it stands out as having a good number of 'moment' #1s - 'Three Lions' getting back to the top, 'Funky Friday' feeling like one of the more out of nowhere big hits we've had in recent(ish) years, 'Shallow' with its nice climb to finally return Gaga to the top of the charts, and as much as I hated it at least the first LadBaby campaign had the element of making the Christmas #1 feel meaningful and it had an actually interesting race unlike a couple of the later ones. And a couple of other great #1s too. The only statement I am confident in making is that 2016 is the worst.
January 26Jan 26 2014, cause even if the music wasn't the best it was really fun trying to predict the number 1 each week from where pre-orders were charting on iTunes, although it was definitely more fun in the first half of the year compared to the second.
