Jessie Ware and Two Door Cinema Club are now currently in the Radio 2 bracket (though both often feature with their 2010s hits on Radio 1's Anthems/10s shows) as R2 have more recently playlisted both artists.

It's a natural lifecycle of an artist really, with the exception of some acts who manage to cling on to relevance forever meaning they get that ongoing support from Radio 1.

It does tend to be a ten-year limit unless they're really big.

I followed the R1 playlists in the early 2000s - of those mentioned in the thread, 'I'm Outta Love' wasn't playlisted (nor were any of Anastacia's subsequent hits), but 'Whenever, Wherever' was, albeit only C-list iirc.

A few others that weren't, some less surprising than others:

Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out? [and more obviously Bob The Builder, Cheeky Girls...]

Bon Jovi - It's My Life

Cascada - Everytime We Touch [at least early on]

Santana feat. Rob Thomas - Smooth

Scooter - The Logical Song

The Calling - Wherever You Will Go, I can't remember 100% if it didn't or just got C-listed - they were quicker to playlist the follow-up so perhaps they realised they missed out there, similar to Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag only getting C-list but then 'A Little Respect' got B-listed and 'Leroy' A-listed before they went back into obscurity.

The Wheatus example I didn’t know. In mean in 2001 they would be a perfect nu metal group R1 were lapping up in their drives with other bands!

(mod note - merged with "ARTISTS PREMATURELY BINNED OFF BY RADIO 1/SENT TO RADIO 2")

Hi everyone,

I'm back with another annoying thread that people will criticise but contribute to anyway.

I'll get the ball rolling with Jessie Ware and Two Door Cinema Club.

Not a massive fan of P!nk but her songs still do well on streaming and in the charts etc and it seemed they binned her off the second she turned 40. Kylie an obvious example. She only got on twice in two years because one went viral and the other was with The Blessed Madonna, who isn't exactly 20 herself but still a relatively 'new' artist.

I'd never heard of a Trust Fall/Trustfall until a few years ago.

To be fair Pink did get a lot of support through the eras from R1, from 2000-2020!

Foo Fighters and David Guetta are exceptions. FF haven't had a top 40 hit since 2011 and R1 playlists them with every era.

I’m not sure I’d consider Wheatus nu-metal!

^haha thought the same. Nu metal is Slipknot not Wheatus.

Wheatus were pop rock or alt rock at most

Well whatever you want to class them as they were typical of a lot of bands of that era which R1 played a lot.

I don’t think top 40 hits is the only criteria for a playlisting.

Padam Padam is the only one I can think where they playlisted it due to pressure.

Moves Like Jagger-they sort of caved here though it never made the playlist. They had dropped both Maroon 5 and Christina by the time this was released and even when it was played on the chart, it used to get no fanfare whatsoever compared to other songs in the top ten. But it arguably gets played on Radio 1 more now than it did back then and they then playlisted every Maroon 5 song for the next decade.

Hips Don’t Lie wasn’t playlisted and whilst it was no.1, they did a segment where they asked people in the street why they like the song so much. She Wolf was then playlisted in 2009.

Alexandra Burke was dropped after Broken Heels which seemed extremely premature given they kept other similar artists going. Much longer.

Likewise Paloma Faith stopped getting playlisted after Picking Up The Pieces which seems really odd.

I think Anastacia only ever got playlisted with I’m Outta Love but I’m not sure. I do remember she got a few plays when the album chart got more focus back in 2004, I remember Wes playing Sick & Tired before it charted and saying that listeners had texted in about how good the song was.

I’m amazed Pink got playlisted as long as she did. Shame though that she got dropped given Trustfall would have slotted in perfectly but this was the point I jumped ship to Radio 2 anyway.

It’s ridiculous that they just “drop” artists! It shouldn’t be a case of “right, Christina’s too old now get her off to Radio 2”, then even if she gets a big hit they just won’t acknowledge it. This attitude is so antiquated, trying so hard to be “cool” is the least cool thing you can do.

I get that they want to keep things fresh a relevant. But I do think they were quicker to dust artists off in the late 2000s-more so than they are now. Christina and Maroon 5 had come off the back of no.1 albums when they got dropped but it was almost like Radio 1 were quickly ushering them into retirement.

The timing of them dropping Christina was quite bizarre. She was still pretty young, was considered a huge act and had just had a pretty successful era with Back to Basics.

I was shocked at the time when they dropped Madonna, I assumed she'd be one of those acts who would be playlisted forever.

Wasn’t there a sort of orchestrated campaign against Christina by Perez Hilton or something?

I think they want to attract a young audience which is the theory behind dropping artists so artists that aren’t dance/punk and can transition easily to R2 MOR audience are in danger of being moved to R2 sooner than they should. It’s the bbc charter that R1 is the young persons station and R2 is for the older audience.

I’m maybe mistaken but I’m sure ‘Trustfall’ was playlisted and so was the other singles from the album.
