There's been a lot of publicity around Jamie Laing's Comic Relief thing, so not too surprised they're not doing the chart today.

To be fair, there was a lot of heavy publicity on Radio 1 for this.

  • Boo! I’d tuned in specially to hear “Lose Control” for the 374th time.

  • Don't think Jamie has done enough running yet, maybe he can run down the chart once he's finished

I think what bothered me most wasn't the coverage of Jamie Laing's marathon, but it was the fact they played other music in between the coverage, when they could've easily played the new entries

Biography

Talk about an unexpected career trajectory. In 2007, 23-year-old Calvin Harris released I Created Disco, a cheeky shot across dance music’s bow that presented him as Scotland’s brow-arched answer to LCD Soundsystem. Fast forward a few years, and the scruffy fellow playing house-party host in the “Merrymaking at My Place” video is suddenly baring oil-slicked abs on Emporio Armani billboards. What happened, of course, is that Harris (born Adam Richard Wiles in 1984) traded up from the Amiga computer of his teens, developed some of the best studio chops in the business with deep-house rollers like 2013’s “Thinking About You”, and helped spark EDM’s pop crossover with hits for Rihanna, Florence Welch, Ellie Goulding and others. Along the way, he became one of the 2010s’ first DJ/producer/songwriter polymaths to earn top billing even on the songs in which he didn’t sing. No stranger to pyro-lit main stages—his percussive, synth-strafed 2014 single “C.U.B.A” is big-room house at its most gargantuan—Harris has resisted getting boxed into any one sound. On 2017’s Funk Wav Bounces, Vol. 1, he lays down a set of slinky R&B jams for Frank Ocean, Migos and Young Thug, while the 2018 singles “Promises”, with Sam Smith, and “One Kiss”, with Dua Lipa, proved just how versatile his vision of pop can be. And for anyone needing more proof, look no further than Harris’ return to the studio with Goulding—“Miracle” and “Free”—both of which appear on 2024’s 96 Months and revel in ’90s trance and breakbeat hardcore vibes. - Apple Music

Label: Haim Productions Inc.

Biography

HAIM has never approved of being “put in a box,” as the trio’s eldest sibling, Este Haim, told Apple Music in 2020. “We don’t care about genre or sticking to any sort of script,” middle sister Danielle confirmed. “We have the most fun when nothing is off limits.” The LA-born trio—completed by youngest sister Alana—officially formed in 2007 (prior to that, they performed across LA together as the covers band Rockenhaim, joined by their music-loving parents), but it wasn’t until 2012 that they saw their band as a viable career choice. That year brought the release of debut EP Forever, which showcased that box-evading sound: a meeting of the ’70s and ’80s music they grew up with alongside pop, R&B, and hip-hop. By 2013, HAIM had earned the top spot on the prestigious BBC Sound Of list and released a critically acclaimed debut album, Days Are Gone. Its follow-up, 2017’s slick Something to Tell You, saw the sisters revisit the breezy pop and rock melodies of their debut and lace them with more emotional depth. If a sprawling global tour provided further proof of HAIM’s prowess (thanks to live shows taking the polished sound of their first two albums to raw new places), it was also a time during which Este, Danielle, and Alana were heading towards a collective downward spiral. Between them, they were dealing with depression, heartbreak, grief, and health issues (Este has type 1 diabetes). With 2019’s Lou Reed-indebted “Summer Girl”—a show of support to Danielle’s partner and HAIM producer Ariel Rechtshaid as he battled cancer—the sisters began to process that rock bottom in public. Its follow-ups, “Now I’m in It” and “Hallelujah,” further hinted at the vulnerability to come on the band’s third record, 2020’s Women in Music Pt. III. “A big theme on this album is recognizing your sadness and expelling it with a lot of aggression,” Danielle told Apple Music upon its release. “It feels good to scream it in song form.” Meditations on the misogyny they have faced as female musicians only bolstered the power of the album, which was nominated for an Album of the Year Grammy in 2020. But despite those sometimes heavy subjects, Women in Music Pt. III is also HAIM at their most playful—and accomplished. “We wanted it to sound fun,” added Danielle. “Everything about the album was just spontaneous and about not taking ourselves too seriously.” - Apple Music

Biography

When singer-songwriter Billie Eilish feels something new, the first thing she does is take out her phone and write it down. “You can write anything,” she told Apple Music in an interview for the Up Next series in 2018. “You can say the truth, and you cannot tell anyone that it’s the truth—you can just write it, and it’ll be yours.” Raised and homeschooled in Los Angeles by actor/musician parents, Eilish (born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell in 2001) started writing songs when she was around 11, exploring a strain of melancholy, minimal, and slightly surrealistic pop influenced as much by Lana Del Rey as the radical honesty of rappers like Tyler, The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. Writing and recording with her brother—and producer—FINNEAS at their parents’ house, Eilish released dont smile at me in 2017, graduating directly from her bedroom to the spotlight. Hardly two years later, she’d released the Grammys-slaying WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, an experimental-pop opus exploring mental health and totally upending notions of what constitutes pop music in 2020. (She also won the inaugural Apple Music Award for Global Artist of the Year and performed an Apple Music Live session at London’s O2 Arena in 2022.) Despite the attention, Eilish has done her best to stake out a space of freedom and fluidity, dodging easy definition. Her 2021 album Happier Than Ever saw her chart a further path of self-discovery, after which 2023’s Academy Award-winning ballad “What Was I Made For?” felt downright existential and the 2024 single “LUNCH” openly radiated queer desire. For an artist who has always seemed like she’s whispering closely guarded secrets into our ears, Eilish’s songwriting only seems to be growing more personal. “This is the most ‘me’ thing I’ve ever made,” she told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about 2024’s HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. “And purely me—not a character.” - Apple Music

Biography

In an interview with Apple Music, Kendrick Lamar reflected on his 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly—in particular, the song “Alright.” It wasn’t that it sold well (it did). It wasn’t that it won awards (it did). It wasn’t even that it broke new ground for where hip-hop might go. For Lamar, the success was that people sang it in the streets. “A lot of people don’t have voices out there,” he said. “So to see them actually express themselves through song, through lyrics that I wrote?” For a kid from Compton whose life was transformed by hip-hop, the fame was nice, but the singing, the spirit, the possibility that his music was opening a cultural inroad for people joining the fight for civil rights—that was real. He might’ve been writing alone. But he was speaking for many. Born in 1987, Lamar grew up under the influence of JAY-Z, Eminem, and 2Pac—for the wordplay, for the imagination, for the heart and sense of community. Given its popularity, Lamar’s music can be surprisingly dense, taking shape in winding, album-length narratives (good kid, m.A.A.d city), live-band hybrids of jazz and funk (To Pimp a Butterfly), and quasi-conceptual explorations of self (2017’s Pulitzer Prize–winning DAMN.). Yes, he wants greatness. But he wants it on his own terms. “I’m not doing it to have a good song,” he said. “Or one good rap. Or a good hook, or a good bridge. I want to keep doing it every time, period. And to do it every time you have to challenge yourself, and you have to confirm to yourself—not anybody else—that you’re the best.” Five years after the release of DAMN., Lamar continued his self-administered competition with Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, an album that was as cathartic as it was exhilarating. Cultivated during a time he sought therapy, the release saw the rapper find creativity, controversy, and clarity as he unearthed the dormant trauma beneath his own rap stardom. Inventive and unsparing, the LP gave new dimensionality to an artist and an entire community, proving that, sometimes, the best tests are the ones we give ourselves. - Apple Music

Biography

Teddy Swims’ soaring, sonorous howls defy both gravity and genre. Born Jaten Dimsdale in 1992 (outside Atlanta, GA), the singer-songwriter credits his father for introducing him to Al Green, but his influences have spread far and wide ever since. Before going viral in 2019 with showstopping covers of Michael Jackson and Shania Twain, Dimsdale was tackling alt-rock, hair metal, and soul in four different bands. He had also created the alias Teddy Swims as a hip-hop project. But upon releasing his 2020 major-label debut single, “Picky,” and later his heart-baring 2023 debut album, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) (featuring the scorching hit “Lose Control”), the vocal powerhouse has used that versatility to sculpt his own soul-soaked, country-tinged, pop-conscious style—every bit of it highly emotionally charged. “I end up writing the same feeling down in as many ways and perspectives as I possibly can,” he told Apple Music—adding, with a laugh, “It’s my duty to hurt.” - Apple Music

Biography

When Sleepy Hallow’s “Deep End Freestyle” started catching on social media in early 2020, it seemed like the perfect encapsulation of Brooklyn drill: minimal, melodic, and intense—and at two minutes, the kind of track that begged to be played back-to-back-to-back. Born Tegan Chambers in 1999, Sleepy—alongside frequent collaborator Sheff G, producer Great John, the late Pop Smoke, and others—has emerged as one of the freshest voices in New York hip-hop, providing solid counterprogramming to a landscape still mostly dominated by trap. As a rapper, he’s mercurial but spirited, throwing himself into different flows and rhythmic pockets with an enthusiasm that makes even his most threatening verses light up with a kind of happy mischief (“Tip Toe,” “Baddie Betty Boop”). And though he continues to represent Flatbush and Brooklyn drill, his sound has gotten increasingly diverse, dabbling in Latin pop (“Breakin Bad”), New Agey atmospherics (“Molly”), and guitar ballads (“Weight on Me”)—proof that he can represent his scene without being confined by it. - Apple Music
