So this new part of the forum confuses me slightly as to what its intended purpose is. It seems that anything uploaded to the forum as media (image, video, file) that isn't an embed, goes into some sort of library of attachments I guess in the hope that it's easy to find an attachment if you need to use one again in the future? It doesn't seem to offer much value as a feature as far as I can tell so far, and I'm concerned that this number of attachments could grow significantly for some people in a short space of time and potentially use up valuable server storage.

What are your thoughts? Should all external media types be stored on the server like this for the unlikely future use?

  • Yeah this has been in the back of my mind since the move 😁 Space is fairly cheap these days so no major concerns however might have to put a cap on the file size. For capacity and also for page load.

I actually think this is a very valuable resource. Especially for personal charts it’s a time saver instead of going back and forth between here and Imgur, especially when you can directly upload from device too. I imagine there’s other sections of the forum this would be useful for too even if some don’t make use of it.

And for the WYSIWYG system to display attachments as it does, I imagine the files need to be stored on the server.

It's only the files you actively upload (ie. copy and pasting an image into the editor, or clicking the attachment section at the bottom of each post) - if you copy and paste the URL from Imgur then it remains as an external embed and doesn't upload it. I've already found it useful for finding an attachment I've already used elsewhere on the forum.

Phil will tell us if space is a problem I'm sure, and regardless, if you've uploaded something as an attachment, it's on the server anyway, so whether this feature exists or not won't make much of a difference I expect.

Are certain images in people's signatures not displaying properly for anyone? Seems to be anything on imgur?

Should probably consider ourselves fortunate the attachments feature actually exists now (has always been much more seamless to me tbf!), but what a mess/shame regardless.
