Thank you Severin for the silver score, and Chez and Scene for the points too. Like all the songs I've entered in these retro contests, I've known and enjoyed Dinosaur Jr's cover for years, and while I'm not sure I prefer it to The Cure's wonderful original, it's a cool forerunner to grunge and the guitar work is genius.

  • Well then! That's my fifth win in a song contest on this site and my first in nearly 5 years (since Moaning winning Nuggets XII in May 2020 - previous wins were BJSCs 67 & 74 in 2014/15 and PFSC I

Congratulations Bray - really happy for you to win one of these as I know you haven’t always had good luck in them. The Rachid Taha track was a really interesting take on a classic and I particularly

Jade and Cowtzy's entries are next. The Breath of Life's Cure cover sounding more like The Cure than the original perhaps, whilst Halocene's Metal version of Barbie Girl is a less radical reworking of the source material, if rather amped up. Both Emma Conquest and Rachid Taha get another 12 points each.

This seems an appropriate moment to thank everyone for any points they've given me so far

Ooooh I should already have enough to stay away from the bottom

Thanks for the 10points Cowtzy - and we traded 10 points! (Loved that cover of Barbie Girl)

Haha I also thought this version of 'The Lovecats' sounded more like The Cure than they did themselves!

I couldn't believe it when I stumbled across this hidden gem cover version... it has less than 1k Spotify plays at the moment. Completely fell in love with it wub

Thank you for all the points so far - especially Suedey for top marks cheer

Oh I almost forgot about this... I'm trying to remember which ones I liked haha, only because I remembered them more for the song than the act that performed them - but my gut feel is I liked those ones towards the top

Certainly an accurate description of that cover of 'The Lovecats'! (and sounding more like The Cure can never be a bad thing x)

Scores now from Awardinary, who did send an entry but after it was vetoed they withdrew, which is a shame, and also from dandy* who entered Clubdrugs stab at Portishead. 12 points here go to West End Girls and The Breath of Life.

What was Wardy's vetoed entry?

I don't think I knew the original of dandy*'s entry at all so was somewhat judging it on different criteria than most of the others but it does sound great!

I changed my entry at the very last second... the clubdrugs track came up randomly as an autoplay on a site I accidentally clicked on whilst searching for something else, and it just felt like a sign so I swapped to it - plus I thought it would be cool to send something with so few views

Oh I think I said in my comments to Severin that it amused me that The Breath of Life had done a cover of one of the few distinctive Cure pop tracks and basically made it sound exactly like a typical Cure track

I guess I can say - Oasis doing a cover of Slade's Cum On Feel the Noize. Vetoed as too well known.

The Portishead original is brilliant btw

Yes, I should acknowledge that you did point that out

That version of The Riddle is one of the few covers I listen to as much as the original, I love it a lot, nice entry Dobbo!

Didn't expect to see Sylver on top, but it's a really nice dance version.

I wouldn’t have predicted Sylver to be at the top - it was my 11th place and I liked it more than others but assumed it would fall under the radar for people
