Yes, I know this question is subjective, and no it is not a play on words to find a song with "Ordinary" in the title... it is just a moment to think about a song that went to #1 that was neither good, nor bad, but was just plain, simple and relatively ordinary, and not something you would expect to see at #1 at any time period.

Thoughts?

Oh and I Feel You by Peter Andre. I honestly couldn’t even sing the chorus.

Good example. It's often the ones you forget about and in that example I had to look it up again as I had no recollection of it going to #1 but it did.

it's super subjective but alas...

Maroon 5 - Payphone

Scouting for Girls - This is a love song

Jess Glyne - Don't be so harsh, I'll be there

Lewis Capaldi - Forget me, Wish you the best

Ed Sheeran - Eyes closed, Beautiful people

Beatles - Now an dthen :)

I think any act that had multiple chart toppers would have a few that only got to number 1 because of who they were, rather than the song itself, Westlife being a good example. If I could pick a group I actually like, I would say Heart by the Pet Shop Boys which could be described as ordinary compared to many of their other singles.

This also came into my head! Also agree about some of Westlife's more forgettable number ones

That Gayle song may be polarising but I really don't think you could objectively call it ordinary? It's certainly unique!

I'd suggest this one for being ordinary and uninspired, though I would definately lean more to it being worse than it is better...

This felt really big at the time, but I literally forgot it existed!

And isn't that the basis for something that is ordinary? Something rather forgettable?

such a pedestrian rap song that somehow was a lot bigger than the masses of other similar sounding material

Would have to pick one by an artist who isn't very remarkable e.g not a huge name and the song itself doesn't have any kind of gimmick/cultural impact. Going back to the 80s I would say "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene would be one of those, never heard of it before I got interested in the charts

Oh this is interesting!

One that come to mind for me was the Ozzy / Kelly Osbourne - Changes 😆

I’m a fan of her as well but Rita’s How We Do is kinda just there and she has way better tracks what deserved #1 status.

Roll Deeps Green Light as well is another track I’d say fits this!

Girls Aloud and Sugababes are both iconic but their joint #1 was a complete non event (although it was for charity)

All this is subjective though I’m avoiding using songs I actively dislike here as at least they make me feel… something!
