Posted May 7May 7 Yes, I know this question is subjective, and no it is not a play on words to find a song with "Ordinary" in the title... it is just a moment to think about a song that went to #1 that was neither good, nor bad, but was just plain, simple and relatively ordinary, and not something you would expect to see at #1 at any time period.Thoughts?

May 7May 7 it's super subjective but alas...Maroon 5 - PayphoneScouting for Girls - This is a love songJess Glyne - Don't be so harsh, I'll be thereLewis Capaldi - Forget me, Wish you the bestEd Sheeran - Eyes closed, Beautiful peopleBeatles - Now an dthen :)
May 7May 7 I think any act that had multiple chart toppers would have a few that only got to number 1 because of who they were, rather than the song itself, Westlife being a good example. If I could pick a group I actually like, I would say Heart by the Pet Shop Boys which could be described as ordinary compared to many of their other singles.

May 7May 7 Author I'd suggest this one for being ordinary and uninspired, though I would definately lean more to it being worse than it is better...
May 7May 7 That Gayle song may be polarising but I really don't think you could objectively call it ordinary? It's certainly unique!

May 7May 7 that Lemonade song by a bunch of B-list American rappers that lucked its way to #1 with low sales/ACR is a strong contender in recent timessuch a pedestrian rap song that somehow was a lot bigger than the masses of other similar sounding material
May 7May 7 Would have to pick one by an artist who isn't very remarkable e.g not a huge name and the song itself doesn't have any kind of gimmick/cultural impact. Going back to the 80s I would say "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene would be one of those, never heard of it before I got interested in the charts
May 7May 7 Oh this is interesting! One that come to mind for me was the Ozzy / Kelly Osbourne - Changes 😆I’m a fan of her as well but Rita’s How We Do is kinda just there and she has way better tracks what deserved #1 status. Roll Deeps Green Light as well is another track I’d say fits this!Girls Aloud and Sugababes are both iconic but their joint #1 was a complete non event (although it was for charity)All this is subjective though I’m avoiding using songs I actively dislike here as at least they make me feel… something!
