Nice to see lots of youngsters at the barrier there. We noticed how many men there were in the audience last Saturday - way more than 20 years ago

Robbie Williams at the Palacio de los Deportes: the live 'Britpop' of the last great showman arrived

image.png

Robbie Williams played his first night at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City: Photo: César Vicuña for OCESA.

Robbie Williams had 20 years without giving a solo headline show in Mexico City, and although he visited us for the Corona Capital 2018 and the Tecate Emblema 2023, we had not been able to get rid of the thorn of him dedicating a night exclusively to review his career. That changed today, with the first of two Sports Palaces sold out.

In the first of two sold-out dates at the Palacio de los Deportes, Robbie gave a show of an absolute showman, pioneer of the great shows of global pop and an intimate night, confessing in front of his fans and showing the redemption and maturity of a giant of music.

This time, the pretext was to present his album Britpop, but the result went much further: the masterful demonstration of an artist who challenges the industry and consolidates himself as the definitive showman of our era.

After 9:00 p.m., Robbie came out to eat the stage with "Let Me Entertain You," setting the tone for a powerful 20-song setlist. Seeing him live is to reiterate that Harry Styles or the Weeknd can only learn from this veteran who does not get tired and interacts more with his fans live.

"Good night Mexico, are you ready to get crazy?" he shouted with irreverence intact. During the night, the Briton showed why our country is number one in its streaming statistics; he got off the stage from the third song to sing among the people, let himself be hugged by the fans and give a fist bump with security.

He played with the camera at all times and was not lacking in his characteristic humor, joking about having seen a 90s lover called Miguel in the audience or ironizing about the fact that no one would have imagined that Robbie could have "four children with the same woman".

n an era dominated by tracks, it is worthy of applause that Robbie bets on 100% live music. Leading an ensemble of 16 musicians on stage — which included a trio of brass, guitars, bass, keyboards and four energetic backing vocalists — the sound was impeccable. His voice only seems to get better with the years, shining both on acoustic solemnities like "My Way" and on virtuoso improvisation jams during "Rock DJ."

The songs from her Britpop era fit perfectly, supported by mind-blowing visuals full of psychedelia, vibrant colors and references to England.

The night was also full of eclectic surprises, from a shower of T-shirts thrown by his backup singers, a quirky duet on "Better Man" with Omar Chaparro, to a massive medley that included classics from Oasis, Depeche Mode and The White Stripes, and even a contest to see if people knew his songs like "Candy" or "Tripping" with Thom Rylance of The Lottery Winners.

Beyond the party, the dynamics of the concert shone for its emotional changes. Robbie feels every word of what he sings and takes the time to contextualize tracks like "Feel," "Rock DJ," and "Angels." On the verge of tears, and echoing what was seen in his recent film/documentary (whose visuals accompanied the show), he spoke openly about his mental health, his battles overcome and confessed the anguish of seeing his father deteriorate due to Parkinson's.

"There are nights when I ask myself: do I still have it? Are my best days behind me?" he confessed into the microphone. The deafening response from the public confirmed that its validity continues. Deeply intimate moments capped the evening: the dedication of "She's the One" to a fan named Leyla and the emotional introduction of her own children during "My Way."

As Robbie himself repeated throughout the night in Spanish: "This is a love letter to the entertainer." And without a doubt, this concert was his definitive love letter to the stages and to his Mexican fans.

We tell you all about his show.

Robbie Williams in Mexico: A Love Letter to the "Entertainer"

For this visit, the pretext was to present his album Britpop, but the result went much further: the masterful demonstration of an artist who challenges the industry and consolidates himself as the definitive showman of our era. One of those that no longer exists.

After 9:00 p.m., Robbie came out to eat the stage with "Let Me Entertain You," setting the tone for a powerful 20-song setlist. To see him live is to reiterate that current showmen, such as Harry Styles or the Weeknd, can only learn from this veteran who does not get tired, gets into the crowd, and does a confessional work that feels like having coffee with an old friend.

"Good night Mexico, are you ready to get loco?" he shouted with the irreverence of his youth intact. During the night, the Briton showed why our country is number one in its streaming statistics (data that he gave us); he got off the stage from the third song to sing among the people, let himself be hugged by the fans and even fist bump with security, in a party in which everyone participated

Robbie played with the camera at all times and was not lacking in his characteristic humor, joking about having seen a 90s lover called Miguel in the audience or ironizing about the fact that no one would have imagined that the nineties Robbie could have "four children with the same woman".

An organic musical show without clues

In an era dominated by tracks, it is worthy of applause that Robbie bets on 100% live music. Leading an ensemble of 16 musicians on stage — which included a trio of brass, guitars, bass, keyboards and four brutal backing vocalists — the sound was impeccable. His voice only seems to get better with the years, shining both on acoustic solemnities like "My Way" and on virtuoso improvisation jams during "Rock DJ."

The songs from his Britpop stage ("Rocket" and "Pretty Face") fit perfectly, and they are songs that sounded for the first time in our country, and that Robbie feels very much, he dedicated "Pretty Face" to his wife Ayda Field.

The mind-blowing visuals throughout the night were filled with psychedelia, vibrant colors, and references to England. The visuals of his film make us speculate about this trend, since it is something very much like the lore of an artist, and we saw the same thing last weekend with Elton John.

image.png

The night was also full of eclectic surprises, from a shower of T-shirts thrown by his backup singers, a quirky duet on "Better Man" with Omar Chaparro, to a massive medley that included classics from Oasis, Depeche Mode and The White Stripes, and even a contest to see if people knew his songs like "Candy" or "Tripping" with Thom Rylance of The Lottery Winners.

Vulnerability and catharsis of an inexhaustible RObbie

Beyond the party, the dynamics of the concert shone for its emotional changes. Robbie feels every word of what he sings and takes the time to contextualize tracks like "Feel," "Rock DJ," and "Angels." On the verge of tears, and echoing what was seen in his recent film and spoke openly about his mental health, his battles overcome and confessed the anguish of seeing his father deteriorate due to Parkinson's.

There was humor, complicity and moments of vulnerability in her show / Photo: Irais Sánchez / Diario de Querétaro

Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries announced that the wait was over. The rising and galloping sound of the piece broke the silence and, suddenly, Robbie Williams appeared at the Autodromo de Querétaro dressed in a red sports suit with sequins, ready to do what he does best: entertain.

For hours, many of her fans had waited to get a good spot at a festival with three stages and simultaneous music. The reward came as soon as the Briton began to sing: "Come on, let me entertain you, let me entertain you", and the audience responded with a collective howl.

"Are you ready to be entertained? I shouldn't say this, but I saw a person I slept with in the 90s right there tonight. I almost don't recognize her because she has a beard now," she joked, while pointing to a man among the attendees, whose image appeared on the giant screens.

Humor and complicity were part of the show. Robbie Williams broke the fourth wall repeatedly and turned his fans into protagonists between songs. He asked them for help translating a few words into Spanish and tested their fanaticism to see how much they knew about his music.

He also chose a young woman in the audience to dedicate She's the One to her. The scene unleashed the illusion of those who, from their places, also wanted to become "the one" for the British star.

The repertoire included Rocket, a song he released this year in collaboration with Tony Iommi, legend of Black Sabbath, and which is part of Britpop (2026), the album that gives its name to his new tour. It is the album that Robbie Williams would have wanted to make after his departure from Take That, the boyband that marked his early career.

On stage, a group of dancers accompanied the singer in songs such as Rock DJ, while classics such as Better Man gave rise to one of the most personal stories of the night: that of his biographical film, in which he is portrayed as an anthropomorphic chimpanzee. The choice, he has said in several interviews, responds to the fact that "he has always felt less evolved than other people".

The film was also present among the attendees. Some fans wore masks inspired by the character, a wink that the singer did not let go unnoticed.

But between the jokes and the choreographed movements there was room for vulnerability. Robbie Williams spoke of his wife and four children, to whom he attributed a fundamental role in his life. With their "giant little hands and hearts... they saved my life," she said when recalling the stage in which she stepped away from the stage to deal with depression, anxiety and addictions.

The night continued with versions of Hey Jude, by The Beatles; Wonderwall, by Oasis, and We Are the Champions, by Queen. However, it was his own anthems that ended up igniting the audience: Strong, Feel, Come Undone and Angels, songs that when sung in chorus by thousands of fans, confirmed that the artist is still "the king of Britpop".

Robbie Williams headlined this year's lineup of Pulso GNP, an edition that also marked Travis' first visit to Querétaro and featured, for the second time, the presence of Caifanes and La Gusana Ciega.

In this seventh edition, more than 30 thousand people enjoyed a day that brought together Fobia, Los Claxons, DLD and José Madero, along with new proposals from the national scene, including Bruses, Kevin Kaarl, Kevis & Maykky, La Texana, Malcriada, NSQK and Orqueska. Local talent was represented by Electrify, the only band from Querétaro included in the lineup.

Universal Pixels has developd A, B and C rig configurations for the tour, allowing the video package to scale according to venue, while bringing the singer closer to audience members.

Universal Pixels is supporting Robbie Williams’ Britpop tour with a flexible video package designed for maximum audience engagement across a run of festivals, arenas and stadiums.

The touring production has been developed to adapt to different venue formats, stages and turnaround times, while maintaining a clear creative vision to bring the singer’s performance closer to every member of the audience.

The video package combines Panasonic UC4000 long-lens cameras at front of house, and around the stage and pit. Remotely operated Panasonic UE150 PTZ cameras provide additional angles without intruding on the performance, with one mounted on a Polecam AutoPod to add vertical movement to the mix.

Video director Jon Shrimpton, who has worked with the singer for more than a decade, says that relationship with the cameras is fundamental. “There’s no one who does it better,” he says.

“Robbie makes people at the back feel like they’re having a direct interaction with him. The key thing is always to make sure that the audience sees the glisten in the eye, the facial expressions and the cheeky little winks.”

Live camera feeds form the basis of much of the screen output, with Disguise GX3 media servers handling real-time Notch effects. Brompton Technology LED processing, meanwhile, drives the ROE Visual Vanish V8T screen system.

Universal Pixels, which has been working with Williams since 2016, has developed A, B and C rig configurations for the tour, allowing the video package to scale according to the requirements of each show.

Festival dates use adaptable LED configurations, while standalone arena and stadium shows allow the production to deploy a larger version of the design. The Zurich arena dates also introduced projection image magnification due to the venue’s weight-loading capacity.

Universal Pixels project manager Hamanshu ‘Hammy’ Patel says the main challenge has been managing those different requirements across the touring schedule.

“The most challenging thing about this year hasn’t necessarily been the tech – it’s been the logistics,” he says. “It’s festival touring. The show has hopped from one city to another, and some are so back to back that physically getting the kit there is the challenge.”

That has required close coordination between Patel, production manager Dan Kent and Universal Pixels’ crew chief Pete Tilling to find the right technical and logistical solution for each leg of the tour. The result is a video system that can change substantially from one date to the next, while remaining familiar to the touring crew.

“The video was probably the trickiest thing to redesign,” says Kent, who explains that the value of the relationship with Universal Pixels is particularly evident when requirements change at short notice.

“You don’t need to over-communicate as they already know half of it,” he says. “We phone up Hammy and say ‘we need B-rig servers and we need them here in a couple of weeks’, without having to go through all of the explaining, and they just deal with it. It’s great.”

Between hits, jokes and confessions, Robbie Williams conquers São Paulo

After two decades away from the Brazilian stage, the singer transformed a rainy Tuesday into a celebration marked by humor, nostalgia and connection with the public.

It was 20 years of waiting until Robbie Williams met again with the Brazilian public. But it only took a few minutes for the singer to show that the time away from the country had not diminished his charisma. With an irreverent performance and a repertoire full of hits, the British transformed Nubank Parque, in São Paulo, into a great celebration of pop.

Even in front of thousands of people, Robbie Williams conducted the show with the naturalness of someone who talks to old acquaintances. Between jokes, personal stories and provocations, he created a closeness with the audience that became one of the most striking features of the night.

The choice of Let Me Entertain You to open the performance could not have been more appropriate. Right from the first chords, the audience responded with screams, jumps and a chorus that made clear the atmosphere of the reunion. The message was given: this would be a night to have fun.

Throughout the performance, Robbie Williams showed that his talent goes far beyond the interpretation of great hits. The singer spent much of the show talking to the audience, sharing stories about his family, career and situations in his personal life.

With hilarious tirades and a spontaneity that is difficult to reproduce, the show gained, at various times, the atmosphere of an intimate stand-up. It was as if the artist was telling stories to a group of friends, even in front of a crowded stadium.

The connection was so natural that, after only 20 minutes, I found myself thinking: I wanted to be friends with this guy.

And this is perhaps one of Robbie Williams' greatest qualities as an artist. It manages to turn the size of a presentation into something secondary, making each interaction feel close and personal.

The repertoire covered different moments in the singer's career, alternating dance songs with more emotional passages.

Rock DJ was one of the great highlights of the night. The track put Nubank Parque to dance and showed the strength of a hit that continues to work as an immediate invitation to the party.

Better Man, on the other hand, brought a different atmosphere. With images from his biopic Better Man shown on the big screens, the song gained even greater emotional weight. The audience followed the presentation singing from start to finish, in one of the most beautiful moments of the show.

This alternation between euphoria and emotion helped to give rhythm to the show. Robbie Williams moved between humor and vulnerability without losing control of the performance, showing how well he knows his own repertoire and the response of his fans.

One of the most particular moments of the night happened with Sexed Up.

Commenting that the song had been part of Brazilian television, Robbie Williams recognized the public's connection with the track and decided to present it in full.

The choice revealed an important aspect of the show: the singer's willingness to listen to the audience and adapt the experience to what was happening in front of him.

The conversations also yielded other curious moments. At one point, the Briton joked about never having been invited to Rock in Rio and commented that, during a performance in Peru, the audience did not know one of the songs that Brazilians sang at the top of their lungs.

And, showing that a Robbie Williams at peace does not want war with anyone, he still found room for a version of Wonderwall, a classic by Oasis, a band with which he had disagreements in the past.

Between one provocation and another, the singer seemed to have as much fun as the audience.

Throughout the performance, Robbie Williams made people laugh, dance and move. His mastery of the stage appeared both in the big hits and in the small interactions, which helped build the personality of the show.

On a rainy Tuesday, the singer found an audience willing to celebrate his return and responded with a performance that mixed nostalgia, good humor and moments of emotion.

Two decades after his last visit to Brazil, Robbie Williams has shown that he continues to master one of the most difficult skills for an artist: making thousands of people feel part of the same conversation.

And that night, São Paulo was accompanied by an Englishman who seemed determined to turn every minute into entertainment.
