Another week, another album not reaching a random sales figure plucked out of nowhere.

Solar Power opened with 12,187, and this is on more by the Monday mids.

Yeah you said the same last week and most other people thought the same as I did about Benson’s numbers. 13k is a pretty low number for a big artist doing well in my book.

I don't understand comparing artists' sales to anything other than their previous work, and any general market trend. What would make Lorde suddenly be selling significantly more than Solar Power? Bearing in mind it's already doing better. Suddenly expecting a significantly higher figure is unrealistic and not actually based on anything.

Honestly what are you talking about. Benson had very low numbers, everybody knew this except you who’s criteria is just about the last album which is silly. Artists can be much bigger or smaller, have better singles, have no physicals or have some there can be a million reasons. The market can be up or down. Anyway it’s not even that deep with the Lorde number I just personally expected 20k so it was less than I expected which is why I said it. It was just you who brought up last week which is odd when you were the one miles out of touch.

I mean, this wasn't really about Benson's numbers, although that does highlight the pattern of unrealistically high expectations so that artists can be painted as underperforming. There's categorically no need to be so personally rude towards me and I don't appreciate your tone - take it down a notch.

I agree that context can help sway things! Lorde's new album is available on CD, the last one was not. What Was That was a bigger lead single than Solar Power, albeit still not exactly massive. These are likely contributing to its stronger sales, which it's achieved. It's just confusing to me that it could be painted as an underperformance but you do you I guess.

But hey, if I'm miles out of touch and Benson selling 2.5x more in his first week with this album than his last one is really "very low" then I'm sure we'll be hearing of his record contract being terminated any day now.

Capaldi will revert to some dubious tactics to get that #1.

Or it could just be a good comeback song (one of his best imo and I’m a big fan). Still don’t understand the dislike that talented male artists with heartfelt songs get on here

Exactly. I think the background behind how much he was struggling mentally and went away to get the help he needed to comeback better with a very strong single IMO is remarkable and full credit to him, but haters always gonna hate

Seriously read what you have written and just think about how it sounds, both in "factual" information and rudeness.

I would die if Lorde finally got a number one album x

We'll get your coffin sized up then x

Lorde and Lewis, the L's have it in the bag this week.

I feel very very guilty about hating Lewis' music. He's a great, funny guy and possibly the nicest person to ever top our charts (I will very likely be flooded with other names now). I hope he's doing well and his return is touching but I just can't stand his music for the life of me, I find it completely unlistenable

I'm largely a fan of Lewis! I was aware of him about a year before he blew up (Lost on You was a top 10 hit in my chart in December 2017), and I've always had a massive soft spot for Someone You Loved, even through the overplay. I've seen him live twice too!

The second album lost me a bit as it felt like more of the same, and I can understand why people don't enjoy his vocals as they can veer towards shouty at times. I can absolutely hear why Survive is resonating though - not sure it's one I'll be replaying much but it at least feels like something slightly different to his previous hits (totally get the Snow Patrol comparison).

The Giver is back on SCR!

Even if it was its hardly streaming so those sales wouldn't make much difference

Delighted for Lorde as the number 1 is pretty much guaranteed now based on the sales we have.

Rod Stewart on much lower sales than i was expecting as i was expecting him to be nearer Lordes sales but he has already had a few successful greatest hits releases.

Serious question this isn't a pop at alex

But has anyone other than him been successful by you your criteria this year @Liam Sota ? Im just really curious now

Also I can take or leave lewis when he not overplayed I enjoy his music when he is i dont but thats not really his fault
