From the OCC

Glam rock legends Slade have announced they're to play their final UK shows ever next month - and the dates just so happens to coincide with this year's Official Christmas Number 1 race.

The band, known for their iconic 1973 Christmas chart-topper Merry Xmas Everybody, will kick off their farewell tour in Liverpool's O2 Academy on Friday December 12, the very day the starting pistol for 2025's Christmas Number 1 race is triggered.

Could the news see Merry Xmas Everybody return to the top 52 years after it first claimed the coveted prize?

  • scenes when Alexa gets Kylie a Christmas #1 and Buzzjack doesn't know whether to get excited cos it's Kylie or annoyed cos it's Alexa and the song wouldn't be top 10 on a level playing field

  • Turns out the Kylie physicals ARE released on Christmas week (12th December for 19th December chart). Go on Kylie stans, do your best.

  • We need some sausage rolls I think.

^ I'm team Slade this year! I know it already had its #1 moment in the 70s but I'd definitely be behind it getting there again this year. That's a very cleverly timed farewell tour for them. Ideally they finish the tour in their home city of Birmingham on the day the Christmas chart is announced!

Kylie getting Christmas #1 would be SUCH a moment. Unlike the pop princess herself though, it's a very very tall order.

Just spotted how high Kylie X M A S is for Amazon.

#4 on their main Christmas Hits playlist

#1 on Christmas Present

#1 on Merry Mix ahead of Mariah

#1 on Christmas Party

#3 on Feel Good Christmas

#1 on Amazon Originals

Gwen Stefani’s new Christmas song is also being pushed but is a long way behind.

And… last time I tried to choose a song to play on Amazon Prime, it wouldn’t play my choice - but today it is happy to play Kylie XMAS on repeat.

Might not be as much as we think it is, Sam Ryder came really quite close in the same circumstances and we have 3 physical formats which we know Kylie's fanbase lap up.

I'll allow it, its not exactly gonna clogging the chart every year either Ellie Goulding says hi

Ok - just tried the Amazon Christmas ‘station’ and the track it is pushing is Gwen Stefani - not Mariah, Wham! or Kylie.

So both Kylie and Gwen possibly coming for their highest charting Christmas song to date.

Surely there’s zero chance of Slade’s farewell tour suddenly making theirs the most streamed Christmas song. We saw how modest the impact of Shane dying was on The Pogues.

Wham! not getting Christmas #1 would be good though. If it has to be Kylexa then why not.

Many people who know me know that a Kylie/Wham! 1/2 would send me into a frenzy! My office is like a shrine to Kylie and Wham! 🤣🤣🤣

Absolutely - and for most people, Slade ended in 1992 when Noddy Holder & Jim Lea left.

Tbf a huge chunk listening these days will be listeming because of playlists or alexa play christmas music and won't be because of backstage politics etc

In terms of Amazon, I've not seen the list yet but don't they usually primarily plug a British act in the UK?

I think Kylie is representing that this year - Gwen Stefani seems to be the US choice.

Usually but Kylie does have dual citizenship in both the UK and Australia plus we basically adopted her

There are currently 4 being given prominent places on playlists:

Kylie

Gwen Stefani

Vanessa Mai

Mariah the Scientist

Kylie is the cover artist for two playlists and is definitely (currently) the one being pushed. She has dual nationality (she has a UK passport I believe) and is an artist who musically is based in the UK (even if she has now moved back to Australia).

There are several lesser tracks too. But no British artists YET (excluding Kylie).

The question is: if there are tracks by British artists later, will they take precedent over the two tracks currently being pushed (Kylie and Gwen)?

I very much doubt it, Kylie seems to be the focus act with the physicals & playlist positions.
