U is for Up.

Both Shania Twain and The Saturdays released a single titled 'Up' during the 00s, one perhaps more remembered than the other(?).. Shania's 'Up' came in the form of a feel-good singalong country bop and was the final single lifted from her album of the same name. Released as an A-side alongside 'When You Kiss Me', it reached #21 in the UK and (Greatest Hits era aside) marked the end of Shania's chart success.

Five years later and then-emerging British five-piece The Saturdays released their electropop 'Up' as the follow-up to debut hit 'If This Is Love'. After "only" landing at #8 with their debut, the second single was a crucial make-or-break moment for them. Fortunately, 'Up' was a HIT, managing to break them into the top 5 for the first time, and actually had longevity in the charts iirc.

But which is your favourite 'Up'?

I love Shania but The Saturdays Up is an absolute late 00’s pop gem for me. So that gets my vote.

I've never understood what the deal was with putting that version on the album. Was it some kind of ploy to try and make people buy the single when it's not what they expected?

I've never understood what the deal was with putting that version on the album. Was it some kind of ploy to try and make people buy the single when it's not what they expected?

Was a bit of a mystery to me too, I wonder if the album was sent to production before the single mix was finished?

I'm glad they didn't release that version as the single as I think it would have been a top 10 scrape and quickly out and left them in a vulnerable position.
