Biography

British singer and guitarist Chris Rea enjoyed a run of popularity in Europe during the late '80s and early '90s after almost a decade of recording. Rea started out performing with a local group called Magdalene, taking David Coverdale's place; the band won a national talent contest in 1975 as the Beautiful Losers, but still failed to get a record contract. Rea left the band and recorded the album Whatever Happened to Benny Santini? (an allusion to a discarded stage name), which went gold on the strength of the U.S. Top 20 hit "Fool (If You Think It's Over)." Rea was not heard from again in the U.S. for some time, concentrating his efforts on his main fan base in Europe. A compilation of tracks from Rea's '80s albums, New Light Through Old Windows, was released in 1988 and sold well in the U.K. and Europe and charted in the U.S. Rea followed it up with the critically acclaimed The Road to Hell, which many regarded as his best album. The Road to Hell and its follow-up, Auberge, went to the top of the U.K. album charts, but did not prove as successful in the U.S., where he has failed to chart with his subsequent releases. He released his most ambitious project in 2005, an 11-album, 130-track box set of all new material inspired by the blues and his own paintings called Blue Guitars. The fun The Return of the Fabulous Hofner Blue Notes appeared in 2008. - Spotify

Biography

Singer/songwriter Olivia Dean crafts poignant ballads and warm pop anthems, showcasing a deep sense of self-awareness. Born in 1999 in Enfield and raised in Walthamstow, Dean participated in gospel choir at a young age, before busking in the streets and eventually attending the famous BRIT School. Influenced by Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and Carole King, Dean’s own take on music is autobiographical and vulnerable. In 2019, she released her debut EP, Ok Love You Bye, which delved into the challenging aspects of dating, like on the meditative “Password Change”. The following year, Dean dropped her follow-up EP, What Am I Gonna Do On Sundays?, a concise but evocative set of songs brimming with celestial melodies and confessional lyrics. Dean’s signature introspective style continues to grow more intimate, as evinced by the delicate 2021 EP Growth, highlighted by the soul-baring single “Be My Own Boyfriend”. - Apple Music

Biography

It didn’t take long for Michael Bublé to start getting the Sinatra comparisons. And in some ways, they made sense: Like Sinatra, Bublé was an old-fashioned entertainer, the kind of singer who weighed his success in part by how well he connected with the crowd. But where Sinatra exuded swagger and masculinity, Bublé was soft and humble, a fisherman’s son from British Columbia who could swing if he wanted but tended more toward ballads and delicate adult-contemporary pop. Did the ladies love him? Of course! He’s Michael Bublé. He might be carrying a torch, but he’s lighting his own way. Born in 1975 in Burnaby, just east of Vancouver, Bublé fell in love with jazz and standards after being turned on by his grandfather, an Italian-born plumber who later offered his services to clubs to fix their pipes in exchange for putting a teenage Bublé onstage. As his star grew, his range broadened, balancing straight takes on classics like “Stardust” and “All of Me” with polished contemporary pop (“Home,” “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and “Nobody But Me”), creating a sound that was immediate, romantic, elevated but accessible. And like his heroes (not just Sinatra, but Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, and a generation of American entertainers), Bublé got his Christmas album (2011’s Christmas) and a string of TV specials (buble!). In 2013, he gave an impromptu a cappella performance in the New York City subway. That, he said, is when you know you’ve made it. A stretch, but if his voice doesn’t get you, his charm will. - Apple Music

Biography

With her enchanting howl of a voice and passion for outrageous creative risk, Kate Bush strikes an uncanny balance between artistic experimentation and pop satisfaction. In a career that goes back to the late ’70s, she’s produced hits like “This Woman’s Work,” “Babooshka,” and “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” alongside esoteric song cycles and conceptual works, inspiring artists as diverse as St. Vincent and Big Boi with her wonderfully witchy distillation of literary themes, musical idioms, and studio innovations. Born Catherine Bush in July 1958 in Kent, England, she grew up in a village farmhouse with an ever-supportive Roman Catholic family. Her two older brothers, John and Paddy, were her earliest collaborators; her big break came at age 16 when Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour helped her produce a demo tape and land a record deal. She was a sensation from the start with her Emily Brontë-inspired 1978 debut single, “Wuthering Heights,” summoning raw desire with her piercing soprano and the video's interpretive dance moves. She went on to produce a string of acclaimed albums throughout the ’80s and into the ’90s—including 1985’s masterful Hounds of Love, which veers between synth-pop, piano balladry, Irish folk, and earthy lyricism. Bush has been quieter in more recent years, releasing just three albums in the 2000s and 2010s. But her visionary work helped make way for the post-genre pop of artists like Lorde and Billie Eilish, while her artistic autonomy sets an important standard for the music industry. - Apple Music

pleased to see Chris Rea still doing reasonably well despite the growing Americanisation of Christmas

not so much excited for the Sir Starmer and the Granny Harmers parody version of it probably charting on Xmas week manson

Great to have Kate Bush back in the chart - the oldest female solo artist to top the UK charts.
