Oops was a bit zoned out and thought that intro was 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' at first lol I remember having the reverse experience when that first came out!

Biography

The Police covered an impressive amount of sonic ground during their initial seven-year run as a band. In the process, the trio—former teacher Gordon “Sting” Sumner, onetime Curved Air drummer Stewart Copeland, and veteran guitarist Andy Summers—proved that commercial rock music could be both ambitious and accessible. After forming in London, The Police debuted in 1978 with Outlandos d’Amour, a punk- and reggae-influenced LP with a melodic pop core that yielded the New Wave classic “Roxanne.” The band used that album and its signifiers—Sting’s keening yelp and live-wire basslines, Copeland’s intricate backbeats, and Summers’ slashing riffs—as a jumping-off point for experimentation; on subsequent LPs, the group explored laidback dub (“Walking On the Moon”), lively jazz-rock (“Driven to Tears”), and moody, grayscale synth-rock (“Invisible Sun”). These panoramic creative visions coalesced on 1983’s multiplatinum smash Synchronicity, a sophisticated rock album with tasteful synth flourishes and the obsession-focused No. 1 hit “Every Breath You Take.” (That song would be sampled by Puff Daddy on his 1997 hit with Faith Evans and 112, “I’ll Be Missing You,” giving The Police hip-hop cred.) After going on a break in 1984, The Police resurfaced in 1986 for several Amnesty International benefit concerts and then reunited for a proper large-scale reunion tour in 2007 and 2008 before splitting up once again. The band’s genre-blending rock approach lives on today via bands such as Vampire Weekend—and Sting himself still switches up Police songs live during his solo gigs. - Apple Music

Biography

Looking back at her breakthrough successes in the early 2000s, pop singer Natasha Bedingfield knows exactly why her music connected on such a massive scale. As she tells Apple Music, “It had this innocent positivity that comes from real-life situations and sometimes a lot of pain—but going through that and being uplifted.” Born in 1981, the West Sussex native comes by that inspirational power honestly: Among her pre-fame pursuits was writing and singing for the London branch of the Hillsong contemporary-worship empire. But with its shimmering fusion of Alanis’ edgy alt-pop and Lauryn Hill’s empowering R&B, Bedingfield’s 2004 solo debut, Unwritten, refashioned her as secular crossover star, albeit one whose catwalk-ready swagger was undercut by a self-effacing relatability. On her first UK No. 1 hit, “These Words,” she demystifies her own songwriting process in a manner that suggests you should try it too, while the album's dew-sparkled titled track is a rapturous ode to tapping your inner creativity (a message that got somewhat clouded when it became the theme song to MTV’s posh-kid hate-watch The Hills). Bedingfield continued to radiate positivity throughout the decade, via upbeat funky bops like “I Wanna Have Your Babies” and 2008’s self-explanatory “Pocketful of Sunshine.” After taking an extended hiatus—marked by one-off collaborations, TV gigs, and new motherhood—Bedingfield resurfaced with 2019’s Linda Perry-produced Roll With Me, which saw the singer coloring her motivational stories with an expanded musical palette of Caribbean rhythms and old-school ‘60s soul. “When you write a hit song, you can easily get caught in a trap where you’re trying to write songs that everyone will like,” Bedingfield tells Apple Music. “But we’re all in our own lane and we all have to evolve and grow.” - Apple Music

I don't need to hear this yet again.

Now that number 84 is on, remember in spring 2024 when, on the back of it's use in the Will Gluck film Anyone But You, it recharted and Jack Saunders just had to do the deed of calling it the national anthem of the chart show at the time...

Biography

Born in 1990 in the small Irish town of Bray, Andrew John Hozier-Byrne—better known as Hozier—was first heard in the company of others, contributing his preternaturally powerful voice to Ireland’s renowned Trinity Orchestra and choral troupe Anúna. But where those early pursuits immersed him in his country’s rich musical traditions, his first single as a solo artist took aim at its most formidable institution. Few debut tracks come out swinging as hard as “Take Me to Church”, a doomy anti-gospel sermon that sets its crosshairs on the hectoring and hypocrisies of the Catholic Church, delivered in a commanding, corrupted-choir-boy voice imbued with equal doses of grace and grit. That striking single topped charts worldwide and scored Hozier a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year. Still, the self-titled debut album it introduced also showcased a singer-songwriter with a deft command of sweet soulful rockers (“Someone New”) and dreamy folk reveries (“Like Real People Do”). The dichotomy between rage and romanticism would only become more pronounced on 2019’s Wasteland Baby!, where some of Hozier’s prettiest performances to date (like the delicate finger-picked hymn “Shrike”) rub up against the righteous fury of “Nina Cried Power”, a spirited, Mavis Staples-assisted protest anthem that took him back to church to further rattle the steeple. The flames of protest burned on with “Swan Upon Leda”, a stirring prayer for women’s rights inspired by Egyptian feminist Mona Eltahawy and the Mahsa Amini protests in Iran. But all roads ultimately lead back home, and Hozier's next album, Unreal Unearth, centred Irish folklore and language across sprawling, searing tracks “Butchered Tongue” and “Eat Your Young”, collaged together with motifs from Dante's Inferno. In 2024, Hozier reminded fans that for every solemn paean, he can still pen a grizzled, hip-swivelling earworm, this time in the form of “Too Sweet”, a bluesy sinner's anthem that raced up the charts and proved his earlier successes were no mere miracle. - Apple Music

Biography

Thirty-plus years in the business, more No. 1 singles than any solo artist in history (and second overall only to The Beatles), more writing and production credits on those singles than any other female composer—Mariah Carey is one of the few artists whose songs legitimately bridge the confessional intimacy of singer-songwriters with the mass appeal of pop. Carey grew up on the classics: Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight. She moved to New York City after high school, cobbling together jobs while working on demos with then-collaborator Ben Margulies at the back of Margulies’ father’s cabinet factory. Her biggest tracks—from the early, dance- and gospel-influenced “Someday” and “Dreamlover” to the club leanings of “Fantasy” and “Honey” to ballads such as “Forever” and “Always Be My Baby” to the ultimate holiday pop song “All I Want for Christmas Is You"—stand like mile markers in the culture. And her guest turn on 2022’s remix of Latto’s “Big Energy” (which interpolates Mariah's “Fantasy”) is further testament to her continued relevance. She captures a feeling of sweetness and euphoria that straddles pop, hip-hop, and R&B without slotting neatly into any of them. Meanwhile, her melismatic style—a technique that entails singing a single syllable with a long run of notes—redefined our sense of what pop vocals sound like. Mimi, The Elusive Chanteuse, The Imperfect Angel...or maybe just Mariah. - Apple Music

Biography

Born in 1993, London-based songwriter and producer Frederick John Philip Gibson treats his electro- and rave-inspired songs as diary entries. But the artist, who performs under the name Fred again.., doesn’t limit the subject matter to himself. On albums like 2021’s Actual Life (April 14 - December 17 2020) and Actual Life 2 (February 2 - October 15 2021), Fred invited his friends into the studio to record their personal stories and then sprinkled them throughout the album. The obvious exception was an epic Kodak Black sample on “Kahan (Last Year).” The songwriter has also worked with stars such as Eminem and Ed Sheeran; in 2023, he teamed up with ambient godfather Brian Eno to create the contemplative, uplifting Secret Life, a partnership that Eno called “a two-way relationship.” Fred’s longest collaboration is with his brothers, whom he shares his tracks with before they’re released. “It’s such a blessing to work with both of my brothers,” Fred explained in an interview with Apple Music. “I’ll spend hours and hours working on a tune, and they’ll hear it how I will, but without all the baggage. They bring a fresh ear.” On stage, he’s become closely associated with two beloved brothers from different mothers: Skrillex and Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden. Following a surprise booking at Coachella 2023, the three pals became an unlikely superstar DJ trio. Their success just proves a tenet key to Fred’s practice: Music is best among friends.

- Apple Music

I'll never get tired of crediting Doechii and Rico Nasty as co-features on that tune as Swamp B--ches is sampled on this.

'you're a star' with Amyl And The Sniffers ended up being my favourite Fred Again.. release this year but this is a bit of a banger nevertheless!
