  • Wow. It's not often a lead single by an A-list superstar leaves me surprised like this. Kudos to Harry for making another musical swerve here. It sounds like the late 00s in a good way, all the cool

  • 100%, I’m not really particularly bothered about Harry any more than any other big artist I would check out because they’ve released, but I can’t think of any big male artist who would release a 5 min

Although I understand why people are saying, "This wouldn't be noticed if it was by anyone else..." I don't really see the point of that argument.

As Joseph said, it could apply to anyone taking a chance and making something completely different to what was expected of them. Its just that Harry has had the balls to get out there are surprise us all.

It's risky, but I hope it pays off and if it doesn't then I'm sure the commercial bangers that were expected will be up next.

Odd lead single choice

It s like releasing Welcome to New York as the lead from 1989. Like, 'here is the concept of the album and the vibe' but its not Shake it Off

It's just a thought I had? I made that comment based on a fair few people 'trying' to get into it when it's glaringly obvious it's not their style of music (Not referencing anyone on Buzzjack as such) it's just an observation because it's Harry some fans are almost forcing themselves to like it whereas they wouldn't pay it dust if it was literally anyone else who released this type of sound/song.

I agree taking risks is great and is what pop music should be about, I just really don't get why it's 5 minutes with what to me sounds like filler, the start of the song isn't even heavy enough production to really get into it as a lead 'Big' comeback track but then I guess that's the point it is a huge risk just a terrible one 🤭

As a non-fan who likes As It Was and kinda nothing else, just listening to the music its a very mid song.

Exactly if I didnt actually like his older stuff I wouldnt even be giving it the time of day, and its not really a 5 minute song is it when the first 45 seconds is just intro and could of easily lost at least 30 seconds elsewhere

I think it's natural that you'll spend more time listening to a song by one of your favourite artists, even if it's a song you don't like so much from them! I think it's a nice attitude to assume the best and hope a song will grow, even if it doesn't eventually. Harry's an artist that has surprised me and made me listen to a lot of different types of music, including something like Kiwi which isn't my typical kinda thing at all! It helps when you're invested in someone and their artistry, and they can open up doors for their fans to then explore similar types of music too by talking about their influences. That's why it's so cool for Harry with the platform that he has to make a song like this, shout out his influences, and potentially start new trends in mainstream music.

I think it's awesome that the song has breathing space, time to grow, time to just "be". I'm here for a lot of commercial pop music right now but it's a shame that everything's being squished into 2 minutes 30 seconds without proper intros. Obviously, most of those songs wouldn't be 5 minutes with an intro etc, but that's not to say it's wasted in this track. It's actually pretty natural in dance music, in extended club mixes, to have a slow build at the start of a song, before a slow wind-down in the outro.

Not knocking either of your opinions on the song though - totally get how this song isn't for everyone!

I really like it on first listen! The production is 🔥 Also totally here for Harry being a risk-taker with this as a lead single. He’s the only truly exciting Main Pop Boy atm for me.

It's very much worth remembering that As It Was is Harry's only particularly commercial lead single! Sign of the Times was a near 6 minute pop-rock ballad, and Lights Up has a very unconventional structure with no real chorus. The latter notably is the lowest selling single of the era (give or take Treat People With Kindness, going by how you count that).

I see what you mean here! As a Gaga Stan I probably wouldn’t have delved into jazz music as much as I do now but she brought that kind of music to me and I appreciate it with others now (I mean with her the majority of her jazz music has actually been covers) but similar mindsets!

Good for him that he is experimenting but god this doesn’t have a replay value at all for me…and I’m very into this kind of stuff!!!

Video about to premiere!

I think the video really leans in to the fact the song goes nowhere. It sort of just happens and the video almost sort of loops around to the beginning

I like the video - unusual to see Harry doing any form of choreography!

Great video! It really elevates the song even more.

So loving this ❤️ I've always liked him but he's never properly excited me for an era before if it's like this.

I’m officially a Little Aperture. I love this

Anything LCD Soundsystem adjacent and I really can’t help myself
