Ordinary will still be top 40 by then!

  • Ordinary will probably be still in the chart

  • I think we can consign to history the 3-year rule for automatic resets - it seems to be anything but Christmas songs that will get reset with a 25% increase now.

Afternoon all hi

I'm a fan of 'Aperture' so looking forward to that hopefully being the new #1 today. Back-to-back British chart toppers would be cool! Interestingly, a similar scenario could play out in the U.S. as both Harry and Olivia Dean are part of a close race at the moment, so could possibly both get there one after the other.

My top 3 songs from each throwback chart:

Louis Tomlinson

3rd single from How Did I Get Here?

Released: 20th January 2026

Label: 78 Productions

Biography

When One Direction went on hiatus at the beginning of 2016, Louis Tomlinson wasn’t totally sure what he was going to do. Yes, he had his reputation as Sassy Louis, the prankish, arched-eyebrow, smack-talking one, but when it came to the actual business of the band, Tomlinson always felt like the kid at the back. Never mind that he’d co-written more of their songs than any other member, including several of their biggest (“Perfect”, “Night Changes”, “Story of My Life”, “No Control”, “Home”)—the thought of him being out on his own was daunting. So he just jumped in. “It wasn’t as if I’d gone into sessions thinking ‘Who am I gonna be’ at that stage,” he told Apple Music in mid-2020. “I kinda had to learn on the job.” Born on Christmas Eve, 1991, Tomlinson was raised in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, one of seven kids from a Northern, working-class family. As a kid, he did a little acting and had joined a band, but he auditioned for The X Factor in large part because of the encouragement of his mother—a bond Tomlinson held with fierce pride until her passing in 2016. His standout solo singles—“Kill My Mind”, “We Made It”, “Walls”—have all the polish and optimism of 1D, but also reflect Tomlinson’s lifelong love of big, guitar-based music like Oasis and Arctic Monkeys. He may have been at the back once, but he’s finding his way to the front. - Apple Music

Dermot Kennedy

Funeral

1st single from The Weight of the Woods

Released: 21st January 2026

Label: Riggins Recording / Interscope Records / Island Records

Biography

Dermot Kennedy’s rip-roaring, free-flowing folk-pop grew out of years singing over rowdy crowds at local bars and open mics and in the streets of Dublin. Born in 1991, the singer/songwriter was raised in the small Irish village of Rathcoole, where he began writing songs as a teenager before studying classical music at Maynooth University and forming folk band Shadows and Dust. He soon set off on his own, busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street, the same spot favored by famous street musicians like Glen Hansard, The Frames frontman and Once actor. Kennedy built up his raspy, throat-ripping howls on the pavement, but found his largest following online after he self-released romantic ballads like 2015’s “An Evening I Will Not Forget” and 2016’s “After Rain”. A larger audience exposed him to a few key producers, including Stephen Kozmeniuk (Koz) and Mike Dean, both of whom have helped enhance the poetic intimacy of Kennedy’s songwriting with rumbling beats and expansive electronic production. Finding a delicate balance between soaring folk and understated hip-hop has been the key to Kennedy’s sound, starting with his 2019 debut album, Without Fear. His strengths come in turning quiet melodies into rousing anthems, including “Power Over Me”, a propulsive paean that captures the intoxicating rush of becoming enraptured, and “Outnumbered”, which feels almost gospel-like in its cathartic chorus. Meanwhile, his voice—a slightly weathered mix of grit and gravel—ties it all together, bringing the raw intensity he learned as a busker to pop charts around the world. - Apple Music

Hope the Arctics have stayed top 20! Also hoping they finally play Prince/The Police on what will probably be their last week in the top 40

I doubt the latter because of a songwriting lawsuit!

Biography

A sensitive troubadour for the age of social media, Sombr places equal emphasis on sound and soul-baring lyrics. "Caroline," the viral hit that helped the singer/songwriter escalate from indie status to a major label while he was still in his teens, relied on cinematic vistas and rolling harmonies as much as his dramatic vocals. By the time he released the EP In Another Life in 2023, Sombr was collaborating with Tony Berg -- a producer known for his work with Phoebe Bridgers and Michael Penn -- and opening up his music in ways he continued to explore on the 2024 single "In Your Arms" and his 2025 Top 40 hit "Undressed." After landing another Top 40 hit with "Back to Friends," he made his full-length debut in 2025 with the breakup-themed I Barely Know Her. - Apple Music

Biography

Disco Lines produces bass-heavy dance tracks which are generally rousing and gleeful, yet occasionally yearning and wistful. He first became popular when his cover of Taylor Swift's "Love Story" went viral in 2020, and he reached Billboard's dance charts for the first time with 2022's "Baby Girl." The EP Loveland appeared in 2023, and the producer founded his own label, Good Good Records, the same year. His 2025 remix of Tinashe's "No Broke Boys" reached Billboard's Hot 100. - Apple Music
