Wonderful Life only got to number 72 in 1986 but was reissued after 'Sweetest Smile' reached number 8 the following year. The beautifully photographed video was filmed in Southport and Wallasey. Black was the Liverpudlian singer Colin Vearncombe. He moved to Ireland but sadly died in 2016, two weeks after a car accident.

Yes, I can confirm I'll be hosting the number 9 poll next year.

  • Or maybe Bananarama's version leans in more to people's pop tastes rather than being to do with recency? A 40 year old song isn't really that much more recent compared to a 56 year old song!

27. Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell 1082pts

Released more than a year after its parent album, Bat Out Of Hell still reached number 15 in 1979. It was reissued in 1993 after the success of the number 1 single 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That).

I Miss You is up there as one of my favourite Blink songs. Tom's voice doesn't really fit the tone but at least it makes for a memorable performance that has helped the song live on as a minor meme! Had my first listen of Wonderful Life because of this rate, another example of 80s pop that just doesn't click with me at all. Not a fan of theatrical stuff for the most part but Bat Out Of Hell is a huge classic, an epic 9 minutes which should've finished higher ♥️

Inevitability at this stage I’m starting to lose songs from my top 25. All three of them, with Meatloaf in my top 10. But my 1 pointer clings on.

Another two classics lost there in 'Bat Out Of Hell' and 'Wonderful Life'. I've never heard anything else by Black, I should probably seek something out.

Blink-182 have made some bangers in their time but for some reason I never properly took to 'I Miss You', it just lacks something for me. It's not a bad song but it's not one I'd ever rush to play.

Wonderful Life is the song I grew up to. It will always be special song for me. The melody is timeless and always gets me chills in positive way.

One of best songs ever recorded for me

Right it’s beautiful and his Debut Album with the same name is one the best from the 80s.So many great songs on it Everything Is Coming Up Roses,Sometimes For The Asking Finder,Paradise,Sweetest Smile .

Three bangers in a row gone there, a lot of my favourites starting to fall before we've reached halfway 😢

I only know Sweetest Smile, which I used to love. I guess it has a vibe of ‘You Have Been Loved’ about it.

I think these days I find both Black tracks a little depressing - so even though ‘Wonderful Life’ used to be a favourite of mine, I didn’t place it particularly high.

I Miss You is an internet cafe bop x

I don't know what that means but I wouldn't categorise it as a bop of any kind x

From his next album, I love 'You're A Big Girl Now' and from the third one, 'Feel Like Change'. There's also an early single called 'More Than The Sun', I don't think it's on Spotify but it can be found on youtube (the 1984 version is much better than the 1982 one). Colin was certainly one of the best vocalists from the 80s.

From the summer of 1983, this was Bananarama's fifth top 10 single. It also reached the Billboard top 10 the following year after featuring in the film 'The Karate Kid'. A remix returned the song to the top 20 in 1989 while a cover version by Ace Of Base got to number 8 in 1998 (scoring 25 points in the first round).

This was the fourth single to be taken from the huge selling album 'Thriller' and was in the top 40 at the same time as 'Cruel Summer'. An earlier version had been recorded for Michael's 1978 'Off The Wall' album but didn't make the cut. The Cameroonian musician Manu Dibango received an out of court settlement after claiming that the hook from his song 'Soul Makossa' had been used without his permission.

It was all about consistency for Walking On Sunshine with only two people putting it in their top 10 and just five in their bottom 10. An earlier 1983 version was released as a single and didn't chart, this is a 1985 re-recording. The group famously went on to win the Eurovision Song Contest for the UK in 1997.

Walking On Sunshine is an example of 80s pop I actually like! Really fun and optimistic, always loved it. Cruel Summer is alright, sounds less dated than Venus but isn't as strong of a song as that imo. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' is of course an MJ classic, one of my favourites from him.
