I'll be honest, I don't think this looks good on Chappell at all, especially given it's not the first incident where she's come across as less-than-favourable towards her fans. Don't get me wrong, th

I find it hard to believe this is a smear campaign when the optics just look terrible on a surface level. I understand fans wanting to see the best in her, and I don't think everything she's said or done is without merit, she makes some good points particularly about extreme fan behaviour as well as the impact of paparazzi on a wider level in celebrity culture (not to mention her wider stances on things like trans rights, Palestine, etc all make her a great role model). There's always conversations to be had there, and it's not a new thing at all. To those who absorb it through the headlines they see on social media, all they see is Chappell yelling at photographers, ranting about paparazzi, and now upsetting a young girl - it's no wonder there's so much negativity towards her, but it's about nuance, and more than one thing being true at the same time.

Therefore, I do equally find it difficult to see an 11 year old girl looking and smiling, without actively approaching, as any sort of invasion of privacy. If you're a public figure in a communal space, that's the least you should expect in my opinion. I'd entirely understand security intervention if someone had tried to talk to her, take a selfie, etc while she was eating breakfast - time and place is important and everyone deserves to have boundaries. In other settings, this does come with the job to a degree, and she's entitled to refuse any fan request but a polite conversation or a request for a selfie/hug isn't inappropriate as long as Chappell's response, either way, is respected. There's a fine line to walk but if you're in the public eye, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect some level of public recognition.

As I said before, we'll probably never truly know what happened between Chappell and the guard, and whether he was directed by her to intervene or not. Chappell's own wording about him not being her own personal security was VERY careful, as it's clear he wasn't hotel security either (confirmed by the hotel itself). If employed by the festival she was playing at, then it's obvious that, in that moment, he was there for Chappell's security, and acting in her interests (at her request or otherwise). Regardless, the guard overstepped the mark and berated both the girl and her mum, and if he was employed by the festival, this is something I'd have flagged up immediately to them if I were Chappell or someone on her team, because it's caused an absolute shitstorm that isn't helping her public image, and there's every chance she isn't responsible for this.

Honestly what happened? At worst it sounds like a security guard asked someone not to do something. It’s not actually a big deal. Given everything going on in the world right now, this really isn’t the issue to be doubling down on.

Why is it still being discussed now? Because people are trying to smear her. She rubs all the right people up the wrong way and like Blacksquare, I’m not a fan but I am here for it.

Catherine Harding's statement is well worth listening to as she explains precisely what the security guard said to her and her daughter

And sure, there are way bigger issues in the world, that's always been the case, but people love to get wrapped up in celebrity culture and gossip.

But isn’t that the issue? That’s all this is? Gossip? It’s not important and people could do with be a little less obsessed with it. She appears to be there for the music and art, not the culture.

Is there any video of Chappell Roan online where she is kind to someone in public? So we can see her softer side too?

Very well said, probably everything I’d have to say on it without being able to word it quite so well lol

Again, that’s what the mother says. You don’t know if there’s more to it.

People seem determined to vilify Chappell for something she didn’t actually herself and maybe didn’t happen the way it was reported.

People on this thread are quite clearly put off by her not engaging with fans on the same level as some other celebs. I dare say some people are so used to having access to their celebs that they just can’t compute one that doesn’t give them that.

‘Can we find footage of Chappell being kind to the public’ what a ridiculousnous is that? Tell you what, let’s follow her 24/7 with a live stream camera and whip her through the streets every time she says something we don’t like?

She doesn’t owe that girl anything and she doesn’t owe any of you anything either.

I dont care whether she does and doesnt interact with her fans it hasn't stopped her being 1 of my most played artists of the year so far 🤣,

However her statement just instantly shoving all the blame onto the security guard doesnt do her any favours

Literally none of what Jameela raised has anything to do with the actual incident. So while valid in a broader sense, it’s like a collation of lots of different things all slapped together - as well as pretty much everything I’ve seen in her defence being rooted in TikTok conspiracy theories 😭 - ignoring what people are actually taking issue with.

The incident being the 11 year old at breakfast is what has lead to all of this backlash on social media the last few days, ie the smear campaign? People are taking this as an opportunity to pile on criticisms as well, digging up things about her upbringing, how she got her start, old clips of her etc. Jameela is just listing stuff yes but it's all reasons as to why certain types of people would want to ruin her reputation/career

I really feel bad for her, and wouldn’t be surprised if each time something like this happens it makes her less likely to want to continue performing and perhaps even being a musician at all.

And this would be a major loss as she’s the best new mainstream pop star to have emerged in the last few years.

We all have off days and I certainly wouldn’t be at my best at a hotel breakfast in the morning. There’s pressure for celebrities to have to ‘perform’ for the public at all times but they are human beings.

I remember when I went to Melodifestivalen 2009 with my friend we saw Molly Sandén and a pre-fame Eric Saade (her then boyfriend - we didn’t know who he was until he became famous the following year) eating breakfast at the table next to us in the hotel. She was performing in the final that evening and relaxing, and as tempting as it was to go over and get an autograph I felt it would be fairer to just leave her be.

I get with this Chappell event it was a little girl seeing her idol and getting excited but she certainly is entitled in a lowkey environment like that to just exist for a bit and eat her breakfast.

Perhaps it could have been handled differently by all involved but it’s definitely been blown into such a much bigger thing than I’d have ever expected it to.

Being even slightly recognisable in the social media age where every single encounter is analysed and scrutinised must be very difficult.

She's Taylor Swift, omg look at my new personality based on my new man - TOTALLY AUTHENTIC NOW!!!! - levels of douchiness. I've stopped listening tk her. Enjoy your obscurity! You deserve it xx

I’m in two minds about this and it’s not hard to discern why

Do I think Chappell has put herself in situations where she has to put her foot in her mouth? Absolutely. So has a good 95% of the world. That’s human nature. She’s had her moments of being hypocritical just like everybody else on this earth. It’s not excusing anything, it’s just how it is, and we need to make sure we hold her and ourselves accountable when these things happen.

I do think however that the paparazzi, the media, and most importantly, the general public, have put her and other people with varying degrees of celebrity status into positions where they cannot win. Any move they make is going to result in a pocket of civilization getting mad and screaming for accountability that they won’t accept. They're expected to perform every waking moment because they don’t know who will see them, and then they get screamed at for being performative. It’s even worse when you’ve been given a reputation and/or have been branded as problematic by the masses, so now something like this that would have been a nothingburger otherwise, is making headlines news. It also doesn’t help that it has been very easy to spread misinformation, even more so with the rise of AI. It is very easy for someone on stan twitter to take a piece of media, wrap around a narrative of their choice, and present it in a way that fits their agenda. Couple that with a society that cultivates parasocial relationships and catch-22’s and it’s no wonder how and why this became such a shitstorm.

I have no doubt that intersectionality also plays a part in this. I’d imagine this were someone with more visible privilege than Chappell then they might end up getting so much as a slap on the wrist at worst, or they get memed and immortalized by the worst pockets of society. Just like I’d imagine it would be worse if a BIPOC artist were in her shoes.

None of us will truly know the whole story, even with more information coming out about this whole debacle, and if this were handled differently and/or privately, then this would have played out differently. Instead this situation is hurting all parties involved (both Chappell and the child for sure, maybe the security guard, who knows about the parents), and it’s not fair to anyone.

It is also important that we need to take these things with a bit of nuance, because a lot of people go into these tabloid news stories with a notion that there is a clear protagonist and antagonist and… real life is NEVER like that.

Kayla says has a really good video on this whole debacle and how this is a cautionary tale of what happens to human interaction when nuance is thrown out the window
