Biography

In the early 2000s, American radio was hungry for new sounds, and one of the most successful crossover acts was a young man from Jamaica who had once—improbably—been a professional water polo player. Sean Paul, born Sean Paul Francis Henriques in Kingston in 1973, had left sports to take up the microphone in the mid-’90s, developing a driving, authoritative sound anchored by his surprisingly accessible and monotonal toasting. Even if you couldn’t decipher the patois, you got the gist of his sentiments, which fell somewhere between “Get on the dance floor” and “I love girls.” His first album, 2000’s Stage One, earned him some recognition, collecting singles dating from 1996, but it was 2002’s Dutty Rock that pushed him into global superstardom, with the huge hits “Get Busy” (an eternal dance-floor filler that, two decades later, found a new audience on TikTok) and “Gimme the Light”. In 2005, The Trinity cemented the singer’s status as the dancehall collaborator for artists like Beyoncé and Rihanna. Though he charted less as the decade progressed, he continued to release his trademark boundary-crossing music and experienced a resurgence in 2016 with several massively successful collaborations, including “Cheap Thrills” with Sia and “No Lie” with Dua Lipa. The world, it seemed, had caught back up to Sean Paul. As dancehall riddims inspired reggaetón, infiltrated Afrobeats and even influenced pop artists like Justin Bieber and Drake in the ensuing years, Paul found himself again in demand, giving star turns on tracks with artists including Migos and J Balvin. - Apple Music

Biography

PinkPantheress is reviving Y2K for a new generation. Her sugary yet wistful pop ripples with old-school samples and styles ranging from UK dance to R&B to pop-punk, making her a versatile artist who already counts Ice Spice, Troye Sivan, Skrillex, Mura Masa, and Kaytranada among her collaborators. Before she became a pop phenomenon, the London-based singer-songwriter and producer (born in 2001 in Bath, England) spent her free time sharing on social media the songs she’d made while studying at university. Clips of early singles like 2021’s “Pain,” “Break It Off,” and “Just for me” went viral and hit the UK Singles Chart in the lead-up to her debut mixtape, to hell with it, later that year. Her 2023 single with Ice Spice, “Boy’s a liar, Pt. 2,” exploded internationally, marking her first Top 10 hit. PinkPantheress followed it with a feature on the Barbie soundtrack and her official debut LP, Heaven Knows. - Apple Music

Biography

The Jackson 5’s exuberant bubblegum soul was forged in the hardscrabble town of Gary, IN, fomented by a father who had sublimated his own musical dreams. One night in the early ’60s, Joe Jackson discovered that his sons Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine had been fiddling around with his guitar. Initially furious, he quickly recognized their innate talent, and the three brothers began performing together; younger siblings Marlon and Michael joined a few years later. By mid-decade, the family act was gaining fame locally and winning talent shows—most notably at New York’s Apollo Theater in 1967. They signed to Motown Records in 1968 and moved to Los Angeles, where the songwriting conglomeration The Corporation began feeding them songs. Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5 dropped in late 1969, and the single “I Want You Back” was a mad burst of joy from its first bass-driven, jangling notes. It was the first in an unprecedented stream of four No. 1 hits in less than a year. The Jackson 5 attained incredible crossover success, bolstered by an innovative marketing campaign that included Saturday-morning cartoons, coloring books, and even a board game. Later albums couldn’t—and didn’t—match that initial flash of brilliance, but the act had become a cornerstone of pop music. Motown never allowed the brothers to write songs or play instruments—a massive mistake in light of the undeniable charm (and success) of their self-made 1978 outing for Epic (as The Jacksons), Destiny. As Michael’s solo fame skyrocketed in the early ’80s, his star power helped turn the 1984 album Victory and its accompanying tour into blockbuster events. The siblings released one more album, 1989’s 2300 Jackson Street, and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. - Apple Music

Biography

Noah Kahan pens tenderhearted meditations on life’s ups and downs that are rustic enough for country cabins yet infectious enough for the pop charts. The singer-songwriter was born in 1997 and grew up on a farm in Vermont. He spent his youth refining his folk picking on guitar, banjo and mandolin while transforming his voice into the raspy falsetto captured on his debut hit, 2017's "Hurt Somebody". Recorded while bouncing between New York, L.A. and points in between, Kahan’s first two full-lengths, 2019’s Busyhead and 2021’s I Was / I Am, showcase an artist sharpening his pop instincts. When the Covid pandemic hit in 2020, Kahan returned to Vermont and—feeling nostalgic for his New England childhood—stripped his music to its gritty soul, resulting in 2022's breakout album, Stick Season. He went on to reimagine several cuts, including a version of “Dial Drunk” featuring rapper Post Malone, that reflect a gift for shaping folk and pop into increasingly novel expressions. - Apple Music
