Why are Spice Girls, Gaga and Madonna on this list? Not sure being an ally counts as a queer artist.

Also shouldn’t Harry Styles be here or does queerbaiting not count?

I guess because Melanie B is in the band and she is bisexual. She had a relationship with a woman in LA and of course the whole Geri saga!

Apparently Madonna says she has slept with a handful of women too.

Julia claims to be bisexual but also unfortunately identifies as a homophobe, while Lena is straight but also an ally (or at least she was around a decade ago, but who knows today).

gaga and madonna are bi, mel b from spice girls is too iirc. A simple google search tells you that

This pathetic list proves how atrocious the situation is in the industry and who is getting pushed by major labels etc. How embarrassing.

Queer people are the backbone of the pop music industry especially when it comes to fandoms, so it’s disheartening to see how so few of us are actually represented in the industry. I also thought the list would grow bigger in 2010s and 2020s but alas it’s not the case.

I think you need to factor in that we get so fewer #1s than we did in the 00s now (for example) due to streaming, so there’s far less chance of the list growing.

And I feel like streaming tends to favour MOR acts with wide appeal. Gays just make music too fabulous for the general population kink

Oh I thought you were calling me pathetic haha, I think some other factors for the decline is that groups were more popular during the 2000s and so if one member is queer, all their hits would be included. Also a lot of the early acts came out in the 2010-20s, so there's probably going to be more hits added retroactively from the 2010-20s over the following years and decades.

Oh, of course not. Thanks for compiling it!

The recent weeks at #1 alone don't tell much of a story. 'Messy' and 'Pink Pony Club' were 2 of the 3 biggest songs in the UK last year, and the list doesn't include #2s, but 'Good Luck, Babe!' and 'BIRDS OF A FEATHER' were both in the top 10 of 2024 and top 15 of 2025.

Is Kim Petras the only transgender person to have a number 1 ?

Teddy Geiger had a #1 as a songwriter/producer on Shawn Mendes' "Stitches"

not sure if anyone else would be joining that club

I hope that we get at least one #1 song with a queer artist. If we don't, it'll be the first year since 1995 to not have one.
