If done properly and fairly, this is a great thing! Need to see how it actually works in practice.

Get me those Gaga tickets without the stress and fighting over ticketmaster cheer

This is awful in my opinion. Capitalism at its best. They don’t care about actually giving ‘real’ fans the opportunity to get first access, they just want something that will force people into using the platform more in a bid to try and avoid having to go to war on Ticketmaster. And all it’ll do within fan circles is make the parasocial maniacs manipulate it as much as they can and judge others based on their Spotify activity.

My first thought is... how will people try to manipulate this? Worried it'll just lead to people putting their favourite artist on repeat overnight without listening to it to up their streams. If implemented properly then it could be a nice idea but I'm sceptical right now.

For me this is a great way of rewarding fans and what better way ti show you're a fan than actually listening to the artist's music?

Yes it is also to promote Spotify but good for them for also rewarding fans in a time when it is getting increasingly harder to see artists live!

I like what the intention of this seems to be, but I'm wary about the execution of it.

This will not solve the issue of there simply not being enough tickets for everyone who would want to attend the event sometimes. The only solution is for artists to offer multiple dates but it will never going to happen because exclusivity creates FOMO and even more hype and attention and money.

Let’s gamify getting concert tickets even more now. Only on Spotify

This world is doomed lol

Need this to be on other streaming sites too as I’m an Apple man but I like the idea although I think it should be more on if you physically bought the latest album / release preceding the tour.

And once again, yet another reason why I'm glad I ditched Spotify and went to Deezer instead. Pardon my French but they are f***ing evil. Unless you're Taylor Swift or Beyonce, most artists I know are barely breaking even from touring, not to mention fans having harder work of getting tickets than ever before. How is this helping anyone's situation, really? Honestly. F*** Spotify.

Brb buying 15 different Taylor single versions to have a possibility get on that list.

Oh... I thought this was an easy W for people here... clearly not lmao!

I think it's a great idea and I don't see how it can be seen as a negative... at all? The only criticism I can think of is that just because someone streams an album by an artist 20 times doesn't make them anymore or less of a fan who has "only" streamed it 5 times etc.. but as has been pointed out here, I don't know another way to make it fairer to "genuine" fans. Maybe they should actually do what I just said above and prioritise those who listen to the full album more than a couple of times? Because I assume those of us who are fans of an artist will listen to their albums more than a few times in full once they're released compared to those who listen once and then only access the hits via Hot Hits or something?

Idk. But I'm excited to see how this will work and I really hope it's not just like the 100 top fans of an artist for example. I can't imagine I'm in the top 1000 Britney Spears listeners for example, but I clearly listen to her enough to consider myself to be a big enough fan for her tour etc..? Maybe they can utilise our "history" where they can and see who our most played artists are and try and find some consistencies through that or something, idk?

Also confused by the extreme reactions of hatred to this and yet a complete lack of suggestions for other possible ways of ensuring "real" fans get tickets as a priority... like what is Deezer doing to help the cause (away from how they split funds for artists - which is a separate issue)?

What if the artist doesn't want to do multiple days because of exhaustion? Or because they want to tour multiple cities or countries instead?

How is the world doomed because same genuine fans of artists will get tickets before ticket touters have a chance to? blink

So much hyperbole with no real backing and before we even see how this will work..

Maybe spotify should fix their much bigger problems before doing useless PR stunts like these. They will still not pay artists enough, they will still use fake artists with identical music to boost overall streams and withhold money from real musicians, they will still continue deleting smaller artist accounts if a scammer adds your music to bot playlists, there will still be no way to delete music that falsely uses your feature (because it’s quite easy to do it still, especially for smaller artists, and there is zero verification required for that!).

This is a deeply problematic company with extremely shitty practices and I shall be using hyperbole and assuming the worst given their history.

And that's all valid but... how will any of that fix the issue we are discussing in this thread which is scammers getting hold of tickets before genuine fans. Surely this is a small step in the direction of making it more likely for fans to get access first. I have yet to see a better solution offered in this thread for that problem? And even if we do have better solutions, what are other streaming platforms or agencies doing to support that???

Maybe Spotify should work with local governments to make it more difficult for ticket touters to exist instead of creating even more scarcity.

  • Author

A good suggestion! Hope they do that too and hope other streaming platforms do the same. Here the government have introduced criminal charges for ticket touts but maybe even more can be done with Spotify, Apple, Deezer etcs support.

Now we're getting somewhere.

I think the natural reaction to something like this that is clearly done by a large corporation to draw support to their platform (and more efficient data collection) rather than altruism is some scepticism.

If it works out and they have a good system for determining which fans can get priority tickets, sure, but will feel worse if you aren't determined a big enough fan because your listening profile isn't right. I can't say for sure yet whether this will be effective or a marketing ploy.

Fully agreed, Spotify needs to have a feature like Netflix where it says "still listening" if people do sleep stream.
