This was just a few weeks before I started college, I was in the weird no man's land summer holiday between finishing school and starting college (and working my first job that summer), so many songs here remind me of working in Asda and hearing them played in there (Beyoncé, Deepest Blue, Jaimeson), while a few others moving up the playlist ahead of release remind me of my first few weeks at college (Dido, Black Eyed Peas, Christina/Lil' Kim).

It also feels notably 'cooler' than the 1999 playlist recently posted when you look at the list of songs that weren't playlisted, so some time between 1999 and 2003 Radio 1 decided to dial down the cheesier and more fun stuff somewhat.

I do remember Breathe feeling like it came a bit out of nowhere to No.1 so it figures that Radio 1 weren't playlisting it.

Yeh i agree, I was 20 and in uni. So many good retro songs. I guess late 2003 was when they were preparing to introduce the Brit pop II era with bands like The Darkness, Snow Patrol and Franz Ferdinand getting top 40 hits in the next 12 months.

Was that Coldplay track a single?

Also KOL with their first truely big era being supported and QOTSA on the C List then and they were Hottest Record just a few weeks ago on Jack Saunders show.

I think the Coldplay song was kind of like a promo single now. Serviced to radio, and I’m sure there were promo singles, but not a full commercial release.

The first album had Don’t Panic at the end of the campaign which was a fairly similar situation iirc.

The Coldplay song charted at #100, it must have had a very limited physical release.

Part of R1's thinking for not playlisting 'Breathe' may have been that they didn't want Sean Paul on the playlist twice, so prioritised his own song. Feels like they dropped the ball with 'Fly On The Wings Of Love' too by not even giving it a C-list spot - at least it had an iconic chart run without their support.

Appropriate timing to see 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun' on the playlist before tomorrow's eclipse (also a brilliant song that would be much used on Gavin & Stacey), and also William Orbit's highest peaking artist credit (RIP).

Of course if they had playlisted 'Breathe' that'd mean they'd have Sean Paul on the playlist 5 times.

I always remember thinking at the time that they added the Coldplay track as they were so big and wanted to continue to play more tracks from the album as there was no cd single release (which was a shock at the time).

Does anyone know if they play ‘Breathe’ on R1 Anthems like they do with ‘Moves Like Jagger’?

Definitely, they've played it 189 times since 2017 according to these stats!

So basically completely ignoring the fact they snubbed it back in the day and giving it official R1 Anthem status!

Even though it wasnt officially playlisted I do remember hearing Breathe get played quite a bit on R1 back then. Sometimes they just refused to add stuff to the main playlist. Another one I remember getting played often but was never added officially was Mad'House "Like A Prayer".

They definitely ignored 'Hips Don't Lie' at the time. 'Spinning Around' I'm not sure about, I don't remember it being ignored but I might be wrong, maybe someone with a better memory than me can confirm.

Yeah, they didn't "snub" 'Spinning Around' but they were very hesitant to add it until about a couple of weeks before its release. I think Parlophone really had their work cut out with them getting it on there after her wilderness period!
