Classic Taylor blocking an up and coming band for another number one that she doesn’t need. It would’ve meant a lot more to Keo.

How is it unfair if old music is still popular?

Melody has a UK top 40 hit! She released her first song at age 8 and she's still just 19.

She's also not on the song but hey ho

It's an unfair advantage due to broken chart rules that aren't fit for how people actually consume music. Unless you think The Beatles should have been charting every week in the 90s as well. A 3 year limit on the main chart and a separate classics chart is such an obvious fix.

As I type this more old crap denying new songs their moment in the chart.

“Old crap”?! No Scrubs and Dancing On My Own?! Be serious

Biography

She’s the dream girl. The free spirit. The candy-coated pinup and the well of inner strength. She’s a little Disney, a little Betty Boop. But she’s also an avatar for the modern female pop star in a post-Madonna world—the liberated woman who kicks open doors without knocking. Under all the sparkle and glitter, you could sense an artist grappling with messy human contradictions—about sexuality, about self-love, about asserting femininity in a man’s world. Talking to Apple Music in 2019, Katy Perry said she leads with her gut and lets her mind follow, and doesn’t make much sense of any of it until the work is done. “The themes are joy,” she said. “They are empowerment. They are trying to expand the boundaries of what I think, and trying to learn from all this opportunity.” She might actually be a superhero. But she also might just be what she is: a girl from Southern California who worked like crazy and didn’t flinch. Born in 1984 to Pentecostal pastors in Santa Barbara, Perry (originally Katy Hudson) grew up on gospel music, putting out her first album, 2001’s Katy Hudson, on a Christian label. At some point during adolescence, she discovered Queen, a band whose mix of flamboyance, power, and sexualized wit cracked her creative world open. (Perry named her fragrance Killer Queen, after one of the band’s signature songs.) Club tracks, ballads, classic pop-rock, and contemporary electronic music—Perry’s production collaborators are brilliant (Dr. Luke, Max Martin, benny blanco), but it's her songwriting, her image, her balance of playfulness and confidence that pull the package together. And for every “Teenage Dream” or “I Kissed a Girl,” there's a “Firework” or a “Roar,” music that turns expressions of vulnerability into anthems of inclusion and self-renewal—a dynamic that has made Perry an inspirational figure not only to young women, but for an LGBTQ community she vocally supports. Perry doesn’t quite know how she went so platinum—2010’s Teenage Dream reached commercial heights previously set only by Michael Jackson—but while the numbers are nice, the work is what's important. “It’s up to me to make the right choice in my mind to keep putting one foot in front of the other and going forward,” Perry told Apple Music. “Not going backwards—I could easily go backwards by literally looking at a photo. But I have to go forward, because I know what’s good for me now.” - Apple Music

Biography

Miguel’s sound evolves every time he encounters a new way to express love—and as one of pop’s friskiest experimentalists, that means his career is a study in subverting the very notion of a conventional R&B star. The singer-songwriter born Miguel Jontel Pimentel (Los Angeles, 1985) was drawn to music’s insider/outsiders from the beginning, mimicking the moves of Michael Jackson at family gatherings at age three, and later drawing both artistic and sartorial inspiration from the likes of David Bowie, Prince and Jimi Hendrix. So when it came time for his 2010 debut, All I Want Is You, Miguel flouted tradition by moving elegantly, sexily, both within and beyond his assigned genre. In back-to-back tracks, he slid from boom-bap soul to vulnerable a cappella to uptempo electro-funk. His confidence found composure on 2012’s Kaleidoscope Dream, which sounds as Technicolour and wondrous as the title suggests. On 2015’s Wildheart, he dove deeper into psych rock, incorporating his own guitar and a Lenny Kravitz cameo into raw, grinding cuts that also supported Kurupt rapping and Miguel singing in Spanish. By 2017’s War & Leisure, he seemed to be flitting across genres just to prove he could. After returning to his Art Dealer Chic EP series following almost a decade-long gap in 2021, Miguel explored the dark, difficult aspects of his divorce on 2025’s CAOS. During an Apple Music radio takeover ahead of the album, he cited the influence of synth- and sample-wielding outliers like Nine Inch Nails and Flying Lotus alongside the brooding alt-rock of Nirvana and Radiohead. But despite those chameleonic tendencies, he reassured listeners that his music remains very much his: “It’s always gonna be me at the centre, and you’re always going to hear my voice in the lyrics.” - Apple Music

Biography

Temper City is a Los Angeles-based Israeli rock band whose stylish single, "Self Aware," became a viral hit in early 2026. Members Eytan Peled, Chen Kordova, and Aviv Barenholtz had all previously worked as producers and songwriters for various Israeli and international acts before forming Temper City in 2021. With its moody alt-rock tone reminiscent of 2010s bands like Cage the Elephant and the Neighbourhood, "Self Aware" was released in February 2026 as the trio's debut single. It went on to reach charts around the world, including the U.S. where Temper City became the first Israeli band ever to make the Billboard Hot 100. - Genius

At least we have "Dancing On My Own" and "No Scrubs" to make it a bit better.

A poor man's indie rock record. It's more a parody of what indie rock sounds like to people who hate or have never heard of indie rock.

Self Aware is fine. Its about on a par with anything Fontaines DC put out

I just want to see recent pop music get it's flowers rather than a chart clogged up with old crap. It's not hard to see why the rules need changed.

Can we please be careful in our wording for the Temper City disdain - simply hating on it for the artists being Israeli is not okay. There's plenty of valid reasons to not enjoy their presence in the chart but their nationality alone isn't one.

Just now, No Sleeep said:

It’s not an “unfair advantage” if they simply get more streams than new songs. No one is forced to listen to anything and no one is entitled to a high chart position

Back in the day we were still playing our old tapes and CDs each week, as well as buying the new ones in the chart, it's just that our continued consumption of those old tapes and CDs was not counted for the chart since it only measured what was actually being bought in the shops, not what was being played. Including streaming meant that suddenly the chart was measuring continued consumpiton of older tracks as well as initial uptake of the newest stuff. Nowadays we seem to be at a point where the newest stuff can no longer break through due to the heavy presence on the charts of the older stuff, and whether that is unfair or not is debatable. I actually checked how many new songs (those that first charted in the actual year in question) made the Top 40 in each quarter of this year and the last quarter of last year. Q4 2025 and Q1 and Q2 2026 averaged about 40 new top 40 hits, but this current quarter (the chart we're listening to is the last sales week of Q3) had only 26 new Top 40 hits up to last week, and with today's new chart we will get to about 30 or so.

Here's a playlist of tracks that were actually new Top 40 hits this quarter: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7uizvL4D2wu271lb2Y24qg
