Yeah, hopefully more labels will follow. Props to Ministry Of Sound for launching Hard2Beat and broadening their sound. AATW apparently have signed Kate Ryan's "Ella Elle L'a" which is good. Dont think it'll be a hit but its always some kind of support.

R&B is great, but lately for many of the big artists its just pop. Hence why you probably like. Ne-Yo - Closer, Michelle Williams - We Break The Dawn, Rihanna - Disturbia, Chris Brown - Forever, etc... are pop songs imo. Whatever the genre, I do like this new sound. However, I love late 90s and early 00s R&B with acts like Destiny's Child, Kandi, Sisqo, Mya, etc. 2003 is probably the best year imo which produced some amazing classics, and its definitely the biggest year for the genre in the charts.

AATW don't seem to do well with singles, but at least it will be heard over here...I know Voyage Voyage was on the last Clubland...

I was never into Kandi, Sisqo, Mya and I don't ever listen to them now or fondly remember them...I do think the current synth-pop/r&b-dance crossover genre is absolutely brilliant, and long may it continue

2003 was my favourite period though, but then I love raw R&B.

R Kelly, Beyonce, Big Brovaz, Blu Cantrell, Lumidee, Craig David, Ashanti, Kelly Rowland, Kevin Lyttle, Sean Paul, Nodesha, Wayne Wonder, Busta Rhymes & Mariah, Black Eyed Peas, etc... but yeah, i'm enjoying the new pop wave and its definitely better than the current rap/r&b scene

see that's where we differ...I hate most of those

except Crazy In Love, Stole and the Mariah/Busta track, although I didn't exaclty love those tracks either

I guess if you didnt like early R&B you would never end up liking it. Again, you prefer Ne-Yo's "Closer" where I prefer "Because Of You", which shows I can prefer normal r&b over the disco-pop :)
Radio 1 are getting silly nowadays

They've been stupid for quite a while now, although they seem to be slowly making exceptions on their playlist, like Basshunter.

exactly, whereas I didn't care much for Because Of You...I don't think I'll ever become a huge R&B/Hip-Hop fan, it's mainly only the hybrid genre ones I like

Although I must say I was a late lover of R&B, I started liking it around 2000, then I started loving all the classics that I had missed or disliked before. Eve - Who's That Girl was one of those records that I had on repeat and I thought it was so out of character to me, then I realized I had quite a lot of R&B on my playlist.

I never cared much for rock although I do like some of the older hits. Now I just cant stand 98% of the guitar genres, talk about overrated.

at work the other day, they played an entire day of 80's dad rock, because it was father's day

my ears were hurting so much after the 8th hour of dad rock, I just wanted to scream

I've always liked the odd R&B song but I think the turning point was early last year...I seem to remember having 4 R&B songs in my top ten at the same time...I definitely think Timbaland helped to make the genre more listenable for me...particularly his stuff with Nelly Furtado

I think Timbaland was definitely the turning point in R&B because he incorporated fresh sounds into his songs, many of them borrowing from the European dance scene.

definitiely, it's just now there are people starting to beat him at his own game...his production is getting a bit tired now sadly :( 4 Minutes and Elevator are incredibly similar for example

I absolutely agree two of those lot have been awful releases

They most certainly do. They only add a dance song if a dance song is removed. Seeing as their only 5 proper dance songs in the playlist, that seems to be the quota each week for the genre. Indie-rock takes the largest stake of the playlist, so thats why every week there are many indie additions. It wasnt always like that, they seem to adapt when public tastes change, but that doesnt happen until its been very established that the genre they previously supported no longer generates hits.

I think that R1 do play a lot of dance though, ignoring Indie rock for a second. they've playlisted Cascada, who have definately flopped, and lots of dance gets to the b list that doesn't reach the top 40, or even the top 100. For example they have constantly B listed Bob Sinclair even though What i want and Together flopped, and they wouldn't do that to a pop/R&B song that has no potential at all and thats the biggest genre around. They also give a whole 12 hours on Friday to dance, and very niche stuff aswell that 95% of people will hate because its really repetitive. One of the problems with dance is that there are a few big hits (Basshunter, H Two O, September) and most songs that gets a lot of support will semi-flop (Cahill for example) and rest (a vast majority) get some, but not much support will definately be a complete bomb.

What I Want hasnt been released yet, neither has Together which was cancelled and not playlisted on Radio 1. And they playlist some pop/R&B songs that flop, Flo Rida comes to mind, Jay Sean and Taio Cruz have also underperformed. They have 12 hours of dance but they have 12 hours or R&B on saturdays, and most of the week days are rock nights.

They may playlist some dance flops (not many, as the majority of this year only had like 5 dance songs on the playlist each week...), but it doesnt even compare to the amount of indie flops they playlist. At least when they playlisted loads of dance in 2000, the genre actually was successful in the charts unlike indie, and 95% of the dance songs playlisted were hits.

Because The Night enters at 85 in the UK Singles Chart this week on D/loads ^_^
