December 15, 200717 yr Impressive for Shania to have 1999's xmas No.1 album considering how long it had been out
December 15, 200717 yr Just look at the sales the Spice Girls had in their first week are incredible, and you compare it with Westlife and even Girls Aloud they thrashed easily. Westlife who I thought would have sold way more than that considering they have such a huge following, and Girls Aloud who won the Popstars competition thought would have sold more. Eventhough I'm surprised to see that Leona didn't sell as much as Shayne not even anywhere close either but now whose bigger than who??? hahahhahahaha

December 15, 200717 yr 1980 St. Winifred’s School Choir There’s no one quite like grandma Technically this was actually John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War Is Over), but back then they didn't publish a Christmas week chart (it was just the same chart as the week before) and so it wasn't counted :(
December 15, 200717 yr Technically this was actually John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War Is Over), but back then they didn't publish a Christmas week chart (it was just the same chart as the week before) and so it wasn't counted :( Was that not to do with strikes - they couldn't get the chart to be complied or something....
December 15, 200717 yr Was that not to do with strikes - they couldn't get the chart to be complied or something.... Nope, generally back then they never did it for Christmas week as it was far more labour intensive back then and most staff were off for Christmas...
December 15, 200717 yr Nope, generally back then they never did it for Christmas week as it was far more labour intensive back then and most staff were off for Christmas... I was sure I read it was to with the general strike somewhere. Either way, the better song missed out.
December 15, 200717 yr Author I was sure I read it was to with the general strike somewhere. Either way, the better song missed out. Nothing to do with strike, technically they always use to omit a week during Christmas right up until 1986-ish I think
December 15, 200717 yr Technically this was actually John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War Is Over), but back then they didn't publish a Christmas week chart (it was just the same chart as the week before) and so it wasn't counted :( It`s true that HAPPY CHRISTMAS (WAR IS OVER) would have topped the chart, but in those days the charts changed on Tuesdays. John Lennon, would not have been the Christmas number one, however. If there had have been a chart with Lennon, at the top, it would have been announced on Tuesday 30th Dec 1980...so it did not affect the Christmas top 40. The first time, a chart was compiled in the new year period, was December/January 84/85...when BAND AID topped the chart for the first time, however that first new year chart, was ignored by Radio one, completely. Even on the following Sunday (6th Jan 1985) Richard Skinner, referered to "last weeks" positions of the 23rd Dec 1984. From Dec 1985, Radio One used the new year chart as well, but until 1987, it was never broadcasted in full. From December 1987, the charts were counted down on the Sunday, and the best selling singles of the year, were counted down, either on New Years Eve, or New Years Day. It was a 1971 postal strike, that meant that certain charts, that year were confined to a top 40 only, affecting postal returns. This did not have anything to do with the not compiling of a new year week chart, in any year at all. Edited December 15, 200717 yr by trevs

December 16, 200717 yr The 300,000 sale for 2 Become 1 was for its second week. Its first week sale, and the sale that gave it the Christmas #1, was 429,000. In case anyone wonders, its third week sale (and its last at #1) was 95,000. Edited December 16, 200717 yr by Robbie
