I doubt they'd feel the same if Leona was knocked off No 1 because McFly or Westlife released a double or triple A-Side where ALL the downloads counted towards their position :lol:

 

There would be choruses of "poor Leona :( " and a poll asking if McFly & Westlife's No 1 was fair :lol: :lol:

 

 

I have nothing against Leona - I'm thrilled she's doing so well, but I really doubt she cares whether she gets to No 1 in the singles chart, given the quantity of albums she's shifted - that's where the money is :lol:

Personally I've always thought Double A sides are a stupid single choice anyway even before downloads were even included.

Just to make it clear, this is not a slagging thread over a certain artist, its a report I found on a site which makes an interesting point of a chart rule over double A sided singles, by the looks of things I created a monster.

Duffy won fair and square. She is number 1 by selling one song. Leona shouldn't have an advantage by selling 2 and having them added together.

Of course it's fair Duffy won. The charts have to be a level playing field as much as possible, you can't have one artist promoting 2 songs, receiving 2 lots of airplay and that going towards one chart position, whilst other artists only have one song to promote/receive airplay for. The way they have dealt with it seems as fair as possible. Leona as well as radio/tv play for both songs also had two huge promotional appearances with BOTH songs on Dancing on Ice and Sports Relief, if the combined physical single and download of BIT couldn't get her to number 1 in the first week of physical release against a song that had been out for weeks already well that's just tough I'm afraid.

On another point it's a charity single but only some of the money goes to the charity - how much does anyone know? I thought I read 70p. However her album sales have increased so the main beneficiary could well be Simon Cowell and not Sports Relief.

As a Leona Fan.. yes she was beaten fairly! Its just bad luck! And shed did have the most advantage out of anyone for the week running up to the release... LOTS of promoting etc...

Surely if every artist started releasing double A sides it would go back to being fair? :lol: Everyone would have two songs to download, so no one would have an advantage, until triple A sides came along. :lol:

 

Personally I see this double A side rule as a little unfair, a double A side is comparable to an artist releasing 10 different live versions or remixes of their single to iTunes and letting their crazed fans download them all, which potentially increases the sales of that single up to 10 times. Didn't this happen with Wet Wet Wet?...and someone else? (McFly? Take That?) The only difference here is that the songs were actually different so that changes things.

Surely then to sumarise; the best way to make this fair is to do away with singles being released as a "physical" double A side, and just release 2 seperate CDs for each single so they can count towards seperate sales and not an overall sale.

 

I don't think the current rules are right, and I think the best way to settle things has to be the removal of the "AA rule" because with downloads in place, it seperate both singles into 2 categories, and therefore, sales should NOT be combined.

 

The only way this will work is if and when record companies withdraw from double A side singles, and then if they have 2 singles they want released - release 2 CD Singles.

Anyhoo, rules are clear and I think it's very fair. Duffy is the rightful winner.

I am a Leona fan and was hoping she would have her 3rd number 1 on Sunday. But I must take my hat off and congratulate Duffy for a 5th week at number 1. Duffy won fair and square and I think will be top for a 6th week. Nobody has pointed out that the CD was virtually a triple A side because I bought it, as I am sure others did, for the 3rd track, You Bring Me Down which is not on either version of the album.

Of course Duffy won fair and square. Double A sides will become extinct because of this-with downloads some people will buy one track and not the other like u have to with a CD so its not exactly fair that it should all count.

Enough of this love for Leona, a double A-side should'nt count in the charts as it is because its literally the sale of two songs which has far more appeal than 1 so its unfair, Duffy outsold her fair and square.

There wasn't downloads back then, it all changed with downloads, it's an unfair advantage now if they're added together.

Maybe they should change the downloads so you have to buy both of them at the same time, and not just one... like your actually buying the single. Stick it up at a slightly higher price and have both songs chart together in one position

That's not correct though. More people actually bought Leona's, roughly about 7,000 more infact.

of course Duffy won fair and square - in this age of digital releases - there's no such thing as a 'double-a' sided single - it's a ridiculous notion - and to count both tracks as one - preposterous. You can't have it both ways..
