Zavvi drop singles

Zavvi is to stop selling singles. The chain, which bought out Virgin last year, say they will only make exceptions for "event singles".

It looks like this will mark the doom of the physical, roll on The Track Chart from 2009 with albums tracks included

That would only happen on rare occasions still wouldn't it?

Anyway this was expected tbh, and i can't say im too bothered in all honesty :(

This just leaves HMV, and they will follow suit... soon, I think the physical single is on its way out, sooner than we think.

the Zavvi near me never did them anyway....our Woolworths still does
Physical singles are pretty outdated these days anyway - although their slump has been quite spectacular!

im bothered - as for one i like collecting seven inch vinyl singles and also a lot of the time it gives a spike to some indie acts that wouldnt get the spike in the chart they normally do - the chart is just normally whatever being played on radio 1, 2 or the hits to death.

however once they have got rid of the singles - the next to go will be most of the back cat that they cannot flog in their 3 for £20 offers - so it will just turn even more into one big mainstream supermarket.

sad

Zavvi are awful anyway...who would pay £5 for the maxi CD of Basshunter?

we've already nearly reached the point where physical singles are becoming pointless...Sugababes and Panic could even slide following their physical releases this week...

I've only bought 4 CD singles so far this year...in the previous years I would have bought at least 15 by the end of March

Well if the prices wern't so pathetic...

:o

To be honest I've seen it coming, once you bought the physical, you play it once or twice, than its shunted to the back of the cupboard, and with the digital age, people are adding them to their ipods.

We could be having the same conversation again next month when HMV announce their singles review.

I've stopped buying CD singles a lot time ago, the only time I buy CD singles is to keep my Kylie and Pet Shop Boys collection to date. I just buy 7inch vinyls now when they have limited or rare editions, for example coloured vinyls and picture discs.

HMV won't stop selling them yet, I don't think. My nearest stocks a huge variety of CD singles and vinyls, although admittedly that is in Manchester city centre.
You'll still be able to buy 7" and 12" singles from any decent music store. Zavvi aren't necessarily trading as a music store, more an overall entertainment place. But yes, I'd say it's the start of the death of the CD single.

The end of the single, was imminent unfortunately. Woolworths did announce that in most towns, they would no longer stock singles, from this month also. Zavvi follow, so the end is virtually here.

Historically, in March 1956, Melody Maker first published their Singles chart. In March 1958, the BBC increased their averaged singles chart, to a top 20. Also, in March 1978, Tom Browne quit the BBC sunday chart countdown. So, March is turning into a random Spring clean!

Is there a good side to the end of the single? Could mean the finish for, Westlife and the like, in never getting in the top 3, ever again!

That makes this news slightly easier to hear. It might mean Leona will be less successful though, which I wouldn't like to see.

I wonder if this will affect the X Factor winners chances of reaching #1 this year, or will that be classed as a "special occasion" where they will stock singles.

I was in HMV in Oxford Street the other day and they have a huge collection there of back catalogue singles as well as new releases...most branches now only sell new releases and perhaps 5 or 10 other singles...

The only singles I buy now are; Girls Aloud singles or singles where it is worths spending the money, for example I bought H 'Two' O as I wanted the video so on iTunes the vid is £1.89 or for £1.10 more I can have the video plus six tracks...

Aw this is terrible, i only ever download a track when im buying the cd single as well, ,like the recent westlife single i would have downloaded it too. But would always buy the cd when a single is released cause i like to have and feel as though i have acutally purchased something. Even though im against it i will only download illegally if the cd single is definitely finished.

this is getting stupid bring back physical buying i like downloads but their getting all messy this could mean loads of artists will flop more often and big star will start flopping its a joke really i you think about it :(

I rarely buy physicals but I do occasionaly go out and purchase them.
i think the 'singles chart' needs alot more rules to organise it alot more, as it looks like a big mess at the minute with all these old tracks etc.

Zavvi are focusing more on games and DVD's so it's not a huge surprise but still one less place to go to buy them :(

I only ever buy singles for Leona and Girls Aloud at the moment

I don't like downloads as you don't get artwork, and all the info on the tracks on the sleeve, no case to feel  etc.

I just wait for albums to come out, listen to a few samples on websites, then decide whether or not to take the plunge. Worked well for me the past few years  Think the last single I bought that wasn't Girls Aloud / Leona was Nelly Furtado - All Good Things Come To An End :o
