Barbados born, US based singer Robyn Rihanna Fenty, better known as Rihanna, has climbed a place to the top of the UK chart with her new single Take A Bow, replacing British duo The Ting Tings, although they have topped the album charts this week with their debut album We Started Nothing.

Take A Bow entered the charts on downloads last week for Rihanna at No.2 but inches up a place to the top spot this week. It is the second UK No.l for the singer who has finally reversed the No.2 curse that greeted her singles Pon De Replay, SOS and Unfaithful. Umbrella was Rihanna’s first UK No.1, exactly a year ago and it went on to spend ten weeks at the top of the chart throughout last summer and has sold almost 600,000 copies in the UK, and is therefore sure to go platinum in the near future. Take A Bow is one of a handful of new tracks to be taken from the forthcoming re-release of Rihanna’s former No.l album Good Girl Gone Bad and this will be the 4th UK top ten hit from the album after Umbrella, Shut Up & Drive and Don’t Stop The Music.

The Ting Tings, the pop indie duo that debuted at No.1 last week with That’s Not My Name, have become the first act of the year to spend only a week at the summit of the UK chart as they fall a place to No.2 this week. They can take consolation in the fact that their first single Great DJ, which was previously disqualified form the chart, enters for the first time this week at No.33 as a downloaded album track. With sales so close between the top two this week, do not rule out a return to the top for The Ting Tings in seven days time. Madonna and Justin Timberlake’s former No.1 single 4 Minutes is a non-mover at No.3 this week and has spent an impressive ten weeks in the top ten so far moving 7-5-8-4-1-1-1-1-3-3. In her amazing career, this is in fact the first time a Madonna single has ever managed ten weeks in the UK top ten.

Will.I.Am and Cheryl Cole’s duet Heartbreaker stays at No.4 for a third successive week, and has now spent five weeks in the top ten while Australian singer Sam Sparro’s former No.2 hit Black & Gold returns to the top five this week, back up a place from No.6. British rapper Wiley’s own former No.2 single Wearing My Rolex slides a place to No.6 this week and is now on its fifth week inside the UK top ten, moving 4-3-2-5-6 so far.

The sole new song in the top ten this week is Warwick Avenue by Welsh soul singer Duffy. Duffy’s last single Mercy is the biggest selling single of the year so far and has sold over 400,000 copies so far in the UK alone, and is currently huge worldwide. Duffy’s debut album Rockferry has been inside the UK top five since its release and has made an incredible debut at No.4 in the US this week. Warwick Avenue is up six places from No.13 to No.7 and is released physically on Monday. It should provide the singer with a second UK top five hit in seven days time. Usher’s Love In This Club is down a place at No.8 this week. The former US No.1 has been in the UK top ten for six weeks now.

Making an unexpected rebound, Sweden’s September is back up a place to No.9 with Cry For You, which is now spending its seventh week inside the UK top ten and has moved 9-5-5-6-7-10-9 so far. Coldplay round off the top ten with their comeback single Violet Hill. The single has had a less swift decline than expected, no doubt due to the addition of the video to music channels this week. The download only single has moved 8-8-10 on its three week’s on the chart so far, though would have undoubtedly done much better had it not been initially available to download for free for a week at the start of the month. This week’s UK top ten therefore features four British, a Barbadian, an Australian, a Swede, two American acts and one British/American collaboration.

American R&B star Ne-Yo’s debut single So Sick was a UK No.1 back in 2006 and since then he has had hits with Sexy Love, Because Of You and Hate That I Love You. Closer is the first single from Ne-Yo’s forthcoming new album Year Of The Gentleman and shoots up to No.12 this week on downloads alone. The song entered at No.22 two weeks ago before sliding to No.24 last week and its resurgence is due to the fact that the video has now been added to music channels. Closer’s prospects of being a future UK No.1 seem to be back on track. Nelly & Fergie’s now physically released single Party People jumps up only a couple of places this week to No.14, which is now likely to be the chart peak for the single which has moved 39-26-22-19-16-14 in its first six weeks inside the top forty.

American singer songwriter Sara Bareilles is still heading in the right direction with the former US top five hit Love Song. Still charting on downloads, the song now reaches the top twenty for the first time, moving up seven places to No.16 this week. The single is scheduled for a physical release on June 2nd where it will hope to match its airplay success, where it has already been one of the country’s five most played songs. Gabriella Cilmi is still climbing, albeit slowly, with Sweet About Me which now seems destined to be one of those big selling songs that never makes the top ten. Lonestar’s Amazed, Steps’ 5678 and Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black are further examples of these. Nevertheless, Gabriella is up another place to a new peak of No.18 this week.

Scouting For Girls and Chris Brown both move back up the chart with their current singles this week due to a lack of successful new releases. Heartbeat is back up three places to No.17 while With You is back up a place to No.20 from No.21 last week. Taio Cruz also continues to move in the right direction this week. His new single I Can Be, entered the top forty for the first time last week at No.30 and this week shoots up eleven places to No.19. The follow up to the top five hit Come On Girl, I Can Be is physically released on Monday, although its prospects of reaching the top ten are not looking great based on the tiny climb that physicals usually give to download hits in the current chart climate.

Danish pop band Alphabeat’s Fascination is a non-mover at No.22 this week and the follow up single, 10,000 Nights goes straight in at No.23 on downloads alone. Though perhaps not looking likely to give them a second UK top ten hit, as the single comes out physically on Monday, it bodes well for This Is Alphabeat, the debut album from the six-piece which is scheduled for release on June 2nd and is a reworked version of their self titled Danish debut album that came out in 2007. American singer Ashlee Simpson and British rock group Royworld benefit from their physical releases, albeit not enough to lift either of them into the top twenty. Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya) is up two places to a new peak of No.24, still Ashlee’s worst performing hit to date in the UK, while Dust is up six places to No.29 for Royworld.

A couple of indie comebacks from two of 2006’s biggest acts debut inside the top 30 this week. Scottish act The Fratellis return at No.27 with new single Mistress Mabel, their first top forty hit in the UK for fourteen months. The band’s biggest single to date is the anthemic Chelsea Dagger, a No.5 hit in 2006 while Whistle For The Choir also reached the top ten in the same year. Meanwhile, Liverpudlian act The Zutons are back at No.28 with Always Right Behind You, their comeback single. They are best known for the 2006 top ten single Valerie which has been more recently made into a huge hit by Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse. Both acts release these singles physically on Monday where both should move into the top twenty in seven days time.

Fall Out Boy’s Beat It continues to benefit from heavy video rotation despite being a download only release and climbs nine places to No.31 this week. As mentioned earlier, The Ting Tings debut at No.33 this week with Great DJ. It is a belated debut for a single that was disqualified earlier in the year when it had racked up enough sales to be a top twenty hit for the duo. iPod advert song and the duo’s next single, Shut Up and Let Me Go, makes it a third hit for Jules and Katie this week as it debuts inside the top fifty and is sure to progress in the near future.

Following in the footsteps of Utah Saints and Fragma, it’s the turn of Gusto’s 1996 No.9 hit Disco’s Revenge to get a 2008 remake this time. The remix has been done by Brighton duo Freemasons who have recently produced hits for Beyonce and Kelly Rowland as well as having their own top ten hit last year with the Alanis Morissette cover Uninvited. The single has not done quite as well as the other remakes and makes an appearance at No.34 this week after its physical release. Utah Saints have done incredibly well with Something Good 08, selling almost 150,000 copies so far. That single is back up two places to No.35 this week.

The most interesting entry of the week however has to go to German dance act Snap! who return at No.36 with the 1992 No.1 single Rhythm Is A Dancer. The song, which spent six weeks at the top of the UK chart sixteen years ago, is back because of its appearance in the current advert for Drench water which features Brain from Thunderbirds dancing to the track. Snap! had a successful series of re-releases in 2002 and 2003 where their singles Do You See The Light, Rhythm Is A Dancer and The Power all returned to the UK top forty in remixed form. This is however the first time that the song has returned to the UK chart in its original form since its original release. And finally for upward movement in the singles chart, Lil’ Wayne makes slow progress with the current US No.1 Lollipop which moves up a place to No.38 this week.

The album chart has a new victor this week once again as The Ting Tings debut album We Started Nothing goes straight in at No.1 pushing Neil Diamond down to No.2 after just a week in control. Duffy is back up a place to No.3 while Scooter are down one place to No.4. Pendulum’s In Silico drops three places from No.2 last week to round off the top five. British folk singer Beth Rowley’s debut album Little Dreamer makes an impressive chart entry at No.6 while Madonna slides to No.7 with Hard Candy. Neil Diamond makes it two in the ten as his Best Of collection debuts at No.8 this week while Cistercian Monks Chant score an unexpected debut at No.9 with Music For Paradise. Scouting For Girls slide three places with their eponymous debut album, a former UK No.1 which is down three places to No.10 this week.

Duffy will aim for a surprise second No.1 next week as Warwick Avenue finally receives its physical release. However, it looks as if the battle will once again be between Rihanna and The Ting Tings, and sales are so close between the two that it really could be either of them at the top in seven days time. There are notable physical releases due from Alphabeat, Flo Rida, The Fratellis, Go: Audio, Taio Cruz and The Zutons while American singer Kat DeLuna could well reach the top forty on download sales alone. Also watch out for possible download entries from American Idol winner David Cook and Greek Eurovision entrant Kalomira. The Ting Tings will hope to top the album chart for a second week but they will have to contend with expected big hitters from Usher and The Pigeon Detectives. Ashlee Simpson, The Futureheads, Sandi Thom and Kids In Glass Houses should all find themselves within the top 75 too this time next week.

It's this sort of info that makes me want to read the report.

Liking the 'back to the original format' too.

Thanks. Another great article.
