Posted August 10, 200816 yr Katy Perry’s US smash hit I Kissed A Girl has climbed three places from last week’s entry position of No.4 to claim the top spot in the UK charts. Kid Rock’s All Summer Long surrenders the top spot after just seven days, falling to No.2 while The Verve’s highly anticipated comeback single Love Is Noise has gone straight in at No.5 on download sales alone. The young American singer Katy Perry’s debut UK single still has a lot of time to grow as it was rush released to cope with increasing demand for the track last week. It debuted at No.4 after four days of download sales, but with her first full week of download sales, Katy jumps to the top of the chart to add to the ever growing list of acts that have topped the UK chart before receiving a physical release. The song is expected to stay at the top for quite a few weeks, with the physical single not due out until early next month. With the singer fresh in the minds of the buying public, it is rumoured that Katy’s record company are planning to move forward the release date of her album, One Of The Boys, to capitalise on the success of the single. Kid Rock therefore vacates the top spot with the infectious All Summer Long, which has now moved 6-3-2-1-2 on its first five weeks inside the top ten. Dizzee Rascal, Calvin Harris and Chrome continue to sell well but slide a further place to No.3 this week, after six weeks on the chart with the former No.1 single Dance Wiv Me. The Script slide a place to No.4 with their current single The Man Who Can’t Be Moved. The Irish trio release their eponymous debut album on Monday and look almost certain to have a top three success on their hands. The highest new entry this week goes to British indie/rock band The Verve. The Wigan band formed in 1989 and after ten years of success in the UK, they split in 1999. They are best remembered for their 1997 album Urban Hymns. The classic album spawned the hit singles Bitter Sweet Symphony, The Drugs Don’t Work and Lucky Man, all now hailed as modern day classics, and sold over three million copies, making it one of the UK’s twenty biggest selling albums of all time. Having announced last year that they were to reunited, The Verve’s comeback album Forth is due out later in the month, and the first single from it, Love Is Noise, makes a big impression on download sales alone, going straight in at No.5, surprisingly only the third top five hit of their career. Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown slide a place with No Air, down to No.6 this week followed by Noah & The Whale’s 5 Years Time, which climbs once again, this time as a result of its physical release. The London band’s chirpy summer song, featuring vocals from former band member and Mercury Music Prize nominated artist Laura Marling, has been inside the UK top forty for four weeks now, and No.7 is its new peak, having been at No.10 last week. The band’s debut album Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down, is released on Monday, where it is expected to challenge The Script for next week’s No.1 album. Ne-Yo’s former No.1 single Closer is down a couple of places to No.8 this week. The track is by far Ne-Yo’s biggest ever hit in the UK now, having spent eleven weeks in the top ten so far and selling well over quarter of a million copies. Rihanna’s album track Disturbia has still not been confirmed as an official single, but with the video now being shown on music channels, the song leaps into the top ten for the first time, climbing from last week’s No.34 to No.9 this week. Radio 1 has now given its support to the track, adding it to their C-List this week, which should aid its growth in the coming weeks. It is the eighth UK top ten hit of Rihanna’s career, and the fifth song from the Barbadian singer’s album, Good Girl Gone Bad Reloaded, to have reached the UK top ten, following Umbrella, Shut Up & Drive, Don’t Stop The Music and Take A Bow. Basshunter’s All I Ever Wanted, a former No.2 hit, rounds off the top ten this week, sliding a further three places to No.10. This week’s top ten therefore includes three British acts, four American acts, one Swede, one Barbadian and one Irish act. Outside the top ten, there are a few songs making their way up the chart. With the video now available, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, a former UK No.1 single, gets a second wind and climbs back up four places to No.14 this week. Norwegian rocker Ida Maria continues to progress with current single I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked, which is up another place to No.15 this week. Nelly, Akon & Ashanti have the next new entry to the top forty. The trio are in at No.23 this week with new collaboration Body On Me. All three acts have had huge hits in the UK before, Nelly having had No.1 singles with Dilemma, My Place/Flap Your Wings and Over & Over, as well as guesting on the 2006 Notorious BIG No.1 single Nasty Girl. Akon topped the UK charts with both Lonely and Smack That, while Ashanti guested on Ja Rule’s No.1 single Wonderful, and has had other solo top five hits, including Foolish and Only U. Body On Me is from Nelly’s current album and is the follow up to Party People, his last single which featured Fergie and peaked at No.14 earlier in the year. The trio have made a promising start on download sales, having entered at No.45 last week and therefore now jumping into the top forty for the first time. The single is due out on Monday and should jump into the top twenty next week. Having been properly made available again for 79p on iTunes and coinciding with the song’s parody on the current DFS advert, Nickelback’s Rockstar, a former No.2 single and one of 2008’s biggest selling hits, returns to the top forty in a sensational fashion this week, bouncing back from No.55 to No.27 and overtaking more recent single Photograph, which is down three places to No.29 this week. German Eurodance act Cascada have been one of the more surprising consistent hit makers over the last couple of years. As well as achieving UK top ten singles with Everytime We Touch, Truly Madly Deeply, Miracle and What Hurts The Most, the German trio, headed by British born singer Natalie Horler, have had two platinum selling top ten albums; Everytime We Touch – The Album and Perfect Day. The trio’s last single, What Do You Want From Me, failed to make a major impression when released earlier in the year and could only reach No.51 at its peak. New single Because The Night, a cover of the Patti Smith Group 1978 classic, jumps from No.51 on downloads to No.28 after its physical release. A surprise hit perhaps for two reasons; it is generally considered to be one of the album’s weaker tracks and German producer Jan Wayne already scored a top twenty hit with a similar sounding cover of the same song back in late 2002. There is a new dance hit entering at No.34 this week, on download sales alone. Spoon, Harris and Obernik are no strangers to chart success as individuals. Vocalist Sam Obernik guested on Tim Deluxe’s 2002 hit It Just Won’t Do and Linus Loves’ 2003 top forty hit Stand Back. Paul Harris is a member of British dance act Dirty Vegas who had considerable British and American success with the 2001 single Days Go By, which peaked at No.16 in the UK on its 2002 re-release. Dave Spoon reached the top forty last year with Lisa Maffia collaboration Bad Girl (At Night). The trio’s new collaboration, Badtitude, is out physically on Monday, and could well provide both Sam and Paul with their second top twenty hit in seven days time. The final new entry is It’s Not About You by Scouting For Girls which goes into the top forty at No.38 after its second physical release. It was originally the first hit single for the London pop-indie trio last June when it reached No.31. Should it follow the pattern of the hits that they have had since, the song could well continue to progress up the charts in the coming weeks. On yet another week of slim releases, the album chart sees little change, and Swedish quartet ABBA stay in control with their Gold – The Greatest Hits collection, which also topped the UK charts in 1992 and 1999. Duffy’s Rockferry has spent a sensational twenty three consecutive weeks in the top four now, ever since it was released, and goes back up to No.2 this week with the release of third single, Stepping Stone, imminent. Coldplay’s former No.1 album Viva La Vida Or Death & All His Friends therefore slides a spot to No.3 this week. Kid Rock stays at No.4 with Rock & Roll Jesus ahead of Sharleen Spiteri’s Melody, which is proving to be a rather unexpected success, moving back up two places to No.5 this week. The Ting Tings stay at No.6 with We Started Nothing and Basshunter is down two places to No.7 with Now You’re Gone – The Album. The Bachelors stay at No.8 with I Believe – The Very Best Of whilst Disturbia propels the Reloaded edition of Rihanna’s former No.1 album Good Girl Gone Bad back to the top ten. It climbs from No.11 to No.9 this week. Canadian rock act Nickelback stay put at No.10 with All The Right Reasons. Next week’s chart could see a battle of the formats. Katy Perry will hope to hold onto the top spot with I Kissed A Girl but with The Verve physically releasing Love Is Noise on Monday, they will hope to snatch the No.1 spot for a week, although their declining download sales are making this look unlikely. Kid Rock, The Script and Rihanna will be fighting for top five places whilst other notable physical releases are due from Bloc Party, The Cure, Go: Audio, Madcon, The Music, Nelly, Akon & Ashanti, The Ryes, Santogold, Solange and Spoon, Harris & Obernik. Download entries could be expected from Taio Cruz, Alphabeat and Little Jackie. The album chart should finally see some action next week as anticipated debut releases from The Script and Noah & The Whale should fight for the top spot as Abba, Duffy and Coldplay remain in the top five. Other albums that should make some sort of impact are due from The Levellers, Late Of The Pier, Hawthorne Heights, Jane McDonald and Fightstar.
August 10, 200816 yr Another great read, but I still got a strong feeling in the back of my head, The Verve will bag a week at #1 next week.

August 10, 200816 yr Author really :o I just can't see the physical selling that well... I think The Verve will reach No.2 at the highest...I actually don't mind the song, it's a good comeback
August 11, 200816 yr Yeah the Verve will probably only make number 2 now (Thank god :heehee:) But Rihanna will definately go top 5 next week i reckon we could be saying bye to Dizzee more than the Script inside the top 5 next week. and The Script will probably be helped with their Album being released :cheer: Ive heard a few tracks already and im impressed ^_^ Great read Rich ^_^
August 11, 200816 yr Sadly I think The Verve could well be a non mover next week now, in fact I think there's a decent chance we'll see a completely static top6/7.
