The Verve aiming to give metal band the slip

11:01 | Tuesday August 26, 2008

By Paul Williams

The Verve’s first new studio album in more than a decade is in a two-way battle with Slipknot to replace Phonogenic/RCA’s The Script at number one this coming weekend.

The Parlophone-issued Forth is presently little more than 2,000 sales ahead of Roadrunner act Slipknot’s All Hope Is Gone in what is shaping up to be a busy week for new albums with seven releases battling to debut inside the Top 10.

Fellow Roadrunner act Dragonforce are Top 10 possibilities with the newly-issued Ultra Beatdown, while Top 10 entries could also come from the late Eva Cassidy with posthumous Blix Street-issued album Somewhere, Blue Thumb/Universal Classics’ Teddy Thompson, Geffen/Polydor’s The Game and Michael Jackson with a new Sony BMG compilation, King Of Pop.

On the singles chart Eric Prydz is poised to claim a third top-three hit with the Data-issued Pjanoo, set to be the chart’s highest new entry this coming weekend. It is his first chart action since his Pink Floyd-sampling Proper Education reached number two in January last year.

Despite Prydz’ strong start, Virgin’s Katy Perry looks like extending her run at number one with I Kissed A Girl to four weeks. Phonogenic/RCA’s The Script, who finished runners-up on last Sunday’s chart with The Man Who Can’t Be Moved, are losing ground, leaving Def Jam/Mercury’s Rihanna and Prydz to battle it out for the number two spot on the forthcoming chart.

Columbia signings Glasvegas are challenging for a Top 10 debut with Daddy’s Gone, while Paul Weller should add to his Top 20 hits with his latest Island single All I Wanna Do/Push It Along.

Vertigo/Mercury’s Metallica are expected to claim their first Top 20 hit in nearly five years with The Day That Never Comes on course for a double-digit climb from its debut position of 36. It could be joined in the Top 40 by their 1992 hit Nothing Else Matters, which re-entered at 53 last Sunday and is making rapid progress this week.

I think the Top 5 will look something like this today:

1 - Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl

2 - The Script - The Man Who Can't be Assed to Moved

3 - Rihanna - Disturbia

4 - Kid Rock - All Summer Long

5 - Biffy Clyro - Mountains

Eric Prydz will not be Top 3/5 until tomorrow's update i think. It was only last night he was at number 2 in the iTunes chart but he could be at like 8 or 9 today with the sales of the last day or so. Unless Biffy are Top 3 on physicals I can't see them over taking Kid Rock until next week. And i must say 'Mountains' gets better when it's been given a few more listens :o

Glasvegas a Surprise Top 15 hit??

Edited by Johnjo07

I'm very pleased for Biffy :D I think they're gonna start off at #2 but will end at about #5 probably fall behind Rihanna, Script and Prydz as the week goes on.

I think only Glasvegas and Paul Weller will be new to the top 40 - maybe that Miley Cyrus creature and I can see the hideous American Boy re-entering as well :(

The Verve easily for the albums though I'm unsure about Jacko and Eva Cassidy's new ones - could go either way but The Automatic should easily be top 10 and Slipknot top 5.

I am predicting the following;

1 Katy Perry I kissed a girl

2 Eric Prydz Pyanno

3 The Script The man who cant be moved

4 Rihanna Disturbia

5 Biffi Cyro

20 Alphabeat Boyfriend

Katy Perry for a fourth week  mind you her download sales are falling a tad each week, it will finally get a physical release next week, I don't think she gain much more sales once its physically release,

with Rihanna banging on her front door

Is that a euphemism, given the nature of the song? :naughty:

Unless Biffy are Top 3 on physicals I can't see them over taking Kid Rock until next week. And i must say 'Mountains' gets better when it's been given a few more listens :o

Glad you've finally seen sense :D

It was pretty much instant for me, but then again, I'm a big Biffy fan, so it would be really! :P

I pretty much agree with those predictions as well. I hope Glasvegas can go top 15 - When Geraldine was released, it was top10 in the first mids, so this could do the same. (hopefully) -_-

MTop 40 in for today, Verve #1 in the albums, and Pjanno at #2

give me 10- 15 mins to edit

Glasvegas have such a big following in Scotland so that would probably get them Top 20 alone, I really hope they can be big. They do seem they could be the next Arctic Monkeys (in terms of success to me).

Pjanoo at #2 already? :o

That's bloody amazing! :cheer:

Yay Glasvegas top 10! :D

The Automatic only top 40 in the albums though? :o :(

Automatic are top 40 in the albums :o :o woah it seems their gonna flop something aren't they.

5 New entries to so i'll clear out alot won't it :D

Pjanoo at #2 already?   Theres no lyrics <_<
