Posted August 31, 200816 yr American rising star Katy Perry’s controversial pop anthem I Kissed A Girl has proved its worth by staying at No.1 in the UK for a fourth week, holding off a strong challenge from Swedish dance artist Eric Prydz who goes straight in at No.2 with the instrumental track Pjanoo. Rihanna completes the top three, climbing a place to No.3 with Disturbia. Katy Perry’s worldwide smash hit I Kissed A Girl has now spent four weeks at the top of the UK charts, having debuted at No.4 on its first week before rising to No.1 where it has been ever since. It should be further boosted next week as the physical release of the song finally arrives on Monday. Katy’s album One Of The Boys, a top ten success in her native America, will somewhat belatedly arrive on these shores towards the end of September, although import copies of the album have proved popular enough to propel the album into low end of the UK album chart. Katy looks set to shake off any notions that she might be a one hit wonder in the US as second single Hot ‘N’ Cold is currently rising up the iTunes chart there. Another pure pop single, whether it can provide the singer with a second hit here will be determined later on in the year when she will presumably release it on these shores. Sweden has been something of a haven for chart topping music in the last year or so. Along with the huge recent album success of ABBA and Basshunter, a large number of Swedish acts have reached the upper echelons of the UK singles chart including the aforementioned Basshunter, Robyn, Axwell, Peter, Bjorn & John and September. Swedish DJ and producer Eric Prydz is the latest Swede to have a hit this year as new single Pjanoo storms in at No.2 on download sales alone. Prydz is of course no stranger to UK chart success. His 2004 single Call On Me reached No.1 for five weeks across two separate runs while its 2007 follow up Proper Education was a No.2 success. Pjanoo is a perhaps slightly more unexpected success than those two singles, considering it does not use any samples and is not a cover; it is in fact an instrumental track. The buzz around this song, led by an infectious piano melody, has been building throughout the year, and despite calls to add lyrics to the track to make it more radio friendly, Eric has put the track out as an instrumental and proves his doubters wrong as it arguably looks set to become one of the biggest dance hits of the year. Instrumental hit singles are few and far between in the UK these days, although even five to ten years ago there were a lot of successful dance instrumentals in the charts from acts such as Darude, PPK, BBE, Chicane, Minimalistix and Energy 52. Completing a download only top three is Rihanna’s new single Disturbia. Now finally scheduled for a physical UK release on September 22nd, it is Rihanna’s seventh chart hit from her current album Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded. Should it peak here, it will be Rihanna’s first No.3 hit. She has already had two No.1 hits and three No.2 singles in the UK, so this is the Barbadian singer’s sixth top three hit in total. This completely disproves the theory that acts can only score one or two big hits per album these days. Clearly determined to become a superstar, the young singer has now become a household name worldwide in just over three years, and even in the days when it was easier to score multiple hits from the same album, to have achieved five top five singles from an album that is close to a million sales itself is a highly impressive feat. Since the release of Umbrella just fifteen months ago, the star has spent 41 weeks in the UK top ten with those five singles and Disturbia is bound to take that total close to fifty in the coming weeks. Irish trio The Script are pushed down two places to No.4 with The Man Who Can’t Be Moved, which has now spent five weeks inside the UK top five, moving 3-4-3-2-4 in the past five weeks. Having debuted at No.10 last week to score their first ever UK top ten single, Scottish rock trio Biffy Clyro jump to No.5 this week following the physical release of non-album track Mountains. The anthemic song has won them a host of new fans to add to the loyal fanbase that they have been gradually building up over much of the decade. American rock singer Kid Rock slides three places to No.6 this week with the former No.1 single All Summer Long. The song, which has been a huge hit across the world, is still yet to do much in the US as the singer refuses to allow his music to be added to US iTunes despite being available on other iTunes services across the world. Therefore the song has only peaked at No.25 in the US so far, based on its airplay success. A karaoke version of the song however, by Hit Masters, has been benefitting from Kid Rock’s mad decision and has reached the Billboard top twenty this week at No.19 based solely on the strength of its iTunes download sales. Norwegian rap duo Madcon slide back to their entering position of No.7 this week having climbed to No.5 last week with their Frankie Valli cover Beggin’. It is the third week inside the top ten for the single. Dizzee Rascal, Calvin Harris and Chrome have been in the UK top ten for nine weeks now, the first four of those at No.1, but refuse to fall quickly and slide just two places to No.8 this week. Reunited Wigan rock band The Verve spend a fourth week inside the top ten with comeback single Love Is Noise which is down two places to No.9 this week. Benefitting from a hugely slowed down chart since they were last having hit singles, this is only their second single to spend a month in the top ten, the other being the 1997 No.1 single The Drugs Don’t Work, which moved 1-3-4-10 on its first four chart weeks. Love Is Noise has gone 5-4-7-9 so far in comparison. Rounding off the top ten is London based folk-indie act Noah & The Whale, with current single 5 Years Time which moves down two places to No.10 after seven weeks inside the top forty, five of those inside the top ten. The incredibly international UK top ten this week therefore includes four Brits, two Americans, a Barbadian, an Irish act, a Norwegian act and a Swede with the top five featuring acts from five different countries. In a more interesting chart than what we have become used to in recent times, there is plenty of action outside the top ten too. This week’s second highest new entry goes to hyped Scottish rockers Glasvegas. The quartet have been together since 2006 but their first taste of singles chart success came earlier in the year with the No.16 hit Geraldine. Daddy’s Gone was released as a limited edition 7” single last year and NME called it their second best single of the year. It becomes their biggest UK hit to date, going in at No.12 on its first week, and bodes well for the release of their debut eponymous album, due out on September 8th. US Soul duo Little Jackie’s debut UK single The World Should Revolve Around Me was physically released this week and duly climbs seven places into the top twenty for the first time, up to No.14 this week. Their debut album, The Stoop, is due out on Monday. Danish pop band Alphabeat have had a successful first year in the UK. Their first single, Fascination, peaked at No.6 is certain to go silver, having sold almost 200,000 copies so far this year. Follow up single 10,000 Nights went to No.16 and spent eleven weeks in the top forty. The band’s debut album This Is Alphabeat also reached the top ten. Third single Boyfriend entered at No.35 last week and after its physical release the song shoots into the top twenty this week, soaring to No.15. Moving back up the chart this week is Madonna. The superstar, who recently turned fifty, kicked off her ‘Sticky and Sweet’ tour last week and current single Give It 2 Me benefits, moving back up five places to No.18 on its twelfth week inside the top forty. American metal band Metallica made their return to the UK chart last week at No.36 with new single The Day That Never Comes. That release jumps into the top twenty this week, climbing to No.19 solely from download sales. The last Metallica single to start its chart career lower than its peak position was their 1993 No.20 hit Sad But True, which had debuted at No.21 the week earlier. Their last UK top twenty hit was their 2003 No.16 hit Frantic. Their biggest UK hits have been the classic singles Enter Sandman (No.5 in 1991) and Nothing Else Matters (No.6 in 1992), both of which returned to the UK top 75 last week. US singer Miley Cyrus is an absolutely huge star in her home country and is best known in the UK for playing the Disney character Hannah Montana. Fifteen year old Miley, born with the name Destiny Hope Cyrus and daughter of country star Billy Ray Cyrus, has made her first UK chart appearance this week. See You Again reached the top ten in the US and makes its UK top forty debut at No.23 following its physical release, climbing from No.54 last week. Though a hugely popular song, American Disney related singles seem to be unable to quite echo their chart topping US success in the UK. Only the first High School Musical related single, Breaking Free, could make the top ten here, while subsequent related tracks ended up at much lower positions. Teen duo Aly & AJ’s Potential Break Up Song could only reach No.22 last year whilst pop/rock trio Jonas Brothers, one of whom Miley used to date, failed to make the top ten with debut UK single SOS, though they will be hoping for more success with forthcoming new single Burnin’ Up. Paul Weller, former Jam and Style Council singer made a triumphant return to the UK charts earlier in the year when new album 22 Dreams went in at No.1. The first single from that album, Have You Made Up Your Mind/Echoes Round The Sun, was a No.19 success and new single All I Wanna Do/Push It Along goes in at No.28 this week. The final new entry to the top forty comes from American singer Ne-Yo. The follow up to his No.1 single Closer, one of the year’s biggest selling hits, Miss Independent, unrelated to the Kelly Clarkson single, is the second single to be taken from upcoming new album Year Of The Gentleman. The single goes in at No.39 for Ne-Yo but is sure to go far higher in the coming weeks. Closer was one of the year’s slow burners having debuted at No.22 on its first week and not reaching No.1 until its eight week inside the chart. That single is still inside the top twenty after fifteen weeks, falling four places to No.16 this week. Miss Independent is Ne-Yo’s sixth UK top forty hit and is scheduled for a physical release on September 29th, two weeks after the album is due out. The album chart is also home to some much needed excitement this week with six new entries inside the top ten. Reunited rock superstars The Verve as expected go straight in at No.1 with comeback album Forth, the belated follow up to the multi million selling 1997 classic album Urban Hymns. US rockers Slipknot go straight in at No.2 with their highly anticipated new album All Hope Is Gone. Irish trio The Script slide to No.3 with last week’s No.1 album, their eponymous debut. American folk singer Eva Cassidy died from cancer in 1996 but didn’t have mainstream success until 2001 when a BBC screening of her cover of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ made her a household name. Her albums Songbird, Imagine and American Tune all topped the UK chart. Somewhere, another posthumous album debuts this week at No.4. Michael Jackson’s new hits collection King Of Pop goes in at No.5 to coincide with the legendary singer’s 50th birthday. ABBA’s Gold drops to No.6 this week whilst Duffy’s Rockferry finally leaves the top five, sliding from No.3 to No.7 on its 26th week out. Coldplay’s former No.1 album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends dips to No.8 this week whilst US rapper The Game goes in at No.9 with new album L.A.X. British singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson rounds off the top ten with A Piece Of What You Need which goes straight in at No.10 this week. Next week’s chart could be very interesting as this week’s current top two singles from Katy Perry and Eric Prydz both receive their physical release. Although Katy has a small download advantage at the moment, dance singles generally tend to sell well physically, which could boost Eric’s single. Katy could become the third act of the year to score a fifth week at No.1, following Duffy and Basshunter, or Eric Prydz could score his second UK No.1 single, and become the third Swede in the past twelve months to top the UK chart, following Robyn and Basshunter. Rihanna, The Script and Biffy Clyro and should continue to hang around at the top end of the chart whilst the highest new entry should come from the highly anticipated comeback from US girl group Pussycat Dolls. When I Grow Up should easily become their sixth top ten hit when released, potentially a top three entry this time next week. Other notable new physical releases due out on Monday come from Bryn Christopher, Duffy, Infadels, Jason Mraz and New Kids On The Block whilst Just Stand Up. Cookie Jar, the new single from US band Gym Class Heroes, and a Various Artists single featuring vocals from Mariah Carey, Leona Lewis, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Sheryl Crow, Fergie, Mary J. Blige and Natasha Bedingfield amongst a host of others, could make a download only impact too in seven days time. The album chart should see The Verve retain their place at the top for a second week. New releases that should make some sort of chart impact next week are due from Motorhead, Miley Cyrus, Brian Wilson, Chemical Brothers, Roots Manuva and New Kids On The Block.
