September 15, 200816 yr So many but definately Take that - rule the world GA - call the shots Sugababes - easy Coldplay - speed of sound Leona - better in time
September 15, 200816 yr Yep, Beware Of The Dog definitely had US hit potential. Shame her label never saw it that way. And now Hilary Duff's new song Reach Out is getting a US release and it also samples Personal Jesus :heehee:
September 16, 200816 yr I must be the only person on BJ who actually loves that song. I much prefer it to the original ... you have to have images of Donny Darko running through your head to fully appreciate it though! And I'm a sucker for a man in a rabbit suit! So for me ... it was a well-deserved number 1. Norma No, I've fallen in love with it, more so than at the time of it's actual release. It was only after Christmas '03 and the hype had died down that I really began to see what a great track it was. I was also quite certain Jakatta's 'American Dream' would make it in early 2001. IF ONLY :( All Saints, had a couple of No.7 hits, War Of Nerves and All Hooked Up, surely they must have been expected to get to No.1, but I can't remember exactly... and of course Hear'Say's Everybody in late 2001, it was a big shock when that only got to No.4! To be fair, War Of Nerves was the 5th track of a year-old album. GORGEOUS though. And Everybody was pants, hence the flop.
September 16, 200816 yr So many but definately GA - call the shots Sugababes - easy Leona - better in time I so agree on the last two. Easy is a classic i was distraught that they didn't perform it on the Change tour. *puts easy on* Better in time is by far Leona's best song. i can't remember who robbed her, but whatever it was, was a far worse song (unless it was mercy :kink:) The top one however didn't deserve to chart. f***ing awful song in my opinion. SKO & Biology however should have made it. They are the only songs IMO worthy of #1 by them
September 16, 200816 yr Better in time is by far Leona's best song. i can't remember who robbed her, but whatever it was, was a far worse song (unless it was mercy :kink:) I think ut was... but it could have been Estelle...
September 16, 200816 yr It was Mercy that stopped Better In Time/Footprints getting to #1. It sold 302 copies more, so close!
September 16, 200816 yr Free As A Bird - The Beatles Wonderwall - Mike Flowers Pops (Both kept off by Earth Song by Michael Jackson) Signs - Snoop Dogg (kept off by Tony Christie) Some people tipped the following for Christmas No1's Cruise Into Christmas - Jane McDonald (Her first album went to No1 so her first single was expected to do the same) Yo Yo Boy - Alberta (Yo Yo's were supposed to be big in 1998) I Kiss You - Mahir (Supposed to have had a lot of hits on the internet but didn't have a hit in the chart) Love Oh Love - Lionel Richie (On ITV's Chart Show they said Possible Christmas No1) Some others from the 1980's Answers To Nothing - Midge Ure (a clip on Radio Rewind has Peter Powell saying this) Love Like A River - Climie Fisher (on Christmas TOTP 1988 one of them said with your help we can get our first No1)
September 16, 200816 yr Pink - Dear Mr. President Nickelback - If Everyone Cared Should've both been #1s but never saw the light of day in the UK Edited September 16, 200816 yr by Euro Music
September 16, 200816 yr I was suprised that Alex Parks debut single 'Maybe That's What It Takes' didn't make #1. It was a big week Alex Parks vs. Girls Aloud vs. Westlife Westlife had flopped with Hey Whatever about 2 months before so I was convinced they wouldn't make #1. Of course I was wrong. I had always expected Song 4 Mutya to be number 1 but despite strong radio and TV airplay no-one seemed to care. The same can be said for Beware Of The Dog and Single. The one which shocked me the most in recent years was Sunshine by Gareth Gates. I didn't even consider for a moment that it wouldn't go to number 1. As far as Gareth Gates songs go, it's actually quite good.
September 16, 200816 yr Headlines - Spice Girls (first single for ages and for Children In Need) I've Got You - Martine McCutcheon (Debut made No1 and this was expected to do the same) Edited September 16, 200816 yr by frank james
September 16, 200816 yr And Everybody was pants, hence the flop. most of 2001 & 2002's No.1's were pants, you didn't need to be good to get to No.1 back then
September 16, 200816 yr Oh, i agree about Song 4 Mutya. After Real Girl made #2, i was convinced that it would get to #1.
September 16, 200816 yr I was very surprised Real Girl made the top three, I thought it was heading for middlish top ten...Song 4 Mutya was a criminal flop, one of my 3 best songs of 2007...I suppose that awful video didn't help
September 16, 200816 yr The video was beyond c**p. I was in love with Real Girl, but kind of annoyed with it as well as it got pushed from February to April to End of May.
September 16, 200816 yr Oh god, the Song 4 Mutya video was horrific. Didnt expect Real Girl to as well as it did.
September 16, 200816 yr i expected the album to do much better than it did. Its a shame because it was a very good album
September 16, 200816 yr Oasis - Stand by me in 1997 was a dead cert for #1 untill Elton john "candle in the wind" was released after dianas death. Oasis - songbird in 2003 was #1 all the way in midweeks by a few thousand but saturday sales were a disadvantage for oasis... they ended up #3. Edited September 16, 200816 yr by Jez
September 16, 200816 yr Author people, this is about songs that were expected to be #1s, not what you think should've been #1s.
