Posted September 23, 200817 yr Kings Of Leon dominating albums market by nearly eight to one 11:13 | Tuesday September 23, 2008 Source: MW By Paul Williams Kings Of Leon’s Only By The Night has claimed an early runaway lead in the albums market this week, presently outselling nearest rival Rihanna by nearly eight units to one. The Hand Me Down/Columbia band’s latest albums success comes as their single Sex On Fire looks likely to spend a third week at the top of the UK singles chart this coming Sunday. The new album opened day one with sales of nearly 80,000 units. Only By The Night’s expected debut at one will lead another busy week of new entries on the artist albums chart with the Kings Of Leon set expected to be joined by at least three other new entries in the Top 10: Radio Active, McFly’s first album on their Super label, Interscope/Polydor-signed Pussycat Dolls’ Doll Domination and David Gilmour’s EMI-issued Live In Gdansk. A new Rhino Bette Midler retrospective, The Best, is also a contender for the Top 10, while Virgin’s Katy Perry is also looking to move into the 10 with One Of The Boys, having charted at 153 last Sunday. The current number one, Vertigo/Mercury act Metallica's Death Magnetic, is set to slip out of the top five. A busy week for new releases is apparent further down the rankings, with new entries on the albums chart also expected to come from artists including Wall of Sound-signed Mogwai, 4AD’s TV On The Radio, Modular’s Ladyhawke and Jackson Browne, who is now signed to Inside Recordings. The power of X Factor is evident on the singles chart where Faith Hill’s There You’ll Be There, which originally reached number three in June 2001, is presently standing at five in the midweeks after the song was performed by contestant Amy Connelly on the ITV programme. Connelly’s rendition brought X Factor judge Cheryl Cole to tears. Mercury act Iglu & Hartley, who performed on Jonathan Ross’s BBC1 chat show last Friday, are set to move from 14 into the Top 10 with their single In This City, while Arista/RCA’s Jennifer Hudson is also likely to move into the Top 10 with Spotlight. The release sat at 15 on last Sunday’s chart. Lead-off singles from two of quarter four’s key new albums are expected to figure as new entries in the Top 10 this Sunday with Sugababes’ Girls (Island) presently just ahead of Polydor’s James Morrison with You Make It Real on sales. Fiction/Polydor act White Lies are poised to enter the Top 40 with Death, while Jack White and Alicia Keys’ J-issued Bond pairing Another Way To Die is hovering just outside the 40 at present. ==================================== Singles 01 Kings Of Leon 14.9k 02 Katy Perry 8.3k (120 copies ahead) 03 Rihanna 8.2k 04 Pussycat Dolls 8k 05 Faith Hill 6.4k Top 10 Iglu & Hartly Ne'Yo 09 Will Young Jennifer Hudson Top 15 Kanye West 15 Sugababes Top 20 Flobots James Morrison 18 MIA Top 30 Dema Lovato/Joe Jonas* Top 40 Jay-Z White Lies Jonas Bros - Play My Music* Fall Out Boy Top 50 Jack White & Alicia Keys Cliff Richard Kings Of Leon - Frontier City Top 60 Jonas Brothers - Burnin' Up Joe Jonas - Gotta Find You* Jordin Sparks - Tattoo Leon Jackson Top 70 Avenue Michelle Williams Bette Midler - Wind Beneath My Wings Sharon Shannon & Steve Earle Cast Of Camp Rock - We Rock Ironik Top 80 The Source MGMT Top 90 Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody John Legend Top 100 Katy Perry - Hot N Cold Jordin Francis - Hasta La Vista* Top 120 St. Etienne - Burnt Out Car * A/T - Album tracks from the Camp Rock Soundtrack Album =========================================== Albums 01 Kings Of Leon 79.6k 02 Rihanna 10.6k 03 McFly 10.4k 04 Pussycat Dolls 10k 05 Duffy 8.9k Top 10 David Gilmour 10 Katy Perry Top 15 Bette Midler Top 20 Mogwai Top 30 Will Martin TV On The Radio Top 40 Ladyhawke Jackson Browne Michael Buble (Spec. September 23, 200817 yr Will Young top3? :o Err it will be struggling to stay in the top10 this week imo. With downloads on the wane and physical sales unlikely to be particularly stellar I think his chart position will fall somewhat short of expectations. My predictions for todays mids: 1. Kings Of Leon 2. Katy Perry 3. Rihanna 4. Pussycat Dolls 5. Iglu & Hartly 1. Kings Of Leon 2. Rihanna 3. Metallica 4. McFly 5. PCD
September 23, 200817 yr This week the chart will be quiet imo. I can see only Will Young troubling the top 5. I'm not counting out him because he has a strong fanbase who will buy the physical single. Lets wait and see, I'm excited because Changes is a very good track! Iglu And Hartly will climb into the top 10 too and Faith Hill could land in the top 10 with There You'll Be. I'm guessing James Morrison will be just outside the top 10, together with Flobots. And seeing how slowly the Sugababes are climbing on iTunes, I think they will just miss the top 10 on downloads alone. Pink will be available only from Friday to download so I think she will have to settle for a top 40 placing (maybe top 30 if lucky).
September 23, 200817 yr Id like Kings Of Leon to do the double number 1,,my other hopes are Iglu and Hartley will climb into the top 10 and id be happy to see Faith Hill go top 10 also as its a brilliant and underrated song.. Id also be happy to see Take That hold top 40 with rule the world
September 23, 200817 yr Id also be happy to see Take That hold top 40 with rule the world I think top 60 at most is more realistic Pete. It has already dropped into the 60's on iTunes. Norma
September 23, 200817 yr I think Will Young's physical sales will be stellar. Not quite McFly-sized, but he has a good following (right back from his Pop Idol days) and that's unlikely to have waned much as he's only been away a couple of years. I'd be astonished if he didn't make top 10! I think he'll end up around #5, although I wouldn't be surprised if he debuted higher.
September 23, 200817 yr I went shopping yesterday and neither HMV of Zavvi had any Will Young singles in stock, so either they had all sold out by 1pm or they weren't delievered  They had a space ready for where they should be there just wasn't any there :( I won't be able to buy my copy until next week now unless i order it online. Anybody else have this problem??? I think Katy Perrys album will do well - it's only 6.97 in Sainsburys. Not too sure about PCD. Maybe #4. I bought it yesterday and it's really long - 18 tracks i think. On first listen it's nowhere near as good as PCD. I'll keep listening though :P Edited September 23, 200817 yr by Glyn
Amazon have sold out and are waiting for new stock so that only leaves HMV to order from at the mo, which I did last night as I can't get into town this week. The general concensus is that Will is probably now established as an album artist, so It's next week that's going to be important for him. I hope Changes has done it's job to that end, topping the airplay chart isn't bad for starters ;)
September 23, 200817 yr Author James Morrison could go either way at the moment, I can't see him on the iTunes chart, he will have to rely on the physical format more than anything.
September 23, 200817 yr James Morrison could go either way at the moment, I can't see him on the iTunes chart, he will have to rely on the physical format more than anything. James is No.12 on iTunes!

September 23, 200817 yr Author He's at #12 on iTunes  I must have missed him, I'm not wide awake at the moment -_-
September 23, 200817 yr Yay for Ladyhawke being Top 40!! And where are McFly on the singles chart please?!
September 23, 200817 yr Wasn't expecting McFly top 5 - surely thats good when 300,000 have the majority of the songs free?
September 23, 200817 yr Conversely James Morrison not doing too great considering his physical is out and his itunes position... perhaps that will take more effect as the week progresses..
September 23, 200817 yr WOO HOO!! For Faith Hill being #5! That is brilliant! It could go up as well - Radio 2 have just played it so if they start playing it alot as well, its gonna be great for the song!
