Posted September 25, 200816 yr looking at today's midweek chart, it seems that the top ten is overrun with US acts and of course Rihanna, who lets face it, is part of the furniture of the UK top ten these days...looking at this year's top 20 YTD chart, there are only five songs which are entirely British 1 1 Duffy Mercy 493330 8 8 Dizzee Rascal Dance wiv me 325500 14 13 Adele Chasing pavements 273000 15 15 Ting Tings That's not my name 268350 17 17 H Two O feat Platnum What's it gonna be? 248000 Estelle's song would have been arguably worse off without the help of American rapper Kanye West, whilst Heartbreaker is another US/UK duet... so Duffy, Adele and The Ting Tings, all hyped new acts, have had big hits, as well as dance songs from Dizzee Rascal and H 'Two' O... Dizzee Rascal is the only already established British act to have had a major hit single this year...what can this tell us about the British music industry in 2008? and can it get better in the final 3 months of the year? Discuss.
September 25, 200816 yr Hmm I can't really see it getting much better apart from the X Factor winner will probably be British and make an appearance. I think Leona, Girls Aloud, Leon or Sugababes could end up in the end of year top 40 but top 20 may be unlikely.
September 25, 200816 yr Author it's a real shame, besides Duffy all of the new British acts haven't been as good as their hype, and all of the established acts (Kooks, Feeling, Oasis) have come back with completely sub standard material (in my opinion) Coldplay have done well of course, but surely they are in a different league to everyone else, they could release any sort of album and it would be a guaranteed No.1
September 25, 200816 yr Hmmm, sales-wise British acts are doing awfully, but I\'d disagree that it\'s reflective of poor quality - some of the best songs of the year are from British artists, such as Goldfrapp\'s A&E, Portishead\'s The Rip, Little Boots\' Meddle (also possibly M.I.A. - Paper Planes, but I count that as 2007 :smoke:). The problem is more due to the frankly boring nature of the charts which are hideously influenced by radio playlists which are all too happy to just take in songs from abroad...no bad thing, but the fact that these songs spend aeons in the charts due to the boring playlists is :(
September 25, 200816 yr Author very good point, the good British music is ignored in favour of average American music, why!?! I liked Apologize at the time but if I hear it again I'll throw my radio out of the car window  How I long to hear Little Boots and Untouched on the radio in place of constant American mediocrity
September 25, 200816 yr Explains precisely why I don't care for the charts because it's full of insipid corporate American R&B! I wish it would all DIE!
September 25, 200816 yr I don't think we've done that bad really. Not a lot of acts have done that well really, look at American acts too. Singles wise, well yeah we've not done too well, but do many British based record companies care about singles that much really? You only have to look at how many acts (British especially) are giving singles away for free. Albums wise it's been pretty good. Oasis' album will sell pretty well, Coldplay's sold a lot, so has Duffy. Then you've got a lot of established acts such as Kaiser Cheifs, Snow Patrol, Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Razorlight etc. all coming back with albums later this year. American culture has a lot of influence over British culture too. Indie acts like The Killers and Kings of Leon are manufactured for the British audience, and even if they are American acts, their target audience is the British audience really. Mainstream wise, Britain is non-existant in the Urban genre pretty much, and that's a popular genre of music at the moment.
September 25, 200816 yr Author British music is doing well everywhere but Britain in the singles charts around the world it would seem :(
September 25, 200816 yr I've honestly just stoped caring about the UK charts anymore. They are in such a state at the moment.
September 25, 200816 yr Sales wise its rather c**p but despite competition from Scandanavia, Holland and Australia i still think the UK is the best country for music in the world. Though it might be a bit bias because obviously we get to hear ALL of the British acts but not all of the foreign ones.
September 25, 200816 yr British music is doing well everywhere but Britain in the singles charts around the world it would seem :( Like Amy Macdonald's single "This Is The Life" seems to be doing well in Europe randomly. It's gone to #1 in Belgium and the Netherlands and top 10 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland yet she only managed top 30 here.
September 25, 200816 yr Well airplay and marketing seem to have much more of an effect than usual so maybe their is a problem with the singles chart. However there are plenty of good british bands around though! Saying that though a lot of my favourite new acts this year are actually American (the mainstream and the non-mainstream bands) Lets get X Factor contestants to sing british songs and get british songs on adverts then British music will be dominating!
September 26, 200816 yr Maybe the most popular UK acts haven't released so far this year. With Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Keane, Snow Patrol and Razorlight amongst many others releasing in the next couple of months, I think things will get better regarding big hits by UK acts.
September 26, 200816 yr It's not often that I'll say this, but we should have a law like they have in France, where radio stations have to play a certain amount (45%, I think) of homegrown music. Probably won't happen - after all, how many people in Britain are going to admit that France have done something quite intelligent?
September 26, 200816 yr Coldplay have done well of course, but surely they are in a different league to everyone else, they could release any sort of album and it would be a guaranteed No.1 Even if it is a pile of steaming dog cr*p. Bring back Reef!!. Edited September 26, 200816 yr by Marcus

Probably won't happen - after all, how many people in Britain are going to admit that France have done something quite intelligent? I think radio stations here, should not only be made to play 45% of homegrown music, but they should be made to be a lot fairer about playing ALL homegrown artists, not just the ones they want to play. We could find it would make a lot of difference to some artists.

Probably won't happen - after all, how many people in Britain are going to admit that France have done something quite intelligent? Radio 1 do this (or too a similar proportion anyway, and I think the other BBC stations do too). But tbh for something like that to happen, laws and stuff need to be passed, and i'm sure that this is the least of the goverment's worries at the moment...
September 26, 200816 yr It really shouldn't be the law for British music to be played on radio all the time= to be successful
