It changes how you pronounce it. This Chinese lady once told me how it works but I kinda forgot. I think the direction of the 'slant' indicates how you should say it. Like if it's a "é" the tone of your voice should go from low to high when you pronounce it (which is why it's "Bee-yon-say" rather than "Bee-yonse") and the "è" indicates that you should go from high to low. Then there's the "ê" which sort of means you go up then down again and the "ë" which means you hold the sound of it longer than a normal letter. :lol: That probably makes no sense at all but I know what I mean. :kink: I'm not a language teacher so I don't need to be able to explain it to others.

I was thinking of the German word "schön" and I was taught to hold the sound of the o for longer than you usually would to protect it correctly. I've always been interested in what the different 'accents' on letters mean but I've never really looked into it apart from this random lesson I had with a Chinese lady. :lol:
