X Factor queen chases Christmas No.1

Source: uk.news.yahoo.com

X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke already has the Christmas number 1 "in the bag" according to one of Britain's biggest music retailers.

The 20-year-old singer, who won a £1 million recording contract after wowing millions of viewers during Saturday night's final, has released her debut single Hallelujah for download.

HMV confirmed the single was its fastest-ever selling download and is predicting this year's Christmas number 1 is now a certainty.

Gennaro Castaldo from HMV said: "Hallelujah promises to be the biggest X Factor release yet, and the chances are that Alexandra will have the Christmas No.1 single in the bag even before her CD single officially hits the stores in midweek."

"Alexandra's biggest challenge for the festive top spot is likely to come from Peter Kay's alter-ego Geraldine McQueen, but the reality is that while he may sell in the tens of thousands, Alexandra will sell in the hundreds of thousands - it's really all about the race for the No.2 spot now."

Bookmakers William Hill and Ladbrokes agree, and have both made her clear favourite to top the chart this Christmas with her cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Burke's chances were rated as 1/8 by Ladbrokes, and 1/5 by Hill.

Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg said: "It's as close to a certainty as you're likely to find."

And one politically powerful fan who will no doubt be adding to her single sales is none other than London Mayor Boris Johnson who said he will be writing to congratulate her on winning.

Johnson said: "It is wonderful to see a Londoner, and a fellow north Londoner at that, winning the X-Factor. I wish her the very best with her singing career and trust it will be the success she wishes and hopes for."

However, the ecstatic winner has had little time to reflect on her achievements or what may be to come. With just an hour's sleep and a packed schedule, Burke spent Sunday driving between magazine photo-shoots and filming the Christmas Top of the Pops special.

Well they don't say!

It's also Monday tomorrow I can exclusively reveal!

Unfortunately, it looks like X factor will grab xmas no1 yet again. While I like Alexandra, I dont like the song choice chosen again. Its a very poor song and will no doubt be the biggest selling single of the year.

This means we're likely to have an X-Factor top 2 of the year :( which is a shame because until November the YTDs looked great without reality tv/charity singles clogging everything up.

I don't get all this X Factor bashing :manson:

The likes of Leona Lewis, Ruth Lorenzo and Alexandra Burke are fukkin good singers, if it takes a reality tv show to get them noticed so be it

Is geraldine really gonna get top 3 :o its an extremely tough week and i see him getting top 20 :P

Might have to redo my chart games :o

I agree that the X-Factor has found some excellent talent, imo this year has really had a excellent top 12 (minus Dan and Eggnog) but I just wish they would stop getting the Christmas number 1 and always with a cover version!

Yeah agree with that

There just seems to be a lot of anti X Factor snobbery on this board as if the artists on there are somehow inferior beings musically when that is simply not the case, yeah last year was a joke with Leon but 2008 was a vintage year, apart from Girlband, Dan, Eggnog and some other girl group I could see myself buying a cd of any of the other 8 acts

Ditto. I hate music snobs lol. :P

This year was the best in terms of overall talent. :)

I agree they have recruited some good songs, but why release c**p songs for them? Alexandra has a brilliant voice but that hallelujah song is utter tripe. It was the same with Leona's first single (kelly clarkson cover), Will Young, Gareth Gates, Steve Brookstein & Leon Jackson. No wonder X factor has a bad reputation when they release c**p cover versions as debut singles. They should wait and release a decent proper single instead of trying to nab the no1 xmas single every year

Agree in general there but I think with regards to hallelujah Cowell put all the X Factor eggs in the Diana Vickers basket and chose that song on the assumption that Diana was going to win, it was only later that it was obvious that she was a busted flush so Cowell sided with Alexandra but the song that was meant for Diana was already committed to, Diana sung that song in the qualifying stages
