Best Lead-off Single of 2008

 

The following songs have been nominated for BLS of 2008:

• Alphabeat - Fascination [This Is Alphabeat]

   

  Obviously the most definitive song for Alphabeat, and one of the best from them, although Boyfriend could've done equally as well.

   

• Goldfrapp - A&E [seventh Tree]

   

  Nothing else could've launched this album as well as A&E did. Not even Clowns.

   

• Janet Jackson - Feedback [Discipline]

   

  There wasn't much choice really, was there?

   

• Kings of Leon - Sex On Fire [Only By The Night]

   

  There is a lot of quality on this album, but Sex On Fire really has helped to redefine the Kings of Leon as one of the biggest rock bands of the year.

   

• Sam Sparro - Black and Gold [sam Sparro]

   

  Modern classic compared with album of filler and adequate songs. Think they made the right choice there...

   

• Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes [santogold]

   

  A fantastic album but L.E.S. Artistes was easily the best choice - catchy, lyrically clever, new new punk-wave anthem.

The following songs have been nominated for BFUS of 2008:

• Katy Perry - Hot N Cold

   

  I Kissed A Girl was a massive number one smash, and Hot N Cold was undoubtedly the next best track on the album to go with. [Peaked at 6]

   

• Ladyhawke - Dusk Till Dawn

   

  Paris Is Burning was a little, tbh, underwhelming, but this addictive electropop track really put Ladyhawke on my radar :heart: [PIB: peaked at 22; DTD: peaked at 3]

   

• Portishead - The Rip

   

  A fantastically dark journey after the very chilling Machine Guns, this one stands out as one of the best tracks of the year. [MG: peaked at 9; Rip: peaked at 2]

   

• The Saturdays - Up

   

  It was a frankly idiotic move to release ITIL as lead single ahead of this tbh. [iTIL: peaked at 19; Up: peaked at 2]

   

• Solange - Sandcastle Disco

   

  The song that should've by all rights turned Solange into a household name as big as her sister's. [i Decided: peaked at 6; SD: peaked at 7 to date]
