Burke: 'I don't want to sing covers'

Sunday, December 21 2008, 05:52 EST

By Daniel Kilkelly, Entertainment Reporter

X Factor winner Alexandra Burke has confirmed that she wants to follow in the footsteps of Leona Lewis by working with top producers in the US.

The 20-year-old singer revealed that she is hoping to spend time creating a quality debut album next year rather than rush-releasing a collection of covers.

Simon Cowell is currently on his Christmas holiday in Barbados but will discuss his plans for Burke in a telephone call with the star within the next few days.

"Simon flew to Barbados the day after X Factor - very nice! So we have not spoken since," Burke told the Sunday Mirror. "But I'm supposed to call him and talk things over.

"I don't just want to sing a load of covers. I would like to do what Leona Lewis did and go over to Los Angeles and work with producers. I've got to persuade Simon that's the best idea."

Burke also confirmed reports that mentor Cheryl Cole has encouraged her to stay away from men while she builds up her career.

She said: "Cheryl has been telling me to stay away from boys. She said, 'Take this chance with both hands while you've got it. Don't have one hand being led astray.'"

This is good to know but let's be serious she was never going to sing covers even if she actually wanted to
Good. It really annoys me when people from these talent shows release an album of covers. Good for Alexandra.

Well she's ALWAYS going to be compared to Leona for the time being. There'll be no escaping it.

It would be better if she didn't do any covers, but ofc she will. And it looks like her album will be out in March, so God knows what Cowell will put on her album.

f*** off alex, im sick off you already. jesus, that girl has got D-I-V-A written all over her. shes been given a great chance here, she should get off her high horse before someone knocks her off. work on your album and put a sock in ya mouth
Im pretty sure it was announced the album would be relesead in the Autumn like Leon & Leona though.

Calm down, she only said I dont wanna sing covers.

She has great potential, much more than Steve, Shayne and Leon imo. I hope Simon looks after her as much as he's looked after Leona and turns her into a little British Beyonce which would be immense.
So many people have said that her mum Melissa Bell was lead singer of Soul II Soul, I thought it was Caron Wheeler who was lead singer of that group along with Jazzy B

Oh please

What a completely stupid and ignorant post.

Everything she said is correct, and it shows just how useless Cowell is by just buggering off the next day most probably to American Idol new series.

This is the exact problem every year, a new 'worldclass singer' is supposed to be found but then Cowell just basically leaves them with a load

of covers rubbish etc.

Only Leona has had SOME effort made with her but the majority of Spirit is poor quality album fillers though as Leona is his puppet she'd

happily sing ABC on loop for 3 minutes.

Alexandra has more of a personality so yes she should get to work with decent producers as it is HER album afterall and Cowell has more than enough money.

Surely shipping her off to Sweden to work with topnotch producers like Stargate and off to the US to with the likes of Ryan Tedder, JR Rotem etc

would be a great idea.

Its pointless every year havng a karaoke album released.

If these singers were SO talented they wouldn't have songs handpicked from a collection of demo's given to Simon.

Instead they'd be able to pick things themselves and perhaps write their own material.

I don't understand the snobbery about singers not writing their own stuff personally, it's not as if you enjoy it anymore or any less if they had no say in it. I DO believe that their wishes should be respected though, and I hope Simon lets Alex have her say and hasn't had a set-in-stone concept for her album since August.

It's certainly preferable though if the artist writes their own material, surely.... I mean, sorry, but if you want to be a recording artist as badly as that lot on X-Factor claim to be, then surely they should have been writing lyrics, songs, etc at some point, even if it's just scribbling stuff down in a personal journal or diary... I mean, if music really IS such an overwhelming, consuming passion of theirs, which surely is the reason for being an artiste in the first place.....

Maybe some people just don't have the knack for writing good songs though, but can sing - Alexandra could be one of those people!

What's wrong with not wanting to sing covers ? And with not wanting to be a Leona clone ?

You know you've made it when Harry Hill does you!

Well I usually like it when an artist at least has SOME contribution to their material. Kylie Minogue is a great example of someone who's not good at writing (though she's co-wrote a few of her songs) but SHE decides who writes and produces her songs. You need to feel really passionate about your material if you want to be able to perform it really well. If you're a manufactured puppet like all the X Factor winners are then chances are you may not like what you're given and I bet that's not what anyone would want to do!

That's my opinion on things anyway.
