The A-Chart 2008

I know everyone and their pet cat has done one of these now, but I didn't want to be left out. So, yeah, I'll be counting down my top 100 singles and top 20 albums of 2008 based on the Multichart system for the singles and instinct on the albums.

Six songs would have been on this list, but I took them out because they peaked for me in 2007. Those songs are:

First up is the second single from Sam Sparro which undeservedly flopped in the charts, it spent two weeks at #7 in my chart but it got boring fairly quickly and it hasn't got much better again, looking back. Next is a duet from James Morrison and Nelly Furtado which makes this countdown after 5 weeks, it could possibly make next years chart too as it could be yet to peak (spoilerz?!!) it;s just a beautiful song. At 98 is the song that reached the joint lowest peak and managed to make this list, 'Green Light' didn't manage to get a decent peak in my chart as I would perhaps cite it as my favourite song to feature no female vocals this year, it makes me feel like dancing - which you wouldn't perhaps expect from John Legend. Should have been a top 5 for me, oh well. Finishing a small sequence of male artists is the chav anthem from Nelly and Fergie which really reminds me of last summer, it's also the highest song to peak at 15. Woo? Gabriella Cilmi up next with her first of two appearances, another song that probably suffered from being a flop in the real chart as it achieved a fairly rare drop from the top 30. It's not as old to me as 'Sweet About Me' is now, but that's how the points system works. DO NOT QUESTION IT. :angry:

At #95 is the first of two Santogold songs in my 100. I'm just gonna say it now, she hasn't done too well in my singles chart. I wasn't really into the first single at the time and this suffered flop-syndrome like a lot of songs in this batch. 'Lights Out' is pretty amazing really and the most commercial track on her debut so it's a mystery why this missed the top 100 in the UK. :( Maria Lawson is up next with her 'comeback' single. At first it seemed great but it really isn't the sort of song an X Factor loser should come back with 2 years later after a flop album. I hope her album isn't shelved, I still want to hear it. Hoosiers next, this was good at the time but I've kinda gone off them now. At 92 is 'Body On Me', the Ashanti version. Click it, her one is much better. The one we got was mostly Nelly and Ashanti was almost invisible on the track, but she shines on this one with her two verses and less Nelly. I love this a lot more than it's position suggests, it stayed in my chart for quite a while but didn't spend long in the upper regions so it doesn't rack up many points. Finally we get to 'Wow' at 91 which surprises me because it's her only song on my countdown and it's really quite low, she had three top 10s in my chart this year as well. 'Wow' is a bit of a guilty pleasure that you can't help singing along to. I prefer 'In My Arms' now but it's just outside my top 100 at #104. Shame. etc.

Least Favourite: Mother

I wasn't really anticipating this album as this is the first Ashanti album I've ever listened to. I listened to it after Mikal recommended "You're Gonna Miss" to me one day and it became one of my favourite album tracks of the year. (though it didn't enter my chart so it's not on the list) I didn't find anything quite as good on the album but I love the two other mentioned tracks as well. This is a typical female R&B album which I'm a sucker for. I don't particularly dislike "Mother" but it's a bit of a soppy dedication to her mother. (plus it's over 5 minutes long which is always a turn off for me) It's fairly 'nice' overall with four really strong songs and eight songs that are just good.

Yeah, I've got their album which I was really into about the time this was released but I've gone off it now. 'Broken Strings' should be higher on this really but it was released at the wrong time, if it climbs in my chart it will probably be hee at the same position next year. :lol: I probably am, I think about 3 or 4 people must have charted it on here. :(

But listen to the one I posted, the one from Ashanti's album is better. (less Nelly, more Ashanti, therefore it's better) Listen to that Santogold song, if you don't like her other songs you still might like this. I tihnk they're my two favourite, now in this countdown.

Starting off my next batch is Duffy with her first of three singles on my countdown, it didn't stick around for as long as the other two (obviously) which is kinda good for it because I'm not bored of it yet, I can't say the same about the other two. I didn't think much of this as a single choice, I prefer "Delayed Devotion" and "Hanging On Too Long", but it was by no means a bad song. Next up is "When You Touch Me" by the Freemasons, which is actually in a tie with #88 but as the other has yet to leave my chart I've put it higher. I don't usually like this sort of dance music that much but there's something about this song that makes it brilliant. Maybe it's the naff, but catchy chorus. Now for the longest song in my chart, exceeding the 5:30 mark is usually a definite no-no for me but I actually really like this. Does that make me a chav? :( Rapper + Rihanna + Eurotrash sample = Chav anthem. It shouldn't be good but it just is. Another tie now, this time the Wombats win because they got a higher peak. My rules. :angry: Katy Perry is at #87 with the grossly over rated "I Kissed A Girl". I want to hate it because it's so attention seeking but it's a catchy tune that reached my top 10 despite me thinking nothing of it when it was sent to the BJSC back in June. At #86 is the highest peaking Wombats single in my chart, though they have their last entry to this countdown higher up in this batch. I think this is actually their best single apart from "Let's Dance To Joy Division", even if most of the lyrics are "This is no Bridget Jones". :lol: The song mentions Eastenders too, which is kinda...unique.

Beyoncé at #85 makes her my lowest #1 but it's also my most recent and was still top 5 in my last chart. I didn't get into this song properly for quite some time, which is why she has her other song released at the same time yet to come despite a lower peak. A combination of the video and being catchy as hell allowed this song to spend one week at #1 in December. ~~I wish I could do the dance :(~~ The last song from the Wombats is at #84 now, it's their longest running song on my chart and it would have been slightly longer if I didn't get bored of it towards the end. (songs rarely fall out from the top 30) They've done well to get 3 top 10 singles in my chart this year considering they aren't the usual sort of music I listen to. Adele makes her first of four appearance with, by far, her least successful song in my chart. I don't think it's significantly worse than her others, she just got kinda lost in the brief rush of my chart late November/early December time before it got stagnant again. I think this is a beautiful cover version, her voice is so enticing at times. At #82 is Mariah who wins the tie with Adele for still being on the chart. I was extremely disappointed in this being a single and it was the first of hers not to reach #1 in my chart but now I've heard a brillaint remix of it (which I've used in the link) that totally transofrms the song for me, which is why it's been yo-yoing recently and it could yet reach new heights as I love it so much. :wub: Rounding off this batch is the vastly under rated "Run The Show", this started growng me the week after it reached #41 in the official chart so I was well behind everyone else with my love for it which might explain the fairly large drops for. (yes, I consider 5+ place drops large -_-)

Well this is probably my most random 'find' of the year. I first found Ladyhawke when I was looking for new entries to my chart during a dry season and her name sounding most appealing to me. (hey - it has "lady" in it, it must be a woman, I must like it) I found "Paris Is Burning" which was a nice track and it reached my top 20. After listening to the album it is now my least favourite song on there, I don't know if that's because I've played it too much however. It's a seriously strong album I think, "Dusk Til Dawn" being the clear stand out to me, I have no idea how it missed the top 75. I really recommend this, I think it's on 2 for £10 at HMV, check it out.
